For the first time since it launched, Apple?s (AAPL) iPhone 4S is not the top-selling smartphone in the United States, according to channel checks performed by?Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. The Cupertino-based company is widely expected to announce its next-generation iPhone next week, leading a large number of consumers to delay their smartphone purchases until then. At the same time, Samsung (005930) is pushing its newly released?Galaxy S III smartphone, which has become the best-selling device on three of the four major U.S. carriers. The iPhone 4S remained the top-selling smartphone on AT&T (T), although the Galaxy S III was able to outsell the handset at Verizon (VZ) and Sprint (S). Despite Samsung?s recent success, however, Walkley believes that come

Our dogs are there for us no entity what happens; in unspoiled times or bad present, paradisaical or sad. They?re inactivity for us when we get plate after a protracted day at play and they kindle us up with a grin and ending wag apiece and every period. Dogs are our someone friends, our invariant companions, our children.
But dogs are more than upright our line members. They are extremely prehensile animals that furnish numerous weighty services that lasting record in the Cohesive States dating position to Humans War II.
Background:
After the onset on Pearl Shelter during Experience War II, a movement began hopeful dog owners to donate their dogs to assist the Blue. Thusly began the grooming of the ?K-9 Corps.? Commodity preparation was 8-12 weeks and the dogs were drilled to broadcast out commands (sit, order, turn, etc.), journey in warriorlike vehicles, prettify wonted to the noises of war, etc. After the initial training was exhaustive, each dog went on to specialised trip between the two and have messages.
- Scouts: Using the dogs? lancinate significance of perceive and hearing, Scouts were disciplined to silently ascertain booby traps, snipers, unseeable weapons, etc.

So the folks over at "Be the Robot" decided to make a cute little robot that could be controlled via your mobile phone. Not surprisingly, they decided to launch the thing on Kickstarter. You might notice that the robot has some resemblance to the Android robot... but it's not quite the same.
Just after we had uploaded the complete project on Kickstarter and about to press the ?Submit to the world button? ?we started to second guess ourselves and wanted to know are we really allowed to do this? So, it's sorta a little like the Android bot, but not quite, because no one could tell them definitively one way or the other if doing what they wanted to do was allowed. Isn't permission culture just great? After further investigations, as well as talking to a few lawyer friends, we discovered that the Google Bug Droid in 2D form and in printed materials is in fact Open Source, so anyone can stick it on posters and make cut outs. But there seemed to be a gray area regarding the issue of whether a 3D version is in fact allowed for resale. So instead of killing the project or possibly getting into legal issues, we thought it would be a good idea to meet with some higher-ups at the Google Android headquarters and hear what they had to say.
To make a long story short, at this meeting (during which we felt like we were on a reality TV show) the concept was well received, but there was not definitive answer as to ?Yay? or ?Nay?. ![]()
Not wanting to kill the project after having already put so much work into it, and to make sure we could launch without any issues; we redesigned the outside shell to have a different appearance, while maintaining the same internal integrity and design we developed in the BERO secret lair.

Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is making his four-year, $36 million deal look like a bargain, NBCSports.com contributor Tony DeMarco writes.
ASK THE MLB EXPERT
updated 4:45 p.m. ET Sept. 4, 2012
|
Q: How do you explain what the A's are doing this season?
-- Don Hastings, Oakland, Calif.
A: They really have come out of nowhere, haven't they? I questioned their off-season moves, especially trading away three good, young pitchers (Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill and Andrew Bailey) they could have had under control at reasonable costs for a couple more seasons.
And through the first two months ? when the A's were eight games under .500 ? it appeared as if this $50 million roster (down from $67 million 2011) was going to struggle through another losing season.
But since June 2, when they broke a nine-game losing streak, the A's are playing .667 baseball (54-28 entering Tuesday), and writing a much different story. How, you ask?
Moves we thought could pay off a bit down the road are paying immediate dividends. Yoenis Cespedes' four-year, $36 million deal looks like a bargain now, as he's on pace for a .295-20 HRs-80 RBIs-20 SBs rookie season.
Vice president/general manager Billy Beane and his evaluators also hit home runs on the talent that came back in the trades: Josh Reddick for Bailey, Jarrod Parker and Ryan Cook for Cahill, Tommy Milone and Derek Norris for Gonzalez.
