Pakistan's Texas-sized problems

Despite the some cultural overlaps, the American and Pakistani paths are parting ways.

Years ago, before Sept. 11, when I first started traveling in South Asia, a Pakistani diplomat gave me a quick tutorial about how his people, Pashtuns, were not so very different from my own people, Texans.

We both follow conservative religions, although not so closely as we like others to believe, said the diplomat, delicately cutting into a plate of enchiladas at a Tex-Mex joint in Washington. Like Texans, we love our guns. We have very traditional beliefs about marriage and the role of women in society. We love barbecued meat. We distrust government, and hate paying taxes. We?re not as different as you might think.

As intriguing as this Pashtuns-are-Texans theory is, it is clear that the differences between the United States (which includes Texas, for the time being) and Pakistan (which includes many ethnic Pashtuns, for the time being) have become vast. US military airstrikes, aimed at Islamist militants but also killing civilians and even Pakistani soldiers, have turned many Pakistanis against what they see as a ?great Satan.? Pakistani tolerance of, and even support for, Islamist militant groups on Pakistani soil has pushed many US military commanders to conclude that Pakistan is, in effect, more an enemy than an ally. According to Christine Fair in this week?s Foreign Policy magazine, some are contemplating a new approach: either containment, or benign neglect.

At present, Pakistan no longer allows the US military or the NATO alliance to use its ports or roads to resupply NATO troops based in Afghanistan. And with US elections approaching, and Pakistan?s government increasingly fragile, it is hard to see how the two countries can bridge the gap.

Pakistani public opinion has turned sharply against the United States, with a recent Pew Research poll showing that 74 percent regard America to be an enemy, up from 69 percent in 2011, and 64 percent three years ago.

Recent headlines indicate that things are not getting better, but rather worse.

* In her?Foreign Policy piece, Ms. Fair suggests that US military are close to giving up on its tactical alliance with Pakistan. As Fair writes, Pakistan is in such a state of crisis, it couldn?t change course even if it wanted to do so.

Pakistan is in crisis. Its courts act on whim rather than jurisprudence. Its political parties are vast pools of corrupt patronage networks that aggregate elite interests while disregarding the interests of Pakistan's struggling masses. Neither elected politicians nor military rulers have had the political courage to right the nation's fiscal woes by enforcing income tax or imposing industrial and agricultural taxes on the ruling elites and their networks of influence. While the army has retrenched from a direct role in politics, it has done so likely because it has no other option: Pakistan's military suffered a mighty humiliation after the bin Laden raid, which left many citizens wondering whether their country is a failed state, a rogue state, or both.

'Big Hero 6': Disney Animation At Work On New Marvel Movie

Big Hero 6 Disney

"Big Hero 6" heading to the big screen?

Marvel's "Big Hero 6" is heading to the big screen. According to EW, Disney Animation is at work on the animated film about a Japanese super team.

Created in 1998, "Big Hero 6" is a spin-off of sorts from "Alpha Flight." Assembled by the Japanese government, members have included Sunfire, a one-time member of the X-Men, Silver Samurai, a foe of Wolverine and Fred, a Godzilla-esque monster.

According to EW, "Big Hero 6" is in early development. Its On The Grid reports no writer is attached, but "Kung Fu Panda's" Kristina Reed will produce. Blue Sky Disney, a fan site, reports "Winnie the Pood" director Don Hall will direct.

"Big Hero 6" will likely join "Guardians of the Galaxy" as one of the non-"Avengers" flicks in development. Marvel is already at work on "Iron Man 3" with "Thor 2" and "Captain America 2" also heading for production.

Casio Slim XJ-A246

The Casio Slim XJ-A246 ($1,499.99 direct) is a formidable lightweight business projector, part of the company's Slim (aka Green Slim) line of projectors that uses Casio?s unique hybrid LED-laser light engine. This projector has a solid range of features including 2X zoom, automatic keystone correction, HDMI and Wi-Fi connectivity, and the ability to run presentations off a USB thumb drive. It produces vivid, bright images?though the colors are subject to occasional tinting.

