Exclusive: Government's energy efficiency scheme is so ?complex? it deters homeowners from signing up

An ambitious Government scheme to improve the energy efficiency of millions of homes is so ?complex? it is likely to be discouraging the public from signing up, the head of the company funding the project has admitted.

In an interview with The Independent, Mark Bayley, the chief executive of the Green Deal Finance Company, revealed that he now only expects around 1,000 households to have energy saving measures installed under the plan in its first year. And he conceded that so far his company ? which has a start-up fund of ?244m to loan to households ? has processed applications worth just ?1.9m and signed off on only 12.

The Green Deal was launched by the Government in January with an aim of improving the energy efficiency of more than 14 million homes by 2020. But it has been plagued by a series of teething problems and lower than expected take-up. Of 71,000 Green Deal assessments completed, so far only 961 households have signed up for Green Deal financing. This offers loans of up to ?10,000 to fund energy efficiency measures paid back over 25 years through savings made on electricity bills.

In his first interview, Mr Bayley admitted that the complexity of financing the Green Deal could be putting off a lot of homeowners from taking part. This can involve a number of ?home visits?, multiple forms to fill in as well as delays in credit checking. ?There are still too many complexities facing the consumer,? he said.

?Often it takes several visits and the documentation can seemingly come at random. Some of the information is also not clear ? and is not moved from one document to another. Embarrassingly some people are saying that it takes around three weeks to do the Green Deal finance. What I?m not clear about is it why it takes us three weeks and Barclays can do a personal loan in a day.?

Mr Bayley said his company was working with the 20 firms now licenced to do assessments to improve the process and reduce the amount of time it take to get loans approved. ?We are trying to cut back on these complexities,? he said. ?We are looking to see if we can get to a Green Deal plan in a day.?

Mr Bayley denied that the cost of the borrowing ? which is just under 8 per cent a year ? was putting many householders off the scheme. He said it was lower than most personal and credit card loans ? and while more expensive than a mortgage, it did not include an arrangement fee.

?You cannot say people are not interested in saving money through energy-saving improvement at the same time as saying people are worried about electricity and energy prices.

?The average rate for credit card borrowing is 17.5 per cent and yet our APR is 7.9 per cent for a ?5,000 loan over 20 years.?

The Green Deal Finance Company is a not-for-profit mutual which has been supported by the Government to provide financing for the Green Deal Programme. Mr Bayley joined the company from the government-owned London & Continental Railways where he helped to deliver the high speed rail link from the Channel Tunnel to London.

He admitted that the on the face of it the take up of Green Deal finance did not look impressive but said he hoped it would significantly improve over time. ?There is good and bad. It is the case that 1,000 live plans compared to 71,000 assessments doesn?t appear on the face of it a great proportion.

?But there are reasons for that. Up to the end of the summer we only had three active companies and I don?t think it would be objectionable to say they were running it on a pilot basis. Now we have 19 good to go.?

Cost-cutting What are the benefits?

What is the Green Deal?

A Government programme that covers the upfront cost of energy efficiency improvements to your home. Households can get loans of up to ?10,000 to cover the cost of the work which is then paid back over 20 years through energy bills.

What improvements can be paid for?

There is a long and expanding list of things which are covered. These include replacing boilers, loft and wall insulation and double glazing.

Is it worth doing?

It is easy and relatively cheap, but if you can afford to do it yourself it would be cheaper to do so.

Where can I find out more?

Baseball Card Show Purchase #4 ? Frank Robinson 2001 Donruss ?All-Time Diamond Kings?

I know that Donruss peppered the Diamond Kings set into a lot of releases in the 2000?s. ?I just had no idea that they did so in 2001. ?Most of the DK cards that I have picked up for my player collections are from 2003, 2004, and 2005.

So, you can imagine my excitement to find another Diamond King set out there that features the legends of the game. ?And it was an added bonus to find this out by spotting a new Frank Robinson card.

The card is serial numbered as 2400/2500 and the tagline of the set is ?All-Time Diamond Kings?.

Have a look:

img145

?

?

Pretty nice, huh!?!?!

And with a name like ?All-Time Diamond Kings?, I am going to have to seek out the full checklist to see who else may be included. ?This card set me back just $1 so if there are other affordable cards in the set of the players I collect, I will try to affordably seek them out too.

Stay tuned for that?

Divers recover 38 more bodies, death toll hits 232

LAMPEDUSA, Italy (AP) ? Italian divers have recovered 38 more bodies from a smugglers' boat that capsized and sank to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea with hundreds of migrants on board.

Monday's discovery brought the confirmed death toll from last week's tragedy to 232 before the operation was suspended for the day at nightfall.

Only 155 of the estimated 500 people on board survived the sinking. Scores of bodies are believed to be still trapped in the hull of the 18-meter (59-foot) boat, which is resting 47 meters (154 feet) below the surface.

Monday was the first day that divers entered the hull. Coast Guard Capt. Filippo Marini estimated it would take two more days to complete the search and recovery mission.

How I Create: Q&A With Author & Consultant Todd Henry | World of ...

How I Create: Q&A With Author & Consultant Todd HenryI was excited to interview Todd Henry for this month?s ?How I Create? series, because he knows a lot about creativity.