And even stop-gap veterans Brandon Inge, Jonny Gomes and Stephen Drew are making contributions.
You expect an A's staff to post one of the league's best ERAs given their pitcher-friendly home ballpark, and that's the case again, as the A's are second at 3.42. But what's unusual here is that manager Bob Melvin has been forced to use 10 different starting pitchers because of injuries and Bartolo Colon's suspension.
But typical of how things are breaking the right way, Colon hasn't been missed, as Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson have come off the disabled list and made the rotation even tougher of late. The A's won nine in a row and 15 of 18 heading into Tuesday.Offensively, the A's have been climbing since June and sit ninth in the AL in runs scored (just ahead of two other contenders in the Orioles and Rays), and 10th in slugging percentage.
What they lack in batting average (13th in the AL), they make up in power (seventh in homers), and eight players in double figures in home runs.
But one note of caution: If the A's do make a very unexpected postseason appearance, they will have earned it because their schedule will be very difficult down the stretch. It's the most-difficult remaining schedule of any AL contender, with all contenders except the Mariners, who have a winning record since the All-Star break. In series order:
Vs. Los Angeles (three games), @ Seattle (three), @ Los Angeles (four), Vs. Baltimore (three), @ Detroit (three), @ New York (three), @ Texas (four), Vs. Seattle (three), Vs. Texas (three).
Q: What could possibly be wrong with Jon Lester? How does such a talented pitcher turn so drastically without an apparent injury?
-- Jim Pasqurell, Aurora, N.C.
A: Lester has had some dings along the way, the latest a leg cramp that forced him from an Aug. 24 start after seven innings. But you're right, there is nothing serious enough to keep him from making starts and racking up innings, and that makes his lack of success this season more mystifying.
Sometimes there can be a fine line between very good and mediocre. Lester's peripheral stats are down, but not enough to warrant a big rise in ERA ? 5.01 this season compared to a 3.75 career mark and a 2008-11 run of 3.21, 3.41, 3.25 and 3.47.
His opponents' batting average is up to .273 ? 24 points higher than his career .249 mark and well above his previous four-year run of .256, .242, .220 and .234. Lester's strikeouts per nine innings also are down to 7.51 from 8.55 in 2011 and a high of 9.96 in 2009.
But his walk rate actually is better than the past two seasons, his WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) is only .07 higher than his career mark (1.37 to 1.30),? and he's throwing the exact number of pitches per inning (16.7) as he did last season, and only .1 more than his career average (16.6).?
So despite the dropoff in results, there's nothing that makes you think this is a long-term decline, or that a bounce back in 2013 isn't possible. After four excellent seasons by Lester, he's simply experiencing a down year ? and you can say that about the Red Sox as a whole, can't you?

HBT: The Yankees were alone in first place for 84 straight days, but that all changed with a loss to the Rays and an impressive rout of the Blue Jays by the surprising Orioles.

The Teachers' Lounge is a place I never hung out in when I taught English to 8th graders for 15 or so years. I'm not tight with the people who like to talk IP communications International Enquirer gossip, but I do pay attention to knowledge and experience that coders, evangelists, early adopters and potential customers of open source telephony, VoIP and such ... post that they want and that they have.
Not long ago, Olle Johansson of Edvina AB updated one of the most versatile and useful VoIP groups on Facebook with this comment, "I just noticed that Xorcom have released SIP phones. Any experiences in this group? http://www.xorcom.com/images/stories/mktgdocs/xp-series-ip-phones-brochure.pdf"
Of course, I am a glutton for the usual eerie silence or mad debate -- the former is most often true -- that follows my posts online especially in open source forums, but I still replied with my transparent, positive, smiling self, "Their own brand! I'll ask around in my other ip comm - filled networks, Olle."
Within a few weeks, I lucked out and collaborated with Ruth Bridger, the VP of marketing at Xorcom in recording the second of two audio podcasts with her in which their new SIP phones were discussed along with her travels through Lithuania for search of family roots and Russia where she was surprised at the beauty, views on open source telephony, and how IP communications events sometimes clash with important religious holidays.
The Xorcom VP of marketing talks specifically about their new SIP phones about seven minutes into an audio podcast interview. Listen and send me your comments here and to her ... your comments on the Xorcom blog or contact us page.
Ruth Bridger and I laughed together about how much has changed over the past 1/2 century that I have lived such as ...
