Blue-green algae release chemical suspected in some amphibian deformities

Retinoic acid levels high in waterways rich in cyanobacteria blooms

    Web edition : 5:41 pm

Harmless as they may look, some of the microbes called cyanobacteria have the power to dose waterways with a range of chemicals that might cause deformities in frogs or other vertebrate wildlife.

Cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, could be an underappreciated but widespread source of compounds called retinoic acids in waterways, says environmental toxicologist Jianying Hu of Peking University. Out of 24 kinds of cyanobacteria grown in a lab, 13 produced some kind of retinoic acid or retinoic acid cousin, Hu and her colleagues report online May 29 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Retinoic acids, formed from vitamin A, help sculpt developing body parts in vertebrates. Researchers puzzling over clusters of deformed frogs first highlighted in the 1990s have considered retinoic acids as one of several possible villains.

Hu and colleagues also analyzed samples from China?s third largest freshwater lake, Taihu Lake, which is rich in cyanobacteria blooms. The lake carries high concentrations of retinoic acids, the researchers found.

The new work ?opens up a new area of potential research,? says plankton ecologist Karl Havens, who directs the Florida Sea Grant College Program in Gainesville. ?I will be interested now to see if the compounds are found in other lakes with cyanobacteria blooms, or even if they continue to be documented in this lake,? he says.

The retinoic acid concentration found in Taihu Lake ? up to 20 nanograms per liter ? was 10,000 times what Kunimitsu Kaya of the University of Tsukuba in Japan and his colleagues have found in Japanese lakes. Last year Kaya reported cyanobacteria making a retinoic acid cousin (7-hydroxy retinoic acid); he says he finds it plausible that blooms create such extreme conditions in Taihu. Scum there probably blocks sunlight that otherwise would break down some of the very potent retinoic acids.

There?s not enough information yet to link cyanobacteria to high rates of amphibian deformities, says ecologist Andrew Blaustein of Oregon State University in Corvallis. He and other researchers have proposed a variety of other possible contributing menaces, including UV radiation and trematode parasites.

Parasites, a leading hypothesis for the cause of some limb abnormalities, certainly don?t explain all the cases, says disease ecologist Pieter Johnson of the University of Colorado Boulder. The new paper ?may be a useful step forward in helping to explain abnormalities in wetlands without the parasite.

Demi Lovato Opens Up About Bipolar Disorder

'I felt relieved when I found out,' 'X Factor' judge tells Cosmopolitan in July issue.
    By John Mitchell

Demi Lovato is opening up about her bipolar disorder in the July issue of Cosmopolitan, telling the magazine that being diagnosed was a relief because it meant she could treat the problem.

"I felt relieved when I found out. Like I'm not completely crazy; there's a medical reason for all of it," Lovato says in the July issue. "It's a daily thing; you don't get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own."

The new "X Factor" judge revealed earlier this year in her MTV documentary that her issues manifested themselves in self-harm, including an eating disorder and self-medicating that resulted in a stay at the Timberline Knolls treatment facility in Illinois.

"I had so many issues that were underneath, that needed to be taken care of, and we kept putting Band-Aids over it. It literally drove me insane. I was not eating, and purging, and self-harming. It was really difficult to be able to stop," Lovato recalled to MTV. "This is a daily battle that I will face for the rest of my life. Everyone kind of made me a role model, and I hated that. I was partying, I was self-medicating. I was always stressing out. I felt like I was living a lie. I felt guilt and shame. I decided to take it out on myself. I harmed myself. It was my way of taking my own shame and my own guilt out on myself, and I was just depressed."

Having gotten the help she needed and with her new high-profile gig on "The X Factor" opposite Britney Spears, the pop star is back on the right path now, and she tells Cosmopolitan that she sees herself with a family in the not-too-distant future. "I want to be married with kids in 10 years," Lovato revealed.

The 19-year-old singer/actress' past struggles have given her a new perspective on dating as well, teaching her that she should not rush to judgment when it comes to guys — with the exception of one characteristic that she simply will not abide.

"I don't have many deal breakers. I've done so much in my life, it doesn't feel right to judge other people," Lovato tells the mag. "Oh, I know one quality I won't tolerate. I would never be with a guy who is controlling."