The XJ-A246 is rated at 2,500 lumens, and the projector has WXGA (1,280 by 800) native resolution. Instead of producing red, green, and blue using a standard lamp and a color wheel, it produces red with LEDs, blue with lasers, and green by shining blue laser light on a phosphor. Its optical system directs the red, green, and blue light to the DLP chip, and out the front lens. Its LED lamp is designed to last up to 20,000 hours, far longer than typical projector bulbs?and it?s mercury free. The projector (including the bulb) is backed by a generous 3-year warranty.

Ports include VGA; a single AV-in jack (included an AV cord with a plug to fit the jack; at the other end are 3 RCA jacks for composite video); HDMI; RS-232C; and a USB type A port. You can run presentations computer free off a USB thumb drive plugged into the port, or you can attach a wireless LAN adapter; with it you can connect wirelessly with WiFi-enabled Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile smartphones and computers (PC or Mac) running MobiShow software, so you can run a presentation from these devices. Up to 32 computers can be connected at one time and users can also view content from up to four PCs on an individual screen simultaneously.

The XJ-A246 also includes auto brightness adjustment, which uses built-in light sensors to automatically adjust the brightness level of the projection to suit the lighting conditions in the surrounding environment.

In brightness, resolution, and features, the XJ-A246 is very similar to the Casio Signature XJ-M245 ($1,299.99 direct, 3 stars), except that the Signature is larger and weighs 8.6 pounds, making it more suitable for classrooms and conference rooms than for taking on the road.

I tested the projector with it placed about 10 feet away from our test screen. The XJ-A246 offers automatic keystone correction and a generous 2X zoom (controlled through the remote), allowing for versatility in the projector's placement. The focus is also adjusted incrementally through the remote, and with a little practice I was able to achieve a reasonably sharp focus.

?Data and Video Image Quality

In my testing using the DisplayMate suite of tests, the XJ-A246 showed decent image quality. There was occasional tinting, with some light grays looking slightly greenish and darker grays with a hint of red. Colors were somewhat better in Graphics than in Standard mode, though there was still modest tinting. White-on-black type was fuzzy at the smallest two sizes, and showed some tinting as well. Image quality is fine for typical business presentations, at least ones in which color fidelity isn't critical.

The video was of a quality suitable for use with shorter clips as part of a presentation. Colors were bright and well saturated, sometimes to the point of punchiness. There was some loss of detail in brighter areas. The rainbow effect?the appearance of little red-green-blue flashes, particularly in scenes with high contrast between dark and light areas?was frequently visible. Most DLP projectors show at least a trace of the effect, but with the XJ-A246 it was more obvious than usual, and would likely be very distracting to people who are sensitive to it.

Other Issues

Audio, from the projector?s 1-watt built-in speaker, was of decent volume and reasonably clear, sufficient to fill a small conference room.

The Casio Slim XJ-A246 has a good feature set for a portable projector: a weight of 5 pounds and a thin form factor; a range of connectivity choices including HDMI and WiFi (with an included adapter). It sports Casio's unique hybrid LED/laser DLP light engine; its LED light source is designed to last 20,000 hours, and should never need to be replaced. Its data image quality is good for typical business presentations, but tinting was enough of an issue that I?d hesitate to use it for material where accurate color is paramount.

The Editors? Choice Epson PowerLite 1775W Multimedia Projector has a mere 4,000-hour claimed lamp life, while many projectors offer even less. But the 1775W otherwise shines, so to speak?it weighs just 3.8 pounds: it also provides Wi-Fi connectivity; HDMI, and a port for a USB thumb drive. Its image quality for both data and video proved better in our testing than the XJ-A246, and it?s also brighter?rated at 3,000 lumens.