1. I took a mandatory class my junior year of high school called Americanism vs Communism. No joke.
2. ?She remembered the cartoon Bullwinkle and his?villainous Russian enemies Boris Badenov and Natashia Fatale which was popular from 1959, the year I was born, through its last episode in 1964 and reruns after that. I remember the lead character moose's positive outlook in life with his most repeated statement, "Now, here's something we hope you'll really like!"
3. We remember when no one used a cell phone, TV was only black and white, and seeing people while you talk to them on the phone ... was ... science fiction.

iOS 6 was previewed at Apple's WWDC 2012 and has been in a closed developer beta ever since. While Apple has promised some 200 new features, we've only seen them show off 10 major ones to date. Still, there's a lot within those 10 for us to sink out teeth into. We've compared them to previous iOS flagship features, and to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Windows Phone 8, and BlackBerry 10 flagship features, and explained why the focus this year might be more on Apple's platform than user-facing features. We've also broken them down feature by feature, looked at what Apple's has said about them, and analyzed what they have to offer.
Now we're rounding all the up here, and we'll keep it updated here through the Gold Master (GM) seed we expect on September 12, and the release we anticipate sometime around September 19.
With iOS 6, Apple is replacing the previous, Google-powered Maps app on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, with a completely redesigned, re-rendered, and re-imagined Apple Maps app. The data itself is supplied by TomTom and others, but Apple has created all-new vector map art, and while they've lost some features, like Street View, and are handing off transit date to App Store apps, they're adding a dramatic new Flyover mode, traffic data, and turn-by-turn navigation. And if you miss the old app, good news, a Google Maps app should be headed to the App Store as well.
Siri, as introduced in on the iPhone 4S, is an able if not particularly well-rounded personal assistant. With iOS 6, however, Siri is adding several new services to its repertoire. Soon, with Siri, you'll be able to find out everything about your favorite sports teams, make reservations at your favorite restaurants, find out where your favorite movies are playing, share it all to Facebook and Twitter, and... do it on the new iPad as well.
Facebook integration for iOS has been rumored for a couple years now, buy iOS 4 shipped with nary a Like in sight, and iOS 5 with only Twitter and tweets to show for itself. With iOS 6 Facebook hits the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad in full force. We're talking built-in status sharing, content sharing, calendar and contacts integration, and a whole lot of stuff you can Like, built-in.
Photo Stream debuted in iOS 5 as part of iCloud and while it offered some nifty automatic backup and sync store and push features, it lacked a lot of the sharing and gallery features that made Mobile Me so family friendly. Now, with iOS 6, Apple is adding sharing back to their cloud photo solution, and while it's not the same as before, it could be just as social.
Passbook is a brand new, built-in app for iOS 6 designed to serve as a one-stop repository for all the tickets, coupons, gift cards, and other vouchers provided by third-party App Store apps. That means all the stuff in your Apple Store app, Starbucks app, Delta app, Fandango app, and more is easily accessible via a single Home screen icon, and what's more -- Passbook knows what time it is and where you are, so it can put whatever card you need right on your Lock screen, right when you need it.
FaceTime over cellular -- the ability to place Apple's version of video calls using 3G and 4G networks -- is coming with iOS 6. Thanks to the carriers being insane, it took 2 years to happen, and even now might be painful, but it's coming. Also coming is the ability to unify your iPhone FaceTime phone number and iPad/iPod touch FaceTime email address, so you no longer have to try and guess which one to reach a multi-device user at.
While Apple improved their alert system with Notification Center in iOS 5, they're finally bringing some sanity and serenity to it with iOS 6. Too much notification turns into interruption, especially if your only options are to answer or hang up, to leave everything on or turn everything off. It makes us the single-points of failure in our memory chain, and let's face it, why bother having these fancy devices if we're the ones who have to remember to call back, or remember to activate and deactivate alerts every morning and night. Which brings us to Remind Me Later and Do Not Disturb.
Mail is getting a little bit of love in iOS 6 as well. First off, you'll be able to designate certain contacts as VIPs, which flag their emails with stars, and collects them in a special VIP inbox, and syncs them over iCloud so your VIPs are VIPs on all your iOS devices. Secondly, the already crowded popup menu gets yet another option, and a great one, Insert Photo or Video. That's right, you can finally add items from your Camera Roll to an email already in progress without the copy/paste hack-around.