To Pakistan, Shakil Afridi is a traitor who helped a foreign power locate and kill an enemy on its territory. To the US, Dr. Afridi is a hero who will now, apparently, spend the next 33 years of his life in prison.

The US lobbied hard with the Pakistani government to gain Afridi?s release. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, during a February 2012 visit to Islamabad, urged Pakistani authorities to release Afridi, but Pakistan declined. Given the substantial public anger in Pakistan over the bin Laden killing ? more about the US?s violation of Pakistani sovereignty than for sympathy for the man ? Pakistan sealed Afridi?s fate.

Now his sentencing marks another low-water mark for the US-Pakistani relationship, and highlights how little common ground the two countries share. But expectations for each side are now so low that it?s unlikely the US is going to adopt another full-court press as seen when another US spy ? Raymond Davis ? faced detention in Pakistan.

Think you know Asia? Take our quiz?

To be sure, Afridi?s Pakistani nationality also means the US isn?t going to view his detention in quite the same leave-no-man-behind terms. And the US does not have the same legal arguments of the Geneva Conventions as it did in the case of Mr. Davis.

But there?s also much less riding on the US-Pakistan relationship than even a year ago when the Davis affair erupted. NATO has managed to keep the Afghan war effort going, despite Pakistan cutting off supply lines through its territory. Then, too, trust has evaporated since the discovery of bin Laden in Pakistan and the unauthorized US raid to kill him.

    Roller coaster ride

America has had a roller coaster relationship with Pakistan for years. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the US and Pakistan were as thick as thieves, funding, arming, and training Afghan and Pakistani fighters to take on the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. After the Soviets withdrew, and after Pakistan successfully tested a nuclear device, the US imposed strict military sanctions against Pakistan, and left that country with tens of thousands of former militants, thousands of politically charged Islamic seminaries, and a Pakistani economy addicted to foreign aid.

Today, the US and Pakistan have spent a decade ostensibly fighting on the same side against Islamist extremist groups ? some of whom use Pakistan?s less-well-controlled corners, such as Swat and Northern Waziristan, as their bases ? and yet it is not clear how much these two countries share in common anymore.

Intel details 14 dual-core Ivy Bridge processors ahead of Computex

Intel announced its quad-core Ivy Bridge processors in April, but we've known that dual-core CPUs must be on the way too. And alas, the chip maker does have some up its sleeve -- 14, to be exact. Core i5 and Core i7 versions will be the first to ship, with Core i3 processors launching later this year along with new Pentiums and Celerons. Of the 14 dual-core processors, six are desktop-grade. The rest are mobile, though four are ultra-low voltage (which will be denoted by a U at the end of their name). Computex is just around the corner, and we expect to see plenty of Ivy Bridge systems -- especially Ultrabooks with ultra-low voltage CPUs -- there next week. In the meantime, we've already reviewed the Lenovo ThinkPad x230, a system running a dual-core 2.6GHz Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor. If you're into the nitty-gritty details, you'll find plenty to love in the Intel slides below the break.

A Quick Guide To Condo Buying | FINANCE-DEBT RELIEF

Condominiums have increased in demand over the final two decades. The small upkeep that is required is very attractive to quite a few buyers. The limited upkeep and lower price tag entice property owners. Quite a few condo complexes provide entertainment and social activities as well as exercise facilities. Think of your needs and lifestyle just before you buy a condo.

Instead of becoming a mode of building, a condo is much more of a sort of ownership. Low-rise buildings, townhomes, and houses may also be condo properties. You will find two components to condominiums, the apartment itself and the common zones. A home owner will buy a particular unit that will be documented in his or her name. The common sections such as recreational facilities, elevators, hallways, etc are properties of all apartment owners. You?ll find however a handful of common components which are limited to certain unit owners. Forms of common elements enjoyed by an exclusive owner consist of lockers, vehicle parking spaces as well as balconies. There could be limitations connected with a number of the exclusive common components so be sure to enquire about them.

Find out about the rules, bylaws and polices in place in the condo building that interests you and remember that polices for condos may vary from nearby metropolitan areas. These may either be laid back or very strict based on the condo corporation. Modifications to the appearance of the unit, car parking, noise and pets are all items which might be restricted. There are resale condo properties, conversions and new constructions offered to you. Numerous potential buyers are enticed by new developments as they supply better possibilities with regards to unit locale, finishing options, new home warranty protection, and so on. You should realize nevertheless that modifications may take place in the course of the development period and so the your condo might not look precisely as it did on the plan.