Video: Supreme Court strikes down Stolen Valor Act

>>> while the supreme cortal rucortal -- court's rule was making headlines, an emotional issue. pitting military honor against freedom of speech . ? the justices struck down a federal law making it a crime to lie about receiving the medal of honor and other military awards saying the so-called stolen valor act violated free speech rights. now, the case involved xavier alvarez , a former local elected official in california. he publicly claimed he was a 25-year marine vet and was awarded the medal of honor . the nation's highest military award for heroic actions during the vietnam war . it was later reveal head never serves in the military at all. joining me, retired army colonel jack jacobs who were receive the medal's honor for heroism during the vietnam war . great to have you here. this is a story someone like you, my dad, a vietnam vet , following this closely to see how it would come down. when he look at the way the justices wrote their opinions, 6-3 ruling. the majority opinion , few mind find respondent statements anything but contemptible, his right to make the statements is protected by the constitution's guarantee of freedom of speech and expression . you share that sentiment, basically that this is totally off the wall to do something like this, but you can't go against their freedom of speech ?

>> more than off the wall. i'm only speaking for myself, but there are tens of millions of veteran whose also followed this very closely and find alvarez to be a contemptible, despicable revolting creature who isn't even worth the effort it would take to walk across the street and push him on his backside, to ? be honest with you, and there are plenty of he'll who would like to do that right now. the fact of the matter, he has a right to be a fool and within certain parameters to say whatever he wants to say. this is a first amendment court. time and time again, this court, even as conservative as it appears to be in many respects, has time and time again come down in favor of free speech , and nobody should be surprised that it did so this time, too.

>> jack, proponents of the 2006 law including the 2.4 million american legion and the vet, a book " stolen valor " inspired this law. he said, the medal of honor , the vat majority of the people awarded in a were killed in action in thes of of their country and we can't protect that declaration from disrespect. he has a valid understandable position of how he feels about this, and given the fact that it was posthumously given to most of our american heroes.

>> most of the recipients were posthumously awarded and-of-but lots of soldiers and sailors killed in action. nobody saw what they did. people saw it, when they themselves were killed and were not recognized for valor. not because they didn't do it, but because people didn't see it. there are lots of people, including me, upset by all this. a simple fix and the congress should have seen it coming. when you try to butt up against the first amendment you run into big problems. in order to turn the stolen valor act into a ? federal fraud act, it's very simple to do. if somebody does something to achieve a gain of some find kind, as alvarez did, that's puni punishable. lie on your income taxes. talk to a cop investigating and lie, you'll find yourselves behind bars quickly. we have to get the statute right, and we'll be able to prosecute properly.

>> when you talk about that, because it is a federal crime to wear the unearned medals, but the claims alvarez did, that isn't. when we talk about the gain of something, of wearing those medals and what that gains you, the respect of people or the thought --

>> ah, gaining respect is one thing. material gain is something else again. alvarez made these comments, got elected to a water board in california. for which i assume he was compensated in some way. any time you do something personal, not just self-grandizing as alvarez did certainly, also to get material gain as alvarez did you ought to be able to be prosecuted. i believe congress will act quickly to amend the law.

(AP Photo/Mel Evans)

(AP) ? The family of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi said they have come to believe he killed himself in part because of his roommate used a webcam to see him kissing another man.

"It was the humiliation that his roommates and his dorm-mates were watching him in a very intimate act. And that they were laughing behind his back," his mother, Jane Clementi said. "The last thing that Tyler looked at before he left the dorm room for the bridge (he jumped from) was the Twitter page, where (his roommate) was announcing Tyler's activities."

Jane Clementi, her husband and one of their surviving sons talked about Tyler's death and how their views on homosexuality have changed when they appeared Thursday night on NBC's "Rock Center" in the first interview the family has given since the bias intimidation trial of the 18-year-old's roommate.

The roommate, 20-year-old Dharun Ravi, was convicted in March of all 15 criminal charges he faced, including bias intimidation. Though a judge could have sent him to prison for up to 10 years, he sentenced him to 30 days in jail. Ravi spent 20 days behind bars after getting credit for good behavior and working.