Safari has been on the iPhone since the first version launched in 2007, and has been steadily improved, year after year, version after version, ever since. iOS 6 follows the same, steady, evolutionary pattern, addressing long standing user pain-points like image uploads, and providing parity with features from other browsers, like Chrome's tab sync. It also makes Reading List more robust, and provides an interesting way for websites to alert users about, and move them into, apps.
Something that Apple absolutely does not get enough credit for is their longstanding -- and outstanding -- support for accessibility features, and iOS 6 is no exception. To the already impressive list of accessibility features, Apple is adding Guided Access, a way to lock the iPad into a single app, to help people with autism or similar challenges work independently, without having to worry about accidentally closing an app. It also provides single-app mode functionality for everyone, which makes the iPad far more useful for everything from school tests to mall kiosks.
Experiencing an iOS keynote like WWDC 2012 today, and watching Senior Vice President of iOS, Scott Forstall, lay out the new flagship features for iOS 6 -- what Apple's has called tent poles in the past -- it can be hard to weigh them against flagship features of the past, and to judge them free from expectations.
When compared side by side -- or slide to slide -- with keynotes past, the impact of each step of Apple's iOS evolution become easier to measure. Here's the full rundown:
It's harder to compare iOS 6 to Android 4.1, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8, since they not only made different design choices and engineering compromises, they made different marketing decision about which features to showcase -- sometimes deliberately to counter-program Apple and/or each other. But for that very reason, to highlight the differences, the comparison is especially interesting. Here's the side-by-side (scroll down to the second section of the article).
Looking at everything we just went through, some may argue iOS 6 is more of a minor point release rather than a major new OS version. Or that was inattentive to power-user interests, and a sign that Apple was slowing down. Sure, the low hanging fruit is gone for iOS, but a lot of higher-hanging fruit remains.
However, that's not Apple's focus this year. This year, there's no iPhone OS 2.0 App Store-level feature addition for iOS. No iOS 5 PC-free/iCloud-level addition either. There's not even an iOS 4 or iPhone OS 3.0 multitasking or cut, copy, and paste-level addition. No new Home screen interfaces or fast app switcher visualizations. No actionable notifications or methods for inter-app communications. What there is, is all about Apple. And here's why:

For the 16th consecutive policy meeting, the Bank of Canada has decided to keep its benchmark target for the overnight rate steady at one per cent. The world's economy is expanding at roughly the pace Canada's central bank was anticipating, the bank said Wednesday. Europe's economy is in crisis and the U.S. economy is expanding at a gradual pace ? two factors putting a damper on Canada's prospects. Despite those headwinds, the bank said it expects Canada's economy to pick up the pace next year. But not, apparently, enough to compel the bank to raise its target for the overnight rate ? yet. "To the extent that the economic expansion continues and the current excess supply in the economy is gradually absorbed, some modest withdrawal of the present considerable monetary policy stimulus may become appropriate," the bank said. That's the central bank's way of saying it is leaning toward raising rates slightly, whenever it deems the time is appropriate. The bank said Canadian consumer debt levels continue to be a "burden," but described the level of business investment ? a key sign that the private sector is spending and investing to grow the economy ? as "solid." Low rates help stimulate Canada's economy. But cheap borrowing has compelled Canadians to take on more debt, which means the central bank must walk a fine line. The Royal Bank of Canada said that to a certain extent, the central bank's hands are tied in terms of being able to ...

1. The target can be (very) small.?One of the prevailing and more damaging security myths is that small businesses are too insignificant for online crooks to bother with. ?Who?d waste their time on little old me?? you ask. You might be surprised. First off, just about every legitimate business has a bank account, if not several of them. Banking and other financial accounts are obvious bull?s-eyes for bad guys. Customer databases and HR files???which often include social security numbers, credit card numbers, and other sensitive info???are also attractive to thieves. Honan?s experience shows that a target doesn?t even need to have any monetary value. His attackers didn?t empty out his bank account or run up his credit card bill: They hijacked his Twitter handle.
