Ford Focus on track to beat Corolla as world's best-selling car

Ford Motor says its Focus small car is on track to become the best-selling car in the world this year, trumping the Toyota Corolla.

Ford sold 489,616 Focus sedans and hatchbacks worldwide in the first half of 2012. That was almost 27,000 more than the perennial best-seller, the Toyota Corolla.

Ford made the announcement at its assembly plant in Rayong, which opened in May to build the Focus. The Thailand plant, which is one of Ford's most advanced, has the capacity to produce 150,000 cars per year for sale in Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and other countries in the region.

Ford's recently revamped Focus is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. It's a strong seller in the U.S., where Focus sales were up 31 percent in the first half of the year compared with 2011. But the Corolla is still king in the U.S., where it outsold the Focus by nearly 27,500 in the first half of the year.

The Corolla could still top the Focus worldwide, too. Last year at this time the Focus was ahead of the Corolla, but the Corolla pulled through in the end, outselling the Focus by more than 259,000 vehicles.

At the plant Friday, Ford executives were also celebrating the production of the 350 millionth vehicle Ford has made since its founding 109 years ago.

Men survive 100-foot cliff plunge in Maui

Two occupants of a car navigating dangerous roads in Hawaii escaped nearly unharmed after they plunged off a 100-foot cliff on Maui, Hawaii.

According to local news reports, the tourists were driving near Makamakaole Gulch on Kahekili Highway early Tuesday morning when their car veered off the highway and over the cliff. According to the Maui News, the car plummeted off the cliff around 2:30 a.m.

One man, a visitor from South Carolina, escaped from the crashed car and hiked up the cliff for an hour before finding help from a resident around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the report. The pair then called emergency services for aide.

Fire and rescue crews then helped evacuate the second man, from California, from the vehicle. ?Both men were treated and released from a local hospital for minor injuries. The men have not yet been identified.

Calls to Maui Fire Services were not immediately returned.

Apple-Samsung verdict: Nothing to change in India

Samsung India has told TOI that the verdict in the US would have no effect on the company?s business in India.

NEW DELHI: The shock of landmark jury ruling, which found Samsung guilty of infringing on several Apple patents and asked it to pay nearly $1.05 billion in damages, is finally subsiding. Samsung India on Friday told TOI that the verdict in the US would have no effect on the company's business in India.

Ranjit Yadav, country head for Samsung mobile & IT, said that the company would neither slow down roll out of Samsung products here nor cut any features from its phones.

"The ruling does not impact Samsung Smartphone and tablet sales in India. We will continue to strengthen our leadership in these segments in India based on our innovative new launches and give consumers more choice," he said.

Patrick Moorhead, president of technology consultancy firm Moor Insights & Strategy, said that in the short run it may affect Android phone makers and may benefit Apple. "The ruling gives Apple a temporary leg up, but it won't last for long given Samsung and other Android vendors have been considering a potential negative ruling," he said. "I also don't think that the verdict in its entirety will stand up to an appeal."

Samsung as well as other phone vendors have made conscious efforts to steer clear of Apple's design and utility patents. After launching Galaxy S, which had a strikingly similar design compared to iPhone 3GS, and getting in trouble over it, Samsung has tried to use non-uniform rounded edges in its phones. Also, Google, which makes the Android operating software that powers smartphones made by companies like Samsung, Motorola and HTC, has tried not to use the software features like "rubber bend effect" on which Apple had obtained patent.

"None of Apple's software patents are difficult to work around except for pinch and zoom. And I do not think the hardware patents will stand the scrutiny in higher courts," said Moorhead. Samsung had already announced it would appeal against the ruling made by the nine-member jury in a San Jose court.

Google, has meanwhile, scrambled to reassure its flock. In a carefully-worded statement after the verdict it has said that most of the infringement found by the court doesn't relate to the core Android features.

"The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office," it has said in a statement. "The mobile industry is moving fast and all players ? including newcomers ? are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that."

Apple and Samsung are fighting a global battle for domination in the smartphone industry. According to IDC data, in Q2, 2012 Samsung had a share of 21.6% compared to Apple's 6.9% in the global smartphone market. More tellingly, Horace Dediu, an analyst for Asymco, believed that in Q4, 2011, Apple (73%) and Samsung (26%) cornered nearly all of the profit that was generated in the smartphone industry.

British teen Robson posts another upset at US Open

NEW YORK (AP) ? British teen Laura Robson faces a former Grand Slam champion in her next match at the U.S. Open, which shouldn't feel the least bit intimidating.