The case attracted national attention after Clementi's suicide in September 2010, just days after the spying. With his death, Clementi became a symbol of the consequences of harsh treatment of young gays. Ravi, who apologized for his actions last month, was not charged with causing the death of Clementi, who jumped from the George Washington Bridge.

His parents, evangelical Christians, said their views on homosexuality have shifted since their son's death.

They say they went from struggling to accept that their son was gay when he came out to them just before starting at Rutgers to embracing that some people are gay.

"Sin needs to be taken out of homosexuality," said Tyler Clementi's father, Joe Clementi. "Our children need to understand ? and adults need to understand ? that they're not ... broken."

James Clementi, who is also gay, said he believes his brother may have been depressed ? but that the webcam spying exacerbated his problems and contributed to his suicide.

Don?t Expect A Full Read/Write Google+ API Anytime Soon, Google Doesn?t Want To Disrupt Something ?Magical?

GooglePlus-redDespite the fact that Google has been slowly launching more APIs for Google+, don't expect the company to launch a full read/write API anytime soon. During a Google+ platform fireside chat at Google I/O today, Google+ VP Bradley Horowitz and other members of the Google+ team said that Google is still taking a very deliberate approach to Google+'s APIs. The company, Horowitz said, doesn't want to "disrupt something very special" and "magical" by just opening up a full read/write API that would allow developers to write apps that can easily post to Google+.

Easter Island drug raises cognition throughout life span in mice

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Cognitive skills such as learning and memory diminish with age in everyone, and the drop-off is steepest in Alzheimer's disease. Texas scientists seeking a way to prevent this decline reported exciting results this week with a drug that has Polynesian roots.

The researchers, appointed in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, added rapamycin to the diet of healthy mice throughout the rodents' life span. Rapamycin, a bacterial product first isolated from soil on Easter Island, enhanced learning and memory in young mice and improved these faculties in old mice, the study showed.

"We made the young ones learn, and remember what they learned, better than what is normal," said Veronica Galvan, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, part of the UT Health Science Center. "Among the older mice, the ones fed with a diet including rapamycin actually showed an improvement, negating the normal decline that you see in these functions with age."

The drug also lowered anxiety and depressive-like behavior in the mice, Dr. Galvan said. Anxiety and depression are factors that impair human cognitive performance. Lead author Jonathan Halloran conducted scientifically reliable tests to accurately measure these cognitive components in the rodents.

Venturing into the open

Mice are burrowers that prefer tunnels with walls. To observe behavior, Halloran used an elevated maze of tunnels that led to a catwalk. "All of a sudden the mice are in open space," Halloran said. "It's pretty far from the floor for their size, sort of like if a person is hiking and suddenly the trail gets steep. It's pretty far down and not so comfortable."

Mice with less anxiety were more curious to explore the catwalk. "We observed that the mice fed with a diet containing rapamycin spent significantly more time out in the open arms of the catwalk than the animals fed with a regular diet," Halloran said.

The second test measured depressive-like behavior in the rodents. Mice do not like to be held by their tails, which is the way they are moved from cage to cage. Inevitably they struggle to find a way out. "So we can measure how much and how often they struggle as a measure of the motivation they have to get out of an uncomfortable situation," Dr. Galvan said.

Rapamycin acts like an antidepressant

Some mice barely struggle to get free, but if an antidepressant is administered they struggle a lot more. This behavior is very sensitive to the action of antidepressants and is a reliable measure of whether a drug is acting like an antidepressant, Dr. Galvan said.

"We found rapamycin acts like an antidepressant -- it increases the time the mice are trying to get out of the situation," she said. "They don't give up; they struggle more."

The reductions of anxiety and depressive-like behavior in rapamycin-treated mice held true for all ages tested, from 4 months of age (college age in human years) to 12 months old (the equivalent of middle age) to 25 months old (advanced age).