2. Apple is not a safe haven.?Apple?s operating systems (the software that makes Macs, iPads, and iPhones work) have a reputation for being very secure and relatively free of the malware and other harmful junk that Windows PC users contend with. Honan?s case is a harsh reminder that security is much more than Trojan horses, keyloggers, and other online plagues. By gaining access to Honan?s Apple ID, the attackers were able to take control of???and effectively ruin???his MacBook, iPad, and iPhone. That little bit of information led to breaches of his Gmail and Twitter accounts, too. ?You honestly can get into any email associated with Apple,? one of Honan?s attackers later told him. No hardware or software is fail-safe. Don?t assume you?re secure simply because you use Apple?s or any other company?s products. It?s just not true.
3. Don?t link online accounts.?The bad guys were able to run roughshod over Honan?s digital life in large part because he linked, or ?daisy-chained,? various accounts together. ?My Twitter account linked to my personal website, where they found my Gmail address,? he writes. And that was just part of a snowballing sequence. This practice can be especially risky for small-business owners and self-employed professionals who mix and match technology for work and personal uses. Mobile devices, email accounts, and social media are common culprits.
4. Back your data up.?Honan acknowledges that he bears part of the responsibility for his data loss, because he failed to back up his files, particularly those on his MacBook. As a result, he lost everything saved on his laptop. He later recovered much of it, but data-recovery services like the one Honan used are expensive???he shelled out nearly $1,700???and far from guaranteed to work. Honan called the recovery of his files a ?miracle.? The bottom line: Back up your information. There are myriad options for doing so, online and off. Several online platforms, including Google Drive and Microsoft?s SkyDrive, offer a decent amount of starter space???5GB or more???for free. If you?re uneasy about storing sensitive business information online, do so on an external hard drive or other physical storage media. Just don?t keep it in the same place as your primary copies.?Otherwise, you?re not protected from other kinds of disasters, such as a fire or flood.
What else can you do to protect yourself and your business? In the wake of Honan?s story, Google recommends enabling two-factor authentication on your accounts. Use strong passwords and change them regularly???and avoid using the same username and password combinations across accounts, which makes attacks like this even easier.
Remember: This type of digital disaster can happen to anyone. The worst mistake is to assume it can?t happen to you.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Democrats say answering the question of whether Americans are better off now than they were four years ago requires some context.
Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren tells NBC's "Today" show Tuesday that people should remember how far the economy fell and how hard it is to get back from a time when the stock market was crashing and the auto industry was a mess. She says the real issue is who has the best plan to move forward.
Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, meanwhile, says to ask the millions of people out of work if they are better off. He noted on ABC "Good Morning America" that unemployment remains above 8 percent, despite President Barack Obama's stimulus plan.
The question is a major talking point as the Democratic National Convention kicks off Tuesday.

Christy Kimball began cooking in earnest during her years at college when she and her roommates decided to each take a turn cooking one night per week. With a binder of her mom?s favorite recipes she set out into the world of meal preparation.
Kimball, who lives with her husband Drew and two children just outside of nearby Johns Creek, explains that she likes the structure of having a good recipe to follow when she cooks. Kimball says that, ?I enjoy following a recipe and seeing it turn out well. As long as I have a good recipe I?m good to go.??
With two young children to care for, Kimball prefers to keep cooking as simple as possible. ?I like to use primarily ingredients that I normally have in my pantry.? She also likes to make meatloaf and other dishes that she can prepare ahead of time and then pop them in the oven when it?s time to cook.
Kimball plans the weekly menus and then both she and husband Drew do the cooking on different nights. During the week there will be basic protein, starch and green vegetable combos for a couple of nights. They also try to have one non-meat dinner and one pasta meal per week.
The recipe below is one of Kimball?s favorite pasta/non-meat dishes. Her kids love it; it?s good for serving to guests and good as a cold leftover. That about covers every base. ?
Asparagus Pasta Serves about 6-8 and can be a side or main dish.
Ingredients:
prep:
Prepare pasta as noted on the box.
Snap off tough ends of asparagus and cut in 2? pieces.
Saut? asparagus in hot oil in large skillet over medium heat for 2 min.
Add red bell pepper & garlic; cook stirring occasionally for 2 min.
Stir in chicken broth and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat & simmer for 2 min or until asparagus is crisp-tender.
Stir in salt, pepper and basil if you?re using dried basil.
Toss together pasta, asparagus mixture, fresh basil, ? cup of Parmesan cheese, butter and ? cup toasted pecans.