The main distinction with a condominium conversion and a new build is the fact that the outside of the building is already set up. Quite a few of the benefits of conversions are the same as for new condominiums. The provincial system of home warranty protection might or may not pertain to a condo conversion and needs to be confirmed.

A resale condominium will appeal to those who prefer to view the units and the amenities before they make one final selection. Judges to pass sentence on Charles Taylor

(AP) ? Judges are passing sentence on former Liberian President Charles Taylor for supporting rebels in Sierra Leone who murdered and mutilated thousands during their country's brutal civil war.

Taylor was convicted last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a bloody rampage during the decade-long war that ended in 2002.

The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president is the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II.

Prosecutors have asked judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone to impose an 80-year sentence when they mete out his punishment Wednesday morning. Taylor's lawyers urged judges to hand down a sentence that offered him some hope of release before he dies.

Taylor will serve his sentence in a British prison.

ADATA's trio of new Premier Pro microSD cards have escaped from the company's headquarters. Aimed at professionals and demanding consumers, the 16GB and 32GB editions come with a 45MB/s read and 40MB/s write speeds and support the latest SD 3.0 standard. The company isn't mentioning how well the 8GB card runs, so we'll just presume it's a little less speedy than either of its larger brothers. We've reached out to the company to find out when we can expect to see these hitting shelves (and how much they'll cost) and we will update if they tell us.

The Tools in the Box - The Chronicle of Higher Education

We?re still slamming around in the gale unleashed by my lighthearted survey of last week. But since results are still trickling in, I will not yet attempt any synthesis of results or responses to the very nature of the game. Instead, please consider this an extended footnote from my peculiar domain of academe, which is the doing and teaching of fiction writing.

I fully expect comments that question what the academy is doing messing around in the realm of creative writing in the first place, but I hope the discussion doesn?t get pulled in that direction. Here I?d like to stick to word choice, syntax choice, grammar choice.

In Sunday?s Modern Love column in The New York Times, I ran across the sentence ?He didn?t even know I hadn?t smoked or drank in 10 years.? I read it aloud over breakfast, and it didn?t jar my partner. But it jarred me. Strictly speaking, the reason to take umbrage at the column is the opinion that ?I had drank? is incorrect. The verb conjugates as ?I drink; I drank; I have drunk.? Of course the word ?drunk? might imply drunkenness, and it may well be that the author or editor changed ?I hadn?t smoked or drunk in 10 years? because she guessed that readers would conjure an image of the author as a slovenly drunkard. If that guess is accurate, then the sentence may be better in its current form, an alternative to traditional conjugation.

But what remains jarring to me about that form is that a narrator who says, ?I had drank that wine? or ?I drunk it right down? gives himself away (or so we fiction writers presume) as belonging to one of several social types and not to others. Other markers?use of ?y?all? or ?ain?t,? or ?that hossie better get along? would help indicate whether the same narrator is from the deep South or the deep North, or a cowboy, or a dude rancher, or a preppie making fun of other social types, or Lord knows what else. The choices are myriad; ?drank? is the tip of the iceberg.

But that iceberg is the stuff of the fiction profession, and those of us who teach in that profession try mightily to instruct our students in the deft use of their linguistic tools. For a while, this effort for me included laying out the traditional conjugation of transitive ?lay? versus intransitive ?lie.? If you inadvertently have a persnickety grammarian-type character saying, ?I need to lay down,? this argument went, you are giving the reader mixed signals, whether or not the reader is aware of how the verbs are parsed. By contrast, if you want to demonstrate the scanty education of your perfidious murderer, you might have him write his confession with a solecism like ?He just lied [or layed] there.? However, in a number of recent novels, I?ve noticed that otherwise exemplary fictional speakers of standard English are using ?lay? intransitively. If this usage shift becomes universal, we fiction writers will have lost a tool from our toolbox, and there will no further point in teaching students how to deploy it. That, more than right/wrong or descriptive/prescriptive dichotomies, is our main concern.