Feel-good chemicals elevated

The researchers measured levels of three "happy, feel-good" neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. All were significantly augmented in the midbrains of mice treated with rapamycin. "This is super-interesting, something we are going to pursue in the lab," Dr. Galvan said.

Dr. Galvan and her team published research in 2010 showing that rapamycin rescues learning and memory in mice with Alzheimer's-like deficits. The elevation of the three neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers in the brain, may explain how rapamycin accomplished this, Dr. Galvan said.

Rapamycin is an antifungal agent administered to transplant patients to prevent organ rejection. The drug is named for Rapa Nui, the Polynesian title for Easter Island. This island, 2,000 miles from any population centers, is the famed site of nearly 900 mysterious monolithic statues.

This study became available online June 28 as a manuscript in press in the journal Neuroscience.

microsoft-180-countries-in-windows-phone-8-marketplace

Now that the dust has settled on the big Windows Phone 8 hoedown, Redmond is filling in the details of all its announcements. To wit, it just released a list of the 180 countries that will get access to its WP marketplace and developer app hub. That number is a big jump from the 63 markets and 38 app hubs of today, and with in-app purchasing coming soon, Microsoft emphasized that point -- along with the 100,000 apps in stock -- to developers. The software giant also added that the marketplace will filter apps by phone screen resolution and "other key characterstics," allowing easier targeting of users. To see if your country made the cut, check the source for the very long list.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Ban the Latest Stumble on a Road to Success

Samsung is finding the climb to the top of the mobile industry to be a slippery one.

In Samsung?s ongoing patent disputes with Apple, a U.S. District judge in California, Lucy Koh, sided with Apple June 26, ruling that Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet should not be available for sale in the United States. Following rulings in Germany and Australia, hers was the third court to decide this.

?Although Samsung has a right to compete, it does not have a right to compete unfairly, by flooding the market with infringing products,? Koh wrote, according to a report from Reuters. The order will become effective once Apple posts a $2.6 million bond, meant to protect Samsung from any damages suffered, should the injunction later be found to be incorrect.

Even with this safety net in place, Samsung?s legal team didn?t rest for a moment. The lawyers filed an appeal approximately five hours later??record time,? wrote consultant and patent expert Florian Mueller on his Foss Patents blog. Mueller added that the ruling gives strength to Apple?s ?copycat? allegations, which say the iPad and Galaxy Pad 10.1 are ?substantially similar.? In court, according to Mueller, Koh held up both devices at a distance, and Samsung?s legal counsel was unable to tell them apart. Not great for Samsung?s argument.

In competing against the Apple iPhone, Samsung would appear to be having better luck. Sales of its Galaxy S III smartphone are expected to exceed 10 million units by July, JK Shin, head of Samsung?s mobile division, told reporters earlier this week, adding that second-quarter revenue is expected to exceed that of its first.

During the first quarter of 2012, Apple?s smartphone sales increased 88.7 percent year-over-year. ?Samsung?s smartphone shipments grew 267 percent during that time, according to IDC.

Meeting such demand, however, is proving trickier than Samsung expected, and now it isn?t expected to deliver the devices before the close of its second-quarter, June 30, shifting its revenue to the second half of the year.

Investment firm Barclays cut its second-quarter Samsung Galaxy S III sales forecast but raised its forecast for the third-quarter.

After debuting in 28 countries May 29, the Galaxy S III was to launch in the United States on the Sprint and T-Mobile networks June 21, before continuing on to Verizon Wireless, AT&T and U.S. Cellular. When the date arrived, however, T-Mobile had only 16GB models in stock. Sprint was made to issue a statement saying that due to worldwide ?overwhelming demand,? it had zilch to offer.

On June 28 Sprint finally shared that 16GB and 32GB models, in both blue and white, will be available July 1.

AT&T has been coy about the phone?s sales date all along, saying it will ship in July, but now it, too, is citing ?supply constraints,? and with July nearing, it still has no firm date for shipping even preordered devices.

The Verizon Wireless site maintains that its Galaxy S III devices will ship by July 11.