Henry is the founder of Accidental Creative, a company that helps people and teams generate brilliant ideas.

He?s also penned two books on creativity: Die Empty: Unleash Your Best Work Every Day and?The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant At A Moment?s Notice.

In The Accidental Creative Henry gives readers practical strategies for supporting your creative process, especially when you need to produce bright ideas on a regular basis (and the muse is on vacation).

In his newest book, Die Empty, he gives readers the tools to do our best work on the projects that truly matter in all areas of our lives. As he writes in the book: ?The cost of inaction is vast. Don?t go to your grave with your best work inside of you. Choose to die empty.?

Below, Henry reveals his personal creative process and shares his advice for cultivating creativity.

Learn more about Henry at his website.

1. Do you incorporate creativity-boosting activities into your daily routine? If so, what activities do you do?

Yes ? I have a few that are critical. For several years I?ve made it a practice to get up early and spend the first hour of my day thinking, studying, and writing.

I just allow my curiosity to wander, and it?s been tremendously valuable in helping me think more systemically about my work and connect dots that might otherwise go unconnected.

Another is that I incorporate something I call ?unnecessary creating? into my weekly routine. This means making things that are not for clients or others, but just for myself.

Whether it?s writing, songwriting, or learning a new skill, I?ve found that applying unnecessary creating in my life has opened up new avenues of thought for my ?on-demand? creating.

2. What are your inspirations for your work?

I?m perpetually inspired by people I encounter who aspire to do brilliant work in their domain. I speak at a lot of conferences and events, and I get to hear the stories of people across various industries and roles talk about the problems they are experiencing and how they are trying to overcome them.

That?s what fuels me in a major way. I aspire to be something of an ?arms dealer? for these people and to help them be better positioned to unleash brilliant ideas and act on the work that matters to them.

3. There are many culprits that can crush creativity, such as distractions, self-doubt and fear of failure. What tends to stand in the way of your creativity?

For me it?s the weight of all that?s left undone. With every idea comes accountability for action. If there are too many ideas clogging up the queue, then it can create a kind of paralysis. This is definitely the case with many writers, artists, designers, and others who have more ideas than they can execute.

4. How do you overcome these obstacles?

I?ve come to learn that I need to focus on a limited number of projects at a time, and key in on the most important activities in each of those projects before moving on to something else.

Complete something, then dream. I may have a variety of projects going in my ?unnecessary creating? time, but with regard to the work I?m being paid for, I?ve found that pruning is absolutely essential.

The whitespace created through regular and relentless pruning of priorities becomes fertile ground for my best work.

It?s also critical to know when it?s time to quit something that?s demanding more time and energy than it?s worth. That?s another form of pruning.

5. What are some of your favorite resources on creativity?

A few that have been massively influential on me would be Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, and Lateral Thinking by Edward de Bono.

Also, I think it?s important to read the biographies of great artists, thinkers, and innovators.

Born Standing Up, the autobiography about Steve Martin?s days in stand-up comedy, is absolutely full of insights about finding your voice and taking strategic risks in the pursuit of innovation.

6. What is your favorite way to get your creative juices flowing?

I take long (90 minute) walks just about every day. It?s my way of disconnecting from the expectations of the world and thinking, processing my day, and considering problems. Since I started this practice my creative throughput has gone up markedly.

7. What?s your advice for readers on cultivating creativity?

Be intentional about your creative process. Establish practices that support your ability to generate ideas when you need to rather than expecting creativity to happen in the cracks and crevices of your life.

Establish focus areas by defining your problems effectively, cultivate stimulating relationships that help you stay fresh and engaged, manage your energy by pruning your focus areas and projects, fill your mind with valuable and challenging stimuli, and utilize your hours for effectiveness, not just efficiency.

If you do these things consistently, you will be in a far better place to generate brilliant ideas when you need them most.

Original Apple iPhone unveiling could have been a disaster

On this date two years ago, the world lost a forward thinking visionary when Steve Jobs succumbed to pancreatic cancer. In Saturday's New York Times, there are some excerpts from an upcoming book entitled Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution that go inside the first launch of the Apple iPhone. For example, the software in the Wi-Fi radio packed into the unit that Steve Jobs would introduce to the world, was unstable. As a result, wires had to be run off stage and connected to the phone's antennas so that the signal would not have to travel so far.

Even though AT&T had brought in a portable cell tower for the event, Steve Jobs had the iPhone that he would use in the unveiling, programmed to always show 5 bars of signal strength regardless of what the true reading was. Andy Grignon, the senior engineer responsible for the radios in the phone, was so nervous about the event that he packed on 50 pounds in the weeks before the launch. "If the radio crashed and restarted, as we suspected it might, we didn?t want people in the audience to see that, so we just hard-coded it to always show five bars," Grignon recalled.

But the biggest worry was that the demo iPhone would crash while Jobs was multitasking on stage. In case the unit he was working with ran out of memory, Apple's CEO had a few other units with him on stage that he could instantly switch to. The phones had just 128MB of memory and were prone to crashing. It seems hard to believe now, but one of the greatest consumer products ever launched was far from complete on that January day in 2007 when it was unveiled. Not one unit ever came off an assembly line, and the 100 or so units built before the introduction of the device had plenty of faults. The software was buggy and the device couldn't even finish playing one song or video without crashing. Send an email and browse the internet and the phone would work. Reverse the order and it would crash. The challenge for Steve Jobs was to show a smooth running phone at the unveiling, make the public drool now, and hammer out the bugs over the 6 months before the phone was actually launched.