For presentation: Sprinkle evenly with remaining ? cup Parmesan cheese & ??cup pecans. Or, as Kimball says, ?Typically I just mix all of it together since my family isn't impressed with presentation.??
This is good served hot or cold.

MIAMI (AP) -Clint Dempsey started Monday with some fitness testing, then spoke eagerly of training for a few more hours in South Florida's sweltering heat and humidity.
It sure beats the waiting game he's been playing the last few months.
The U.S. forward finally has matches to prepare for again. He hasn't played in a competitive game since June, a streak he hopes to see end Friday when the Americans head to Jamaica for the start of a home-and-home World Cup qualifying series that could go a long way toward which nation gets to take control of Group A.
And it all comes not long after his status in Europe was finally sorted out - with him now playing for Tottenham after more than five years with Fulham.
"I'm very relieved. Looking forward to getting back to playing," Dempsey said. "I think the new team is a perfect fit. They qualified for a place last season for Champions League but missed out on a technicality. But it's still in London. My family doesn't have to move far. My daughter, she can go to another international school and be on the same curriculum. It couldn't have worked out any better in that regard."
The Americans will train in Miami until flying to Jamaica on Wednesday.
Dempsey led Fulham with 23 goals last season, and has long spoken of his desire to play at the highest level - which, for him, means Champions League. Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League last season, but missed out on getting into the Champions League after Chelsea won the title and England's last qualifying spot, the "technicality" Dempsey spoke of.
For weeks, it seemed like Dempsey was headed to Liverpool. Talks broke down, and it wasn't until the trade window was nearly closed before Fulham struck a deal with Tottenham.
In his eyes, whether Tottenham is actually in the elite tournament field or not, Dempsey sees himself now as part of a Champions League-caliber club.
"I'm disappointed in the way I was portrayed, in the end, with Fulham," Dempsey said. "I always wanted to play at the highest level possible. That was never a secret. That's something I always said. It would be a dream of mine to play Champions League and you want to play on the best team possible to try to get there. That's definitely a team with a lot of quality in it, but now it's all about the team that I'm with."
The saga started over the summer, when Dempsey - who was in the last year of his Fulham deal - first was linked to Liverpool when Reds coach Brendan Rodgers acknowledged inquiring about his availability. Fulham coach Martin Jol later said Dempsey refused to play for the club, one of the salvos in a back-and-forth that led to Dempsey tweeting that there were two sides to the story.
On Monday, Dempsey said he was simply relieved to look ahead.
"There were some things that were said that weren't true," Dempsey said. "That's in the past now. It's about looking toward the future and like I said, I'm looking forward to playing with Tottenham. It's a great team, a great club. I want to thank the fans of Fulham. It's been 5 1/2 great years. Some of my best memories in football have been there. I want to thank the chairman for taking a chance on me from MLS and I wish them well in the future."
Of course, his future - his immediate future, anyway - is wearing the red, white and blue against Jamaica over the next couple weeks.
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann says if Dempsey is physically ready, he'll play Friday, when the Americans look to secure their hold on the top spot in the group. Dempsey said his baseline testing Monday went well, and that the break from matches might actually prove to help him.
"Ready to get going. Excited," Dempsey said. "Feel like I've gotten a good rest because I have been going nonstop for a number of years now. It's been kind of nice to let my body heal up, because I was pretty beat up after last season."
The U.S. and Jamaica have 1-0-1 records in Group A qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Americans have never won a World Cup qualifier in Jamaica, adding plenty of emphasis to Friday.
"Any time you play World Cup qualifying games in another country, it's always going to be difficult," Dempsey said. "The fans are going to be really up for the game, so the players are going to be really up for the game and it's going to be a challenge."

Capture and map all your existing processes, both physical and technological, in an integrated document set, and youll be able to track performance, simplify workflow, and gradually optimize those processes for greater efficiency. Not only do you gain visibility to every aspect of your enterprise, but opportunities for improvement become readily apparent.
Which is virtually the same description as you have. However, in those days computers were worth many millions of dollars and took up one or more floors of the building. The BPM process was all done on paper and stored in folders for quick reference.