Samsung is said to also be dealing with the matter of competitors swarming it in the low-end smartphone market, forcing the company to consider price dips on already inexpensive phones designed for markets such as China. However, analysts told The Wall Street Journal, according to a June 28 report, that as long as sales of high-end smartphones remain strong, no one is too concerned.

?We are convinced that the company?s earnings cycle is still far from the peak,? brokerage firm Barclays reported, according to The Journal.

While Samsung may occasionally lose its footing, unlike too many of its competitors, it is at least on the right road and headed in the right direction.

UTC, subsidiaries guilty for aiding China's military attack helicopter

BRIDGEPORT -- United Technologies and two of its subsidiaries, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. and Hamilton Sundstrand in Windsor Locks, pleaded guilty Thursday to several federal charges stemming from the sale of engine control software to China that enabled that country to build its first military attack helicopter.

As part of a plea-bargained agreement, UTC, one of the country's major defense contractors and based in Hartford, will pay more than $75 million in fines and penalties, of which $55 million is for 500 additional violations involving another 800 other exports.

The company will pay $35 million over four years but $20 million may be suspended if UTC completes various compliance measures. This includes hiring an independent export compliance monitor and training employees in that area at all of its facilities.

UTC and Hamilton Sundstrand pleaded guilty to making false statement to the State Department while Hamilton also admitted not reporting exports to an embargoed country in a timely manner.

Pratt & Whitney Canada was the main player in the violations, according to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven Reynolds and Michael Gustafson.

Officials there apparently pursued the military helicopter contract in the hopes of obtaining $2 billion in additional work helping China build a similar civilian copter. Hamilton allegedly believed that the software used to operate engines built by Pratt & Whitney Canada would be used in a civilian copter.

The software provides the necessary engine codes to operate the helicopter, Reynolds said. He added that without it China probably wouldn't be able to construct approximately a dozen helicopters. China never built the civilian version.

"... Pratt &Whitney Canada knowingly turned a blind eye to the attack helicopter application and went along with (China's claim) of a parallel civil program," court documents charge.

During the proceedings before Senior U.S. District Judge Warren W. Eginton, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. pleaded guilty to violating the Export Control Act by selling the software it obtained from Hamilton Sundstrand to China, making false statements to the State Department and failing to report exports to an embargoed country in a timely matter to the U.S.

Of the $75 million UTC is paying, $4.6 million represents a fine to Pratt & Whitney Canada and $2.3 million represents its profit from the sale and will be forfeited by Pratt.

Congress placed China on an export embargo list shortly after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

The illegalities were uncovered by a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent assigned to the attache office in Canada.

"This case is a clear example of how the illegal export of sensitive technology reduces the advantages our military currently possesses," said ICE Director John Morton. "I am hopeful that the conviction of Pratt & Whitney Canada and the substantial penalty levied against United Technologies and its subsidiaries will deter other companies from considering similarly ill-conceived business practices in the future. American military prowess depends on lawful, controlled exports of sensitive technology by U.S. industries and their subsidiaries, which is why ICE will continue its present campaign to aggressively investigate and prosecute criminal violations of U.S. export laws relating to national security."

Bruce Foucart, special agent in charge of the ICE New England office, said China is "one of the most aggressive and capable collectors of U.S. technology. The Chinese government is motivated in their desire to achieve military parity with the U.S."

An local aerospace analyst was shocked by the guilty pleas but conceded that entry into the Chinese helicopter market "is a huge prize."

"It does surprise me," said Will Alibrandi, who specializes in engine technology for Newtown-based Forecast International. "I would think there would be tighter control on where the engine technology is going."

But Alibrandi doubts these events will affect UTC and its subsidiaries' defense business.

"You're not going to see contracts being canceled because of it," he said.

The engine involved in the transaction is not used on many U.S. military helicopters. General Electric Co. supplies the engines for Sikorsky's Black Hawk and Boeing's Apache. The Pratt Canada engine is used on Air Force trainers, he noted.