Jobs had to be feeling nervous. If you view a video of his introduction of the Motorola E790 iTunes phone (aka ROKR E1), a glitch during the presentation made Jobs look lost and you could see him getting annoyed on stage. Ironically, Apple almost purchased Motorola in 2003, but at the time it was considered a company too big for Apple to swallow. Even more ironically, Google bought out the handset maker eight years after Apple failed to do so.

Things fell into place as Apple worked on the software that became iOS. Multitouch, which by 2003 could be used on a tablet like prototype, was introduced to the public with the new touchscreen phone. Despite this, the first prototype was similar to an iPod with a click wheel for dialing. Another prototype looked more like the device we know as the first-gen iPhone. But constructed of brushed aluminum, the radio signals could not escape the inside of the phone.

Security was tight. Apple didn't even tell the companies whose parts were driving the phone what it was building. Companies like Marvell, which produced the Wi-Fi chip, thought that its part was going into a new iPod. Phony schematics were drawn up to throw people off the scent. Amid some rumors about an Apple manufactured handset, the Apple iPhone was finally introduced on January 9th, 2007 and the world was changed. Not that the engineers who worked on the project realized what they had unleashed on the world. Fortified from a flask smuggled in during the event, they were all feeling no pain.

Dr. Stephen Brookfield Named First John Ireland Endowed Chair ...

Dr. Stephen Brookfield, St. Thomas? Distinguished University Professor since 1992, has been named the first John Ireland Endowed Chair.

The chair?is funded by the Office of Academic Affairs and?is designed to remain in the College of Education, Leadership and Counseling. It is awarded to a person who has achieved a worldwide reputation for academic excellence and scholarly contributions in a particular field.

Father Dennis Dease, former president of the university, and Susan Huber, executive vice president and provost, had several conversation over the years about CELC?s desire to establish an endowed chair.

?Dr. Brookfield was selected as the first John Ireland chair for CELC because he fit the criteria to a T. He is an internationally recognized scholar who has an extensive and enviable list of both publications and presentations. He is a remarkable teacher who allows his pedagogy to inform his research and comes full circle by having his published research, in turn, inform his teaching,? Huber commented. ?He also provides universitywide service through Faculty Development to assist faculty members in improving their teaching and writing and assists junior faculty, in particular, in getting their work published.?

Brookfield has held the chair since Sept. 1.

Dr. Stephen Brookfield

Dr. Stephen Brookfield

?As the John Ireland Endowed Chair I attempt to create a high profile on an international stage for the university through my writing and speaking. Within the university I take responsibility for mentoring faculty in their scholarship and research through workshops on scholarly publishing as well as numerous individual consultations. I also work to encourage faculty across the university to move to a learner-centered approach to their teaching, and to model a cross-unit, interdisciplinary contribution to the scholarly life of the community,? Brookfield notes in his curriculum vitae.Brookfield holds three degrees and two postgraduate diplomas from universities in the United Kingdom: Bachelor of Arts in Modern Studies, Coventry University, 1970; Master of Arts in Theoretical Sociology, University of Reading, 1974; and Doctor of Philosophy in Adult Education, University of Leicester, 1980. In addition, he holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Modern Social and Cultural Studies, University of London, 1971, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Education, University of Nottingham, 1977.

He also holds three honorary doctoral degrees: the University System of New Hampshire for ?Contributions to the Understanding of Adult Learning and Educational Practice,? 1991; Concordia University (St. Paul) for ?Contributions in Shaping Adult Educational Practice,? 2003; and Muhlenberg College (Allentown, Pa.) for ?Educational Leadership in the Scholarship of Teaching,? 2010.

Here, there and everywhere

Brookfield was born in Liverpool, England, in 1949. ?My mom moved us south to Oxfordshire when I was about 14, and she was determined that her kids would grow up without a Liverpool accent,? Brookfield said in a recent interview, speaking in a softer, easier-to-understand accent than that of Liverpool?s other most-famous citizens ? John, Paul, George and Ringo. (Brookfield plays in a punk-surf band ? The 99ers ? but its playlist does not include anything by Lennon and McCartney.)

Brookfield came to the United States in 1982 to take a temporary professorship at Columbia University in New York City.

?I was offered a really great position in ?82 in England, a very senior position, and I thought that if I take this position the rest of my career is settled and mapped out. At the same time, from out of the blue, I was offered a temporary position in New York ? at a much less exalted status. I just got more excited thinking about working in New York for a couple of years,? Brookfield said. ?So I took it just thinking it would be a working holiday, and then I just really liked living in New York. And then I met my wife and we started a family. She?s from Minnesota.?

The ?temporary position? lasted 10 years.

Distinguished University Professor

With his children coming of school age, the family decided to move to Minnesota, and Brookfield began to teach at St. Thomas. ?Here I am, 21 years later. I?m not going anywhere, either,? Brookfield said with a laugh. He teaches graduate students evenings and weekends in the College of Education, Leadership and Counseling.