Once everything was fully documented the project team then had to see how the various forms and documents could be made a lot simpler by seeing what information could be dropped from them without any adverse effects. We also looked at what could be done to use the one document in multiple areas so information was only written down the once. Workflows were studied to see where they could be made more efficient and also where things might be dropped as no longer being required. For example, if a process required three forms and much of the information was the same and it was possible to merge them to one form and have each area just add to the form, then the section where the second and third form was initiated could be done away with as they were no longer needed, or reduced as they now only entered a fraction of the data.
At every stage of the BPM those involved at the work face were involved in discussions on how to improve the system. Changes were documented and implemented, and their effects as against their intended effects documented.
Once the whole system was checked, changed, and reviewed, it was allowed to settle down and then reviewed and adjusted as required. True BPM required constant attention and regular reviews for relevance and new changes due to changing operations or situations.
In each case where we used BPM the operations became much more effective and the staff happier as it reduced the paperwork required while increasing productivity. But, as I said, we did all this with paperwork and not computers.
I suspect the failure of automated BPM systems is not the concept of BPM but the mind set that an automated process will tell you where to make changes and what changes to make. The truth is every single work situation has its own unique aspects and what may work for company A in and industry will NOT work for company B in the same industry. Thus the BPM system needs to be managed and directed by a small team of knowledgeable staff appropriate to the company and the industry. So if anyone put in the software and expected it to tell them what to do to be successful, they were whistling in the wind and wasting their time and money. The only things an automated BPM can offer is a reduction of the paperwork to record the data, a uniform recording and presentation process, an ability to quickly enter changes, an ability to allow multiple user acces, and a good one should offer some sort of system modelling capability; but it still needs a smart person to use it and decide what needs to be done with the data in it.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Venezuela and indigenous groups are disputing whether an alleged massacre of Amazon villagers took place after Venezuela's government said it found no evidence of an attack.
A group representing the Yanomami tribe last week said that Brazilian gold miners had crossed the border and attacked a village from a helicopter. It said the assault could have killed more than 70 people.
Though the attack allegedly happened in July, the tribe was only able to alert the government recently because of the distance and isolation of their native region along the long, dense jungle border with Brazil.
Venezuelan officials said over the weekend that flyovers of the area led them to believe that the allegations were false.
"We can tell the country that we have seen no evidence of death," said Nicia Maldonado, Venezuela's minister of government affairs, in televised comments.
Native rights groups and some local politicians criticized the government, saying it reached that conclusion prematurely.
The remoteness of the region - and the nomadic habits of the Yanomami tribe - make it unlikely officials could have reached the exact spot where the attack was reported to have taken place, they said. Even natives, they point out, take days to move among settlements in the region.
In a collective statement, 11 tribes and rights groups including the Yanomami said, "It cannot be said that there isn't evidence" and pressed the government to continue investigating.
Liborio Guarulla, an indigenous Venezuelan and governor of Amazonas, the southern state where the attack is said to have happened, accused the government of "mobilizing resources just to silence the matter."
To some officials, the allegations of an assault by foreign aggressors, wielding guns and explosives from a helicopter, is difficult to believe. Not only would assailants need resources, know-how and familiarity with terrain not easily accessed from above, they would need knowledge of the habits and whereabouts of the Yanomami, who live in small groups and change settlements frequently.
"It would be extremely hard to do," said General Rafael Zambrano, commander of the Venezuelan army unit responsible for the region. Zambrano in a telephone interview said a small patrol of troops continues to inspect the area just in case.
YANOMAMI REQUEST UNUSUAL
People familiar with the Yanomami said their request for an investigation is unusual because tribal tradition frowns on discussions of the dead.
"It's a measure of how serious the problem is that they are making these allegations," said Marcos Wesley de Oliveira, coordinator of a regional program for indigenous people at the Instituto Socioambiental, a Brazilian advocacy group.
The tribe's native land on both sides of the border in recent decades has come under increasing pressure from wildcat gold miners and other outsiders.
Brazil's government last week said it asked Venezuela for more information about the alleged attack and whether Brazilians were involved. On Monday, Brazil's foreign ministry said it hasn't yet received any request from Venezuela for help investigating.
If an attack occurred, it remains unclear how many victims there may have been.
In the document they presented to Venezuelan authorities, the tribe said that only three members of the village are known to still be alive.
Those three, the document said, had been hunting when they heard the sound of a helicopter, gunfire, and explosions. The hunters, the document said, alerted Yanomami from another settlement, who went to the village and found charred bodies.