In my latest novel, I have a meth addict who is getting fired say of work that day, ?I shouldn?t of come in?; and of a love interest, ?If I could of had her, I would of.? My copy editor changed these locutions to ?could have? and ?could?ve.? I read the various versions aloud; I tried to tell myself there was no auditory difference between ?shouldn?t of? and ?shouldn?t?ve?; I tried to rationalize that even though this particular meth addict might write ?could of,? he is not writing but speaking in the scene. In the end, I restored ?of,? hoping that my readers would hear my character better that way and would not assign the solecism to the author.

Artists need to know their paints, their brushes, their canvases; composers need to know keys, scales, harmony, meter. Fiction writers and poets need to know language, in as many registers as possible, to create worlds made entirely of words.

P.S. Wed. morning ? I have updated the penultimate paragraph to clarify what was confusing to some readers.

Shakil Afridi, Pakistan Doctor In Bin Laden Hunt, Found Guilty Of Militancy, Not CIA Links

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- A Pakistan doctor who assisted the CIA in tracking down Osama bin Laden was sentenced to 33 years in prison for conspiring with an Islamist militant commander, a verdict that will make it more difficult for Washington to argue for his release.

The judgment against Shakil Afridi debunked the widely held assumption that he had been convicted for his involvement with the American spy agency.

The decision referred to unspecified evidence that Afridi had "acted" with foreign intelligence agencies, but went on to say any charges related to that couldn't be considered because the court didn't have jurisdiction. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the five-page document, first reported by Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Afridi's family and lawyers said he was innocent and would appeal. They said they had not yet seen the court verdict and refused to comment on his relations with the CIA. The trial was carried out in a court in the country's tribal regions close to Afghanistan. A political official, in consultation with tribal elders, ruled on the case in secret.

The United States has called for Pakistan to release Afridi, and his punishment has become another flashpoint issue in the fractured relations between the two countries. Pakistan's army was outraged by the unilateral U.S. raid that killed bin Laden in May 2011 because it was a violation of the country's sovereignty and added to perceptions it was a sponsor of terror.

Afridi ran a vaccination campaign on behalf of the CIA to collect blood samples from bin Laden's family at a compound in Abbottabad where U.S. commandos killed the al-Qaida leader. It was unclear whether he succeeded, but U.S. officials have publicly said he helped the effort to track bin Laden.

The fact Afridi was technically convicted for militancy, not helping the CIA, could complicate Washington's efforts to press for his release. Pakistan could argue that his trial was an internal matter that has nothing to do with the United States.

The verdict said Afridi was guilty of conspiring with a militant group led by commander Mangal Bagh. It said he gave money to the group and treated its leaders at a hospital in Khyber when he was stationed there. According to unnamed witnesses, he did this because of his "deep affiliation with the group." Others, also unnamed, said the group planned terrorist attacks in Afridi's office.

The verdict, which was passed down last week, found Afridi guilty of "conspiring against the state" and other charges.

Pakistani officials didn't attempt to correct widespread reports that the charges referred to his work with the CIA. The verdict triggered anger in the United States and elsewhere, with many questioning how helping kill bin Laden ? a sworn enemy of Pakistan ? could be seen as working against the state.

The full text of the verdict means Pakistan can now, technically at least, deflect that criticism.

Afridi's motivation for working with the CIA or whether he was aware who was employing him has never been established. He was once the top medical officer in the Khyber region.

Speaking last week, a friend said he had once been kidnapped by Mangal Bagh's group and paid a heavy ransom for his release. The friend didn't give his name because he didn't want to attract attention to himself.

Tips to Save on Car Insurance

Tips to Save on Car InsuranceBuying auto insurance can seem torturous, however, the more information is held will be easier to filter out the best options. If you?re looking to save on car insurance here are some important recommendations on all contracts with GNP, Qualitas, the Eagle or Banorte Seguros Insurance.
Compare and quoted several auto insurers

It is important not to stick with the first listing in auto insurance that offer, because doing so can only compare boundaries and erroneously believe that the only way to save is by reducing protection. For this reason we recommend that you go with an insurance agency that offers different car insurance quotes. This will allow you not to stay in internal comparisons with only one insurer of cars, but you can compare rates, insurance policies and even exclusions of each car insurers that has an agreement with the auto insurance agent.