In January 1992 Brookfield was named Distinguished University Professor. ?The Distinguished University Professor role is one which you?re sort of on call to any school in the university to help them improve teaching. ? And so the role was sort of a universitywide resource, and then also the idea was that the Distinguished University Professor would publish in such a way as to bring attention and prestige to the university,? he explained.

Brookfield?s curriculum vitae lists numerous fellowships and visiting professorships, 16 written, co-written or edited books (a 17th is scheduled for publication in early 2014), and 30 additional pages of book chapters and published papers, monographs and commissioned papers, articles in refereed journals, book forwards, book reviews, keynote speeches and selected consulting activities.

In addition, six times he has won the prestigious Cyril O. Houle World Award for Literature in Adult Education, awarded by the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education. In 2009 he was inducted into the International Adult Education Hall of Fame.

In 2008, St. Thomas presented him with the John Ireland Presidential Award for Outstanding Achievement as a Teacher/Scholar, and the Diversity Leadership Teaching and Research Award.

Across the universe of learning

Brookfield?s 16 books deal with various aspects of teaching or learning. Most are written for teachers to help them improve their teaching. But he is venturing into new territory with his 17th book ? Engaging Imagination: Helping Students Become Creative and Reflective Thinkers. He is writing the book with a woman from the London College of Fashion in England, ?which is a complete departure for me to write with someone from the field of fashion.?

?I?ve been exposed to lots of different ideas about using visual methods,? Brookfield remarked about the experience. ?I?m a very word-based teacher and thinker. Even my PowerPoints tend to be lists of words. ? And so I?ve been really challenged to convey ideas graphically and visually and diagrammatically, and to think about different ways that students could demonstrate learning which are alternative to the usual heavily text- or word-dependent methods like essays.?

Still learning? His reply is yes, whether it?s in the fashion world or in the classroom. ?Are you kidding?? he answered, laughing. ?I?m still learning ? still learning about teaching and how to be a good teacher, still making what I feel are rookie mistakes. So one of my big interests over the years has been to experiment in different ways of finding out how students are experiencing learning, and then to base what you do as a teacher on the information that you are getting about students? experiences week in and week out, and knowing when to change things, knowing when you?re roughly on the right track, and whether you?ve got the balance right between different methods.?

As the John Ireland Endowed Chair, Brookfield is available to help others in the university community to keep learning right along with him on that long and winding road of learning to teach.

Designer Marc Jacobs walks the runway at the end of the Louis Vuitton show at the Paris Fashion Week on October 2, 2013. Sources say he is leaving Louis Vuitton to focus on floating his own label.

Marc Jacobs, the star American designer who turned Louis Vuitton from a staid luggage-maker into one of the world's biggest luxury brands, is leaving to focus on floating his own label, a source close to the French company's parent LVMH said on Wednesday.?

The move follows a series of leadership changes at Louis Vuitton, LVMH's biggest profit- and revenue-contributor, aimed at helping the brand regain some of its lost prestige after a decline in sales growth over the past year.?

"Marc Jacobs is leaving Vuitton and will focus on his own brand," the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.?

LVMH and Marc Jacobs declined to comment, but the designer once said in an interview on the Louis Vuitton website, for which he wore a dark kilt and two ear studs: "Change is a great and horrible thing. People love it and hate it at the same time. Without change you just don't move."?

The source said Jacobs aims to float his business - which is estimated to generate sales of around 500 million euros - in an initial public offering.?

"There is an IPO project for the MJ brand," the source said.?

Some industry observers have suggested Jacobs has been encouraged by the success of Michael Kors, the U.S. brand whose shares and sales have been enjoying stellar growth since its IPO late last year.?

LVMH owns nearly all of Marc Jacobs International, the operating company, while the trademark ownership is split equally between LVMH, Jacobs and Jacobs' partner Robert Duffy.?

"Marc Jacobs' departure is not a big surprise," said analyst Antoine Belge at HSBC. "But if the IPO is confirmed, LVMH will lose one of its fastest growing brands."?

Jacobs' departure after 16 years with the company comes a month after LVMH founder and chief executive Bernard Arnault appointed his daughter Delphine as deputy head of Louis Vuitton and replaced longstanding chief Yves Carcelle with group veteran Michael Burke.?

Louis Vuitton, which built its name and profitability on its LV-embossed canvas bags, has been suffering from cooling demand in Asia and consumers' growing preference for no-logo products. Over the past year, the brand has put brakes on its expansion to preserve its exclusivity in response to fears it was becoming too ubiquitous, which contributed to its sales growth halving to around 5 percent.?

Last month, it hired accessories designer Darren Spaziani, formerly with Proenza Schouler, to strengthen its high-end offering of leather bags.?

Nicolas Ghesquiere, a darling of fashion editors, who left Balenciaga last year after having successfully revamped the Kering fashion brand, is seen as a front-runner to replace Jacobs.?

Jacobs, whose theatrical fashion shows contributed to heightening the brand's profile, introduced collaborations with artists such as Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse and recently rapper Kanye West to help make the brand more appealing.?

Jacobs, 50, presented his last collection for Louis Vuitton on Wednesday, an all-black swan song that incorporated elements from his past shows such as the train station he once created and the slow-turning white carousel carrying models, including Kate Moss, of two years ago.?