UTC and its subsidary hired James T. Cowdery and Thomas Murphy, both former Connecticut assistant U.S. attorneys, to represent it.

"We accept responsibility for these past violations and we deeply regret they occurred," said Louis Chenevert, UTC's chairman and chief executive officer.

Since 2006, he said UTC assigned 175 executives, managers and professionals full-time to work export compliance and hundreds more on a part time basis. The company invested more than $30 million since 2006 to strengthen compliance, according to Chenevert.

"Safeguarding out military technology is vital to our nation's defense and the protection of our military men and women," said Ed Bradley, who heads the northeast division of the U.S. Defense Criminal Investigative Services, which partnered in the investigation. "We know that foreign governments are actively seeking U.S. defense technology for their own development. Thwarting these efforts is a top priority for DCIS."

21 EBay Inventory Management and Online Selling Tools ? SMB ...

In the fourth quarter of 2011, eBay Marketplaces reported 100 million active users worldwide. According to eBay on its marketplace a woman?s dress sells every 8 seconds and someone buys a cell phone every 5 seconds. ?

EBay is still a very popular buying and selling platform and used by many different types of sellers ? SOHO ecommerce owners, part-time eBay enthusiasts and large businesses. Different sellers need different eBay tools.? While eBay offers its own listing tools, you may find ? like many other people do ? that eBay?s tools don?t provide the listing features you need; for example, listing your inventory across multiple auctions sites in addition to your own Web store.

NCAA Athletic Department Leadership?

On a number of occasions, both on collegevolleyballcoach.com and Inside College Volleyball, I have written about The One and Done recruiting mentality. ?Unfortunately, this new mentality has mutated into The None and Done.

As a quick review, The One and Done is where an incoming player is cut from the program after one season of collegiate play because they did not live up to the skill expectations of the coach. ?The None and Done, is where early verbally committed players are not being sent the National Letter of Intent as Seniors (the document which binds the player and school) because the player has not developed at an anticipated pace. ?This is the quick version of these terms and can be understood better by clicking the Labels links or reading Inside College Volleyball.

Because I am in the middle of doing a number of my Volleyball Road Camps, I have a lot of time to think as I am driving between schools and I was pondering why this system has come into common use. ?When I write about these new protocols, I am talking in broad terms and don't want to suggest that all coaches operate in these terms. ?But, it is a mentality which is being adopted by more and more collegiate coaches of all playing categories.

The Final Score is that the Athletic Directors have vacated their leadership role, and abandoned the role of collegiate athletics.

While it is easy to lay blame upon the collegiate coaches for the recruiting/player management trend of The One and Done, the coaches would not do this unless the Athletic Directors allowed it. ?There was a bit of a snowball effect to this trend. A couple of schools were known within the collegiate coaching circles for moving players off their rosters who could not potentially start by their sophomore year. ?One by one, more college coaches started using this same roster management technique, and as more coaches saw their peer being able to yearly adjust their roster, the more joined the parade.

As the recruiting process moved into a very early stance with evaluating PSA's and extending scholarship offers to Sophomores, then Freshman, it created the environment where a certain percentage of these early committed PSA's were naturally not going to get much better. Some PSA's look to have big potential, but in reality, they only get a bit better from their Sophomore to Senior year. ?In the past, coaches were hesitant to extend early scholarships just in case what we saw (big potential as a Freshman/Sophomore) was not the reality (of a Senior). ?With the development of The None and Done, collegiate coaches don't even need to worry about having an unproductive player on their collegiate roster.

You may ask, "How can the coach move players off the roster, or not even honor verbal scholarship offers, and still keep winning?". ?Two answers, 1) There is more Volleyball talent now, than at any time in the past. ?Elite International Student-Athletes are abundant and the USA is still the world's bright light. ?High School and Club Volleyball is growing, and especially so as the southeastern United States discovers that the sport is a great opportunity for their female athletes. ?Junior College Volleyball is becoming a prime recruiting ground for NCAA coaches because they can recruit seasoned players, who are more mature and academically established. ?2) ?As long as the to be cut Student-Athlete is eligible to compete the next season, there is no NCAA APR penalty for cutting the player. ?These two situations allow coaches to cut current SA's, and not honor verbal commitments to PSA's because there is no NCAA consequences, and the talent pool will provide a better volleyball player immediately.