Ask for discounts on car insurance

It may seem obvious, but what better way to get discounts on auto insurance if it is not asking. Some people prefer not to shame, however, can reap enormous benefits. Remember that often car insurance omit this information, it does not suit the company or the executive by the commission amount is for sale.

Other discounts apply auto insurance companies:

? Multi Discount: You may qualify for a discount on self-insurance in case you secure with the same car insurance company and any property as the house or apartment where you live.

? Discount for groups: If you belong to an association or other professional or if your employer offers group insurance, just as you could qualify for a group discount.

? High deductible: check either the deductible amount payable in case of collision or theft, as well as the total amount it will cost the insurance policy depending on the deductible percentage to be offered, but always remember the following formula used auto insurers: High deductible = lower premiums, Low = higher premiums deductible on auto insurance.

? Discount for being ?good student? if you have a student in your insurance policy, many insurance companies give discounts if you car is that it has completed a driving course certified by the auto insurance company, or has good qualifications.

California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awards $5.5 million grant for project

LOS ANGELES (May 30, 2012) Patricia Dickson, M.D., principal investigator at The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), is co-principal investigator of a project that was just awarded a $5.5 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). The goal of the project is to develop a stem cell based therapy for the treatment of mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a fatal pediatric lysosomal storage disease that causes neurodegeneration as well as defects in other major organ systems. Dr. Dickson is working with lead investigator Philip H. Schwartz, Ph.D., senior scientist at the CHOC Children's Research Institute and managing director of the facility's National Human Neural Stem Cell Resource.

For nearly a decade, Dr. Dickson's research at LA BioMed has focused on enzyme replacement therapy for mucopolysaccharidosis, a group of metabolic disorders caused by the absence or malfunctioning of enzymes needed to break down molecules - called glycosaminoglycans - which help build bone, cartilage, connective tissue and other essential parts of the body. As part of this study, she and her colleagues will begin with proof-of-principle experiments for MPS I.

"Dr. Dickson has been at the forefront of mucopolysaccharidosis research for many years, working tirelessly to help develop therapies for MPS I," said David I. Meyer, Ph.D., president and CEO of LA BioMed. "We congratulate her on her continued success, and for her role in this project which could be an important breakthrough for children suffering from neurodegenerative disorders."

"The unique aspect of this research is that it uses a single donor for the transplantation of stem cells into the body and the brain, which allows the best treatment for both physical and neurological disease and avoids rejection of neural stem cell grafts by the host immune system," said Dr. Dickson. "Pediatric neurodegenerative diseases are generally neglected in stem cell research, but stand the greatest chance of success. The high probability of success, along with the need to alleviate suffering in children, is why we believe the first applications of stem cell therapies should be for these kids."

Dr. Schwartz, Dr. Dickson and project collaborators are working to address two critical issues in the development of a therapeutic candidate based on stem cells: that early intervention is not only required but is indeed possible in this patient population, and that the concept of immune tolerance is also required, where the immune system is trained to attack only real threats in the body but not the body's own cells or tissues.

To date, there is still a significant unmet medical need to better impact and prevent the neurodegenerative processes in this disease. If successful in MPS I, this technique can be expanded to help treat other neurodegenerative disorders due to lysosomal storage.

This undated photo released by the Keegan family shows Marina Keegan, left, and her brother Pierce, of Wayland, Mass. Marina, who graduated from Yale less than a week earlier, died at the scene of an automobile crash in Dennis, Mass., Saturday, May 26, 2012. Her writing had been published in The New York Times, and she had accepted a job at The New Yorker. Her final Yale Daily News column was widely shared on social media, where she had implored her classmates to "make something happen to this world." (AP Photo/Keegan Family)

(AP) ? "What we have to remember is that we can still do anything," Marina Keegan wrote to fellow Yale University graduates. "... We can't, we must not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it's all we have."

Three days after the Yale alumna's death in a car crash, her parents, Tracy and Kevin Keegan, said from their Massachusetts home that it was comforting that even strangers were drawing inspiration from their daughter's words as her last newspaper column spread across the Internet.

"I would love my daughter's words, few as they may be, to be shared," Tracy Keegan said. "... That's all that's left of her now, her words."