Today, the Marc Jacobs brand and particularly its more accessible line Marc by Marc Jacobs, are among the most profitable fashion subsidiaries within LVMH, enjoying strong demand in the United States and Japan.?

Marc Jacobs also launched a cosmetics line in August in the United States, with distribution handled by Sephora, LVMH's beauty products retail chain.?

At the age of 24, Jacobs was the youngest designer to receive the New Fashion Talent award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. After graduating from the Parsons New School of Design, he worked for Perry Ellis and created his own label in 1984 with Duffy.?

Analysis: U.S. default seems unthinkable but investors have options

By Steven C. Johnson and Jennifer Ablan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investors who behave conventionally are likely to get burned if the political standoff over the federal budget and the debt ceiling ends up forcing the United States to default.

But portfolio managers and strategists say that if investors put their trading hats on, they may be able to protect themselves and even possibly come out ahead.

"The next two weeks could cause a lot of pain in many portfolios," said Mark Yusko, CEO and chief investment officer at Morgan Creek Capital Management, LLC, in New York.

One of the few things pros like Yusko agree on when it comes to the partial U.S. government shutdown that began this week and the possible failure to raise the government's legal borrowing limit by October 17 is that market turbulence is likely to rise.

U.S. stocks retreated for a second straight day on Thursday as the shutdown dragged on and the dollar weakened broadly. While the selling has been orderly so far, investors see anxiety rising if the weekend arrives without any sign of a political deal.

One way to take advantage of that, portfolio managers say, is to simply bet on more volatile trading rather than try to navigate the ups and downs of the stock or bond markets.

The CBOE Volatility Index, the world's best-known fear gauge, hovered around 17 on Thursday, roughly a two-month high but still a far cry from 48, where it peaked in 2011, the last time Congress threatened not to raise the debt ceiling.

"Even a legitimate threat of a default will send volatility exploding - even to the 30s," Yusko said. "You can make a lot of money in a short period of time."

Yusko said investors can get exposure via the unleveraged iPath S&P 500 VIX, also known as the VXX, or the leveraged VelocityShares 2x VIX, or the TVIX.

For those who think it could approach 2011 levels again, snapping up a buy option now looks like a bargain and could be a nice way to hedge against losses elsewhere.

The same goes for buying options to sell the S&P 500 index, said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG.

"The environments are certainly different, but given the similarities on the legislative side of things, we wonder why volatility hasn't already begun moving higher," he said.

Douglas Peebles, chief investment officer for fixed income at Alliance Bernstein, added: "Don't short volatility. Because all roads lead to it. There is going to be less liquidity and more question marks about gridlock and growth. That's painful to sit through, but it's fertile ground" for increasing returns.

For longer-term mom-and-pop investors whose exposure to markets is concentrated in their 401ks, increasing cash holdings could offer some protection, particularly for older savers heavily invested in typical stock and bond funds.

SITTING ON CASH

Dan Yu, managing director of EisnerAmper Wealth Advisors LLC, said his clients' portfolios are sitting on cash of between 10 to 12 percent, up from 2 to 3 percent in July. "We're cash-heavy but I might be a buyer if we see a 5 percent pullback in the stock market," Yu said.

After the 2011 debt ceiling fight ended with Standard & Poor's stripping the United States of its AAA credit rating, the benchmark S&P 500 index had one of the most volatile years in the market's history, logging the first zero percent performance in decades.

But as the credit crunch in 2008 taught investors, even cash isn't safe when panic and forced selling ensue.

That's because many money market funds invest in short-term cash equivalents such as T-bills, which in this case could be most at risk if the U.S. government goes into technical default.

Reserve Money Market Fund shares fell below $1 in 2008 when it was forced to write off debt issued by Lehman Brothers, whose failure marked the depth of the global financial crisis.

Investors have been avoiding Treasury bills that come due in mid-to-late October and early November, which have the highest risk of a default.

That has pushed one-month Treasury bill yields above those offered on longer-dated Treasuries. One-month yields rose to 0.13 percent on Thursday, the highest since November, and well above the 0.02 percent three-month yield.

Most investors expect longer-dated U.S. Treasuries to hold up fairly well in the leadup to the debt ceiling showdown, and perhaps to rally even in the event of a default. That's what happened in 2011 when the U.S. credit rating was downgraded.

That is partly because few markets offer the size and liquidity of the U.S. government bond market. And it is partly because few expect a default to last long.

"Missing a single payment or a series of social security payments is incredibly damaging, of course, but that's still very different from Argentina informing the world, as it did a few years ago, that it's defaulting on its debt," said Andrew Milligan, head of global strategy at Standard Life Investments.

"What it does, though, is that it slowly undermines the status of the U.S. dollar. If there was a period of time, even a day, when someone can't transact what he wanted to transact, that memory will last a long time. That's when you start to see people trying to make sure that they are diversified," he said.

Beneficiaries are likely to be government debt from advanced economies such as Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the UK.

Analysts at Societe Generale have advised clients that a U.S. debt default was improbable, but a rise in market fears that such a catastrophe could happen would in itself be a risk to hedge against.

Societe Generale analyst Eamon Aghdasi recommends investors buy volatility through options or other structures in the Brazilian real or Mexican peso.

Another hedge would be through Chile's rates markets, involving receiving swaps to protect against stress in debt markets, Aghdasi said in a note to clients.