That is the rational or logic for the development and utilization of The One and Done, and now The None and Done of collegiate recruiting and volleyball. ?But, while blame should be laid upon the coaches, the ultimate responsibility of this environment being allowed to exist and propagate is the Athletic Directors.

They are the director's of the Athletic Department, they are the final say about how a program operates. ?When I first became a collegiate coach, you only cut a player if they had repeatedly broken team rules, or embarrassed the school in some significant manner. ?These 'removal from the team' instances were all for behavioral issues, and negative behaviors which were demonstrated on many occasions.

There was no way any of my earlier Athletic Directors would allow a coach to cut a player for ability, and if I remember correctly, the NCAA rules were distinct in saying that a player's scholarship could not be terminated or reduced because of ability (or lack of). ?The Athletic Directors conveyed the (now ancient) philosophy that if we coaches overrated a PSA, then it was our job to develop the skills and at least develop a practice player. ?And even before the PSA arrived to campus, once a verbal commitment was made between the player and the school (for which the college coach is the representative), this commitment was honored no matter how well, or not, the player developed or if there was a coaching change.

In my memory of my early athletic departments, the Athletic Directors set the tone that integrity mattered. ?Winning and losing were just part of the equation, not the bottom line of collegiate athletics. ?Following NCAA rules, treating the student-athletes and fellow coaches with respect, athletics as part of the experience of being associated with institutions of higher learning were all championed. ?Winning was a by product of doing things the right way and Athletic Directors would not tolerate winning at the expense of doing things the right way. ?Today, they tolerate and encourage it.

Why the change? ?I believe it is because the Athletic Directors have developed tunnel vision - Their entire focus is on the bottom line of revenue......more and more athletic directors have never played collegiate sports, ever. ?They are money managers, and as money managers, they don't know the sweat and challenge and joy and pain and sacrifice and tears and camaraderie of being a collegiate student athlete and/or collegiate coach.

The current Athletic Director's job is dependent upon staying under budget and if at all possible, making money for the university. ?This is how their compensation is structured, and this is how they have job security. ?The dollar sign is what gets the attention, what is always managed. ?Everything now relates directly to this bottom line. ?It is no longer about student-athletes and coaches, it is about ticket sales, television exposure, marketing deals, staff salaries, contract buyouts.

Student-Athletes have become pawns in the money of collegiate athletics - Any doubt of this, all you need to do is read the dollar amounts being bandied about with the new National Championship format for football. ?With the exception of Football and Basketball, all other collegiate coaches have also become pawns in the system; we may have always been pawns, but at least the old school athletic directors had the decency to not make it blatantly obvious.

How does this affect today's VolleyFamilies? ?First of all, you need to understand the new reality of athletics, and everything is viewed through the prism of budgets because the Athletic Directors, as the gate keepers, value this element above all else.

Protect yourself by making sure you are doing exemplary research about the school, the athletic department and the volleyball program/coach when you are going through the recruiting process. ?Too many families don't do their research, they are still operating under the athletic's mentality of 10 years ago, and they pay the price of family heartache when their daughter gets cut. ?

Once you are on campus as a student-athlete, conduct yourself both on and off the court perfectly. ?Don't provide the coach the rational to cut you by your actions or lack of. ?Make sure your grades and unit counts are at their highest, so if everything blows up, you are well on your way to obtaining your degree.

Understand that the new protocols for college volleyball recruiting and administration were created by the coaches, but allowed to exist and manifest by the Athletic Directors. ?Because the Athletic Directors have given their tacit approval to this protocol, VolleyFamilies have no safety net.