Yale Daily News Editor Max de La Bruyere said Tuesday that the newspaper put Keegan's print column online as a tribute following her death Saturday on Cape Cod. He said it had gotten 400,000 hits on the newspaper's website after first spreading through Yale students' Facebook and Twitter accounts. The newspaper tracked readers as far away as Asia.

"It's a huge outpouring of sympathy," he said. "People are very moved by it."

The 22-year-old's column talked about anxiety that came with the feeling of losing the web of fellowship at Yale. She said what she wanted out of life was "the opposite of loneliness," and encouraged classmates by saying "the best years of our lives are not behind us."

"It's not quite love and it's not quite community," the English major wrote of her time at Yale. "It's just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together."

The Keegans said their daughter's boyfriend, 22-year-old Michael Gocksch of Centerport, N.Y., fell asleep at the wheel while driving with her to their family's summer place in Wellfleet on Cape Cod.

The young couple had been to Brookline earlier in the day so their daughter could introduce her boyfriend and fellow 2012 graduate to her grandmother. The couple was heading to a birthday dinner for Keegan's father when she died. Gocksch was hospitalized in stable condition after the crash and later discharged.

Massachusetts State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred on Route 6 in the town of Dennis. They said speed wasn't a factor and both were wearing seatbelts. The vehicle drifted off the road and into guardrails on both sides of the road before flipping.

Keegan's parents said she was about to start a job as an assistant to the general counsel at The New Yorker, where she interned last summer and got some of her work onto a magazine blog.

The New York Times also published a piece she wrote after another column she did for the Yale Daily News sparked a debate about why 25 percent of Yale graduates go into finance or consulting instead of pursuing employment more closely connected to their studies and aspirations.

Keegan had been the president of Yale College Democrats. She worked in New Hampshire in the summer of 2008 as one of the youngest paid staffers for the Obama presidential campaign, her parents said Tuesday while looking at a photo of their daughter with the president.

The Keegans spent graduation weekend with their daughter in New Haven, time they said they were grateful for as they prepare for her memorial Saturday at The First Parish in Wayland. They plan to spread her ashes in Cape Cod Bay.

Yale professor and literary critic Harold Bloom said Keegan had become like an adopted granddaughter to him after serving as his research assistant for the past two years. He taught her seminars in Shakespeare and American poetry and called her senior essay about the poet John Keats' influence on author F. Scott Fitzgerald's work "quite publishable."

In August, a musical that Keegan wrote will be staged in New York City as part of The New York International Fringe Festival, fellow 2012 Yale graduate and project collaborator Mark Sonnenblick said.

Called "Independents," the play is about a group of 20-somethings smuggling drugs on a Revolutionary War-era ship while posing as war re-enactors. When the posse's leader disappears, the friends try to become real re-enactors.

Sonneblick, who wrote the show's lyrics, said the script is about transitioning to adulthood and maintaining community and relationships, themes that embodied much of Keegan's writing.

"These are things Marina didn't necessarily have answers for," Sonneblick said. "She took on issues she was concerned about and happened to her and her friends."

The Yale graduate said it like this in her last column: "We're in this together, 2012. Let's make something happen to this world."

HP, Sony and Toshiba have already outed their new offerings for the back-to-school season, and now Dell is stepping up to the plate with announcements of its own. First up is the XPS One 27 all-in-one. As the name would suggest, it has a 27-inch screen, and the resolution is an impressive 2560 x 1440 pixels. All configurations are going to ship with Ivy Bridge processors (Core i5 or i7) with up to 16GB of memory, and the standard 1TB 7,200RPM hard drive can be swapped out for a 2TB HDD or 32GB SSD. Meanwhile, Waves MaxxAudio 4, Infinity-branded speakers, a Blu-ray drive and optional 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT640M GPU memory (upgradeable from integrated Intel graphics) up this machine's multimedia cred. An optional internal TV tuner will also be offered. Wrapping things up, there are four USB 3.0 sockets, two USB 2.0 ports with power charge, audio out, HDMI, VGA, mic and headphone jacks and an 8-in-1 memory card reader. The XPS One 27 starts at $1,399, and while it's available in Asia starting today, it's not expected to hit the US for a few weeks.