Dan Fuss, who helps manage $190 billion in assets as vice chairman of Loomis Sayles, said he is hanging onto his longer-dated U.S. Treasuries.

Nonetheless, he's spent the past few days inundated with calls and emails from clients, particularly those from outside the United States.

"There's a very real concern about the U.S. and its weakening position in the world," he said.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An Iraqi sheik cradled his grandson's tightly wrapped body Tuesday, his face grim and his eyes downcast, trailed by men bearing the coffin of the infant's mother.

The mother and son were killed the day before by a bombing in Baghdad ? two among nearly 1,000 Iraqi lives lost to violence in September. The heartbreaking image, captured in an Associated Press photo, illuminates the human tragedy behind the numbers.

Sectarian bloodshed has surged to levels not seen in Iraq since 2008. More than 5,000 people have been killed since April, when a deadly government raid on a Sunni protest camp unleashed a new round of violence that showed al-Qaida in Iraq is still strong despite years of U.S.-Iraqi offensives against the terror group.

At least 979 people ? 887 civilians and 92 soldiers and national policemen ? were killed in September, a 22 percent increase from the previous month, the U.N. mission in Iraq said Tuesday. Baghdad was hit hardest, with 418 violent deaths. The U.N. also reported that 2,133 people were wounded nationwide in the relentless car bombings, suicide attacks and shootings.

The spike reversed a brief decline to 804 in August after the death toll reached 1,057 in July, the highest since June 2008 when 975 people were killed.

By comparison, 3,718 civilians were killed in December 2006, the deadliest month of the war, according to a U.S. military tally.

An influx of U.S. troops, a Shiite militia cease-fire and a Sunni revolt against the extremists among them combined to stop the country's slide toward civil war in 2008.

While violence has never stopped in Iraq, the recent uptick in double-digit daily death tolls has stunned many Iraqis after several years of relative calm. It also has raised fears that long-dormant Shiite militias could renew their campaign of retaliatory violence.

"If the security forces are not capable of protecting us, we will protect ourselves and end the misery," said Hatem Muhsin, who lives in Sadr City, a Shiite enclave in Baghdad. "The sectarian war has just started."

Al-Qaida in Iraq has claimed responsibility for much of the violence, including a string of car bombings that targeted mostly Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad on Monday, killing 55 people.

Sheik Mahmoud Abdel Rahman's 11-month-old grandson, Latif, and the child's mother, Hasnah Abdel Rasul, were among them. The infant was wrapped in a shroud with verses from the Quran as Abdel Rahman carried it in a procession to bury his two loved ones in the Shiite holy city of Najaf.

The al-Qaida umbrella group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant said Monday's attacks were in retaliation for the "arrests, torturing and targeting of Sunnis" by the Shiite-led government. It vowed more attacks.

The statement's authenticity could not be independently confirmed but it was posted on a website commonly used by militants and its style was consistent with earlier statements by the terror network.

Anger among Iraq's minority Muslim sect stems largely from allegations of abuses and vague anti-terrorism laws that allow random arrests at the hands of the Shiite-led government, which gained power after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime. Tensions rose sharply this year after the April raid, which followed months of largely peaceful Sunni protests.

Police and hospital officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information, also reported six more people killed in attacks on Tuesday.

The rising violence has dealt a blow to U.S. hopes of leaving behind a stable country after the American military withdrew in December 2011. More than 4,500 U.S. troops died in the war and billions of dollars were spent.

The developments came as the U.S. government shutdown threatened a measure to provide relief for Iraqis who risked their lives to help the United States.

The special visa has allowed more than 12,000 Iraqi contractors, interpreters and others who aided U.S. efforts, and family members, to move to the United States since 2007. It expired at midnight, with an estimated 2,000 applications still in the bureaucratic process, but the Senate extended it by unanimous consent a half-hour ahead of Monday night's deadline.

The House had called for its extension in a temporary spending bill and could now take it up separately.

"These brave Iraqis risked their lives to protect Americans and many of them are now living under constant threat of retribution from al-Qaida terrorists and Iranian-backed militants as a result of their decision to help American men and women in uniform," Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said in a joint statement Tuesday. "The United States has a moral obligation to stand with those Iraqis who stood with us. We cannot, and we will not, abandon our Iraqi partners."

Is customer service experience your top priority? | Powersports ...

By John Tschohl, Founder and President, Service Quality Institute
October 1, 2013

John-TschohlMost companies think they provide great customer service. However, a recent survey conducted by Echo Research for American Express found there is still room for much improvement for most companies when it comes to providing great customer service.

The survey, which was conducted in the U.S. and ten other countries, found that:

- 1 out of 3 (32%) customers feel businesses are paying less attention to customer service these days.
- 1 in 3 feel companies are not meeting their expectations (31%) for good customer service.
- Even more striking was the fact that 9 out of 10 (93%) say that companies are failing to exceed their customer service expectations.

Which means most companies are just doing enough to get by when it comes to providing good customer service.

The top gripes that consumers have when it comes to customer service focus primarily around their negative interactions with a company?s representatives:

A third (33%) cite rude or unresponsive customer service representatives as the most likely reason why they might switch from one brand or company to another.

One out of four (26%) say being shuffled back and forth from one representative to another is what would make them switch.

Consumers are telling more people about their customer service experiences than ever before. On average someone will tell 15 people about their good experiences and 24 people about their bad experiences. Bad experiences are talked about (56%) more than good experiences (48%), proving the old adage that consumers are much more likely to share a bad customer experience than a good one.

Bring in the fact that social media makes it easier than ever to share your experiences with people than ever before, and companies better start paying attention. What people have to say about your company is now part of what your marketing team has to deal with as they work to generate demand and maintain the company?s brand image.

If these statistics don?t get you to start thinking more about the importance of making customer service a top priority at your company, here are a few more that should:

Two thirds of consumers (66%) said they are willing to spend more with a company they believe provides good customer service.

Over half (55%) say they have passed up a business transaction in the past year due to a poor customer service experience.

It?s time to wake up! Making customer service a priority not only leads to happier customers, but also is something you can turn into a competitive advantage for your company and increase profits.

Despite the increased ways of handling customer service through email, website chat rooms, social media and other forms technology, great customer service still comes down to having motivated people who deliver it and are able to form good relationships with your customers.

Making customer service a priority at your company takes commitment, along with developing a plan to get there. Other steps you need to pay attention to when making customer service a priority for your business include:

  • No matter what business you are in, be it insurance, banking or selling cars, you must understand you are first in the customer service business.
  • Identify what is working and what is not working with your current customer service practices. Eliminate any rules or policies that are upsetting your customers. Having great people enforcing bad rules is not a good solution.
  • Gather as much information from your customers on their needs and what you must do to meet them.
  • Use other companies that provide great customer service as role models. Organizations such as Dell, Delta, Marriott, or the Mayo Clinic are a few of the ones I admire.
  • Provide a guarantee to your customers that they will receive certain services within a given time.
  • Always be tracking your progress through surveys or focus groups, as well as looking at sales figures, to determine how you are doing.
  • Hire the right people. If you want your employees to treat your customers well, you need to hire people with the right attitude who love helping customers. As all the training in the world can?t fix a bad attitude.
  • Be 10 times faster than your competition. Amazon built a company around speed.

Perhaps the most important item to consider is to provide your employees with continuous training (at least every 4 months) as well as incentives for high-performance. Listen to your employees on ways to improve and empower them to make decisions in favor of the customer.

Creating a customer service culture takes time. If you are not committed to it, you will ultimately fail to provide your customers with effective customer service. This will not only lead to more unhappy customers, but also eventually impact your bottom line.

John Tschohl, the internationally recognized service strategist, is founder and president of the Service Quality Institute in Minneapolis. Described by USA Today, Time, and Entrepreneur as a ?customer service guru,? he has written several books on customer service and has developed more than 26 customer-service training programs that have been distributed throughout the world. John?s monthly strategic newsletter is available online at www.customer-service.com.

A final session of Walter White's 'Bad' behavior

NEW YORK (AP) ? Any "Breaking Bad " fan could be forgiven for concluding that Sunday's finale held no major surprises.

That's because this AMC drama series has delivered surprises, shock and OMG moments dependably since its premiere five seasons ago.

Just like it did on its final episode.

For those who don't want to be reading how yet, stop reading! And let's take a few moments for you who aren't ready to find out what happened to tear your eyes away from this article.

OK. Ready?

The finale closed the loop on a scene that began Season 5, and found Walt (series star Bryan Cranston) with a beard and a full head of hair at an Albuquerque, N.M., Denny's restaurant. There he made a swap for a different car than the Volvo he had stolen and driven cross-country from New Hampshire, where, until the final moments of last week's episode, he was holed up, a most-wanted fugitive from the law. More to the point, Walt in that deal at the Denny's men's room became the owner of a very serious rifle.

The scene, flashing forward several months ahead to Walt's 52nd birthday, was no less tantalizing than bewildering to viewers when it aired. On the finale, it revealed itself as a key piece of the series' finished puzzle.

As the finale began, Walt ? cancer-stricken and a hunted man ? was headed back home to Albuquerque for a last showdown.

In a byzantine and sinister arrangement with the couple who had become tycoons from a pharmaceutical company Walt co-founded but received no benefit from, Walt made sure his children would get the $10 million drug money he left behind with the couple ? or else.

Walt then dropped in on his estranged wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), who had made it plain she hated him.

"Why are you here?" she asked him coldly.

"It's over," he said, "and I needed a proper goodbye."

After all this time, he justified out loud his descent from life as a meek, ill-paid chemistry teacher to a life as a legendary drug lord. Before, he had always insisted he did it for his family, to leave them provided for after his death from his terminal cancer.

"I did it for me," he declared to Skyler. "I liked it. I was good at it. And I was alive."

Walt's former meth-cooking sidekick, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), was still enslaved to a group of bad guys forcing him to cook crystal-meth for them using the laboratory-pristine process Walt had pioneered and prospered with. Walt rescued Jesse: His assault rifle mowed down the bad guys by remote control from the trunk of his car.

Freed, Jesse was last seen speeding off, screaming in hysteria, rage and gratitude. Against all odds, he had lived to face another day.

For Walt, the outcome was much different. As the cops descended at the scene of the mass slaughter to seize him, he was lying on the floor, dead, apparently from a stray bullet from his own rifle. An inadvertent suicide, he had successfully escaped from the law, his foes and the cancer that was stalking him.

And, yes, Walt used the ricin he had held in reserve for ages. He poisoned Lydia Rodarte-Quayle, who had shown the bad judgment to collude with Walt's enemies on more than one occasion. He substituted it for the sweetener she thought she was putting in her tea.

The episode, and series, ended with Badfinger's "Baby Blue" ("Guess I got what I deserve").

So did viewers, with a finale that was surprising in its relative lack of carnage, that tied up loose ends and seemed organically fitting, however outlandish at times ("Breaking Bad" never insisted on stark realism).

Written and directed by Vince Gilligan, the series' creator, this series went out as it came in, and stayed: wicked, twisted and wildly creative. Certified with its conclusion as perhaps the best TV drama series of all time, "Breaking Bad" remained as pure a product as the crystal meth Walt White cooked, to his peril and demise.

Canada's Harvest Drilling Finds 5.9M Barrels Oil Reserves - KNOC

SEOUL, Sept 29 (Reuters) ? State-run Korea National Oil Corp (KNOC) said on Sunday its loss-making subsidiary Harvest Operations had found at least 5.9 million barrels of crude oil in a Canadian well where it began drilling earlier this month.

The oil well, now worth $470 million, is in the northwestern Canadian mining area of Royce, KNOC said in a statement. KNOC fully owns Harvest Operations.

The well is producing the equivalent of 800 barrels per day of combined oil and gas, the statement said. Another 30 or 40 drilling sites could be developed, the statement said.

That included Harvest-owned sites in the Deep Basin and Loon regions, the statement said.

KNOC also plans to invest heavily in shale gas in the Muskwa region, together with oil sand in the Black Gold mine as part of Harvest's non-conventional crude oil sector.

Last week, the state-run oil company announced it was considering whether to sell "non-core parts" of Harvest.

KNOC bought the Canadian oil and gas trust for $1.7 billion in 2009. Harvest reported a net loss of C$720 million in 2012.

Harvest's upstream sector recorded operating profits of C$3 million ($2.91 million) last year, despite production failures caused by natural disasters.

Ensure that individual projects work together for a home that looks ...

Prioritize certain improvements. You know that there are several areas of your home that need changes, but you don?t want to do all the projects at once. So where should you begin? Use your master plan to determine the possibilities and assess your priorities.

Often a master plan can help you estimate prices for different project areas in your home; that way you can proceed based on your budget at the time. Maybe you need to tackle the kitchen first, and the master bedroom will have to wait. Either way, keeping the big picture in mind means that everything will work together in the end.

Here's who might not be happy about Netflix's 'Super HD' video ...

Hey, what?s that up in the vividly detailed sky displayed on your enormous HDTV?s screen? Look! It?s an incredibly crisp-looking bird ? it?s a vibrantly colorful plane ? no, it?s Netflix?s Super HD video streaming!

Yes, that?s right folks, Netflix announced today that all of its 30 million domestic subscribers will now be able to access movies and TV shows in the Super HD 1080p video format. Super HD, which is the highest quality video format offered by Netflix, is likely called ?Super HD? because it?s far more memorably to nontech people (like my mom) who only understand that the movie they?re watching isn?t as detailed and crisp as it could be.

It?s worth noting that not every video in Netflix?s library is available in the Super HD format, such as campy ?80s teenage rom-com films, Good Burger, and other awesomely bad films and TV series originally produced more than a decade ago.

Super HD, which launched back in January, was only available to Netflix members that were using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that agreed to join the company?s Open Connect Network. The Open Connect Network is a really good thing for ISPs, too. It essentially helps ISPs minimize the massive strain Netflix puts on their overall network (thus speeding up the entire connection for everyone) and saves them money by reducing their reliance on third-party distribution services like Level 3. It also doesn?t cost ISPs anything ? making it a bigger risk not to use the Open Connect Network.

Still, that didn?t stop some major ISPs from declining.

Time Warner Cable was among those that decided not to join Netflix?s Open Connect, thus denying all their customers access to the best quality video streams when watching movies and TV shows.

TWC?s explanation for not joining was that it doesn?t need Netflix?s help because its technology for managing Internet traffic was more than capable of handling the strain of Super HD streaming ? despite Netflix accounting for over a third of all downstream web traffic in the country at peak usage times. (TWC then made the wild accusation that Netflix was holding their customers hostage by denying them the Super HD streaming due to the ISP?s disagreement. It also suggested that Netflix was trying to make themselves an exception to Net Neutrality by asking for special treatment, which is not at all true.)

But as of today?s member-wide Super HD roll out, there are now zero ?hostages? ? thank the gods.

Netflix, however, did point out that members using an ISP that still hadn?t joined the Open Connect won?t be able to get the optimum experience when accessing Super HD-quality videos.

And if you decipher that forced-smile-of-a-statement, it basically means ISPs like TWC could be slower overall during peak Internet usage times now that Super HD is enabled for everyone. Also, it means the likelihood of maintaining a Super HD-quality video stream on ISPs like TWC will be much lower. Fortunately, Netflix?s technology automatically adjusts to lower quality video formats based on the Internet connection (aka adaptive streaming), so you shouldn?t have to deal with videos stopping to buffer constantly.