Not after she beat four-time major winner Kim Clijsters and 2011 French Open champ Li Na in three days. Next up is Sam Stosur, the defending champion at Flushing Meadows.

"She's obviously full of confidence and had two very, very good wins," Stosur said.

The 18-year-old Robson knocked out Li 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 on Friday. Ranked 89th, Robson had never been past the second round of a major tournament or defeated a top-10 opponent before this year's U.S. Open. Now she's done both after eliminating the ninth-seeded Li.

Robson put her hands to her head in shocked joy after the Chinese star returned her serve long on the final point.

She showed poise after failing to close out the match in the second-set tiebreaker, then overcoming two incorrect calls in the third set where she had to replay points she would've won if the initial ruling had been right.

With a break point on Li's serve at 2-2 in the final set, Robson's return clipped the baseline and Li hit the ball wide. But the line judge called Robson's shot out and, after a review overturned it, Robson lost the replayed point. Li won the next point as well to earn game point. But with the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd roaring its support, Robson rallied back to get the break.

On Wednesday, Robson ended Clijsters' career, winning both sets in tiebreakers in the second round against the 23rd-seeded Belgian. Robson's career may now be really getting started.

She became the next great British hope when she captured the 2008 Wimbledon girls title at age 14. Four years later, she seems to be reaching that potential, the youngest woman ranked in the top 100.

Robson is the first British woman to make the fourth round at a Grand Slam event since Sam Smith at 1998 Wimbledon.

Stosur was pushed for the first time in this year's Open by American Varvara Lepchenko, but dominated the second set after winning the first in a tiebreaker. The seventh-seeded Stosur, who won 7-6 (5), 6-2, had dropped just five games through her first two matches.

It was still a successful Open for the 31st-seeded Lepchenko. After reaching at least the third round in three straight Grand Slam events, she'll likely climb into the top 30 in the rankings.

Friday night could be the farewell for 2003 champion Andy Roddick. A day earlier, he announced this would be the final tournament of his career.

The American is set to face Bernard Tomic in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In earlier men's action, fourth-seeded David Ferrer won the first two sets in 62 minutes, then needed 65 minutes to clinch the third set in a tiebreaker that went 26 points. The Spaniard beat Igor Sijsling 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (12) in the second round.

NCAA champ Steve Johnson, who had played in just one Grand Slam match before this year's Open, reached the third round with a four-set win over 145th-ranked Ernests Gulbis.

The 22-year-old Johnson, ranked 245th, went undefeated this season for Southern Cal to win his second straight NCAA title and earn a wild card into the Open.

US threatens legal action over SEAL's bin Laden book

The Pentagon threatened legal action against the former Navy SEAL who has written a book recounting his role in the May 2011 raid that killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

Just days before the release of the first-hand account of the operation on Pakistani soil, the Pentagon's top lawyer, Jeh Johnson, told the author he had broken his promise to abide by a strict non-disclosure agreement signed before he retired from the military this year.

"In the judgment of the Department of Defense, you are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed" and the Pentagon is considering "all remedies legally available," Johnson said in a letter to the author, who writes under the pseudonym Mark Owen.

The former Navy commando's book "No Easy Day" is due to be released next week but has already sparked a wave of publicity and controversy.

He signed documents during his service and before he retired promising "never to divulge" classified information and to submit any manuscript to the Pentagon before publishing, Johnson said.

The Pentagon's general counsel noted that some copies of the book had appeared on Wednesday -- before next week's scheduled release -- and warned: "Further dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements," it said.

The letter did not indicate whether the book had revealed secrets that could endanger US forces but made clear that simply by failing to clear the manuscript with the military, the Navy SEAL had broken faith with his obligations.

Top military and intelligence officials, who met to discuss the book on Wednesday, have combed through the text in recent days looking for any disclosure of sensitive tactics or techniques but so far have not pointed to any worrisome revelations.

The Navy SEAL team member's version of bin Laden's death at his Abbottabad compound differs from previous accounts offered by President Barack Obama's administration and comes amid a politically-charged debate about the handling of state secrets in the wake of the raid.

The Pentagon made clear that the publisher, Penguin's Dutton, also faced potential legal jeopardy over the book.

"I write to you to formally advise you of your material breach and violation of your agreements, and to inform you that the Department is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation," it said.

The publisher has moved up the scheduled release date from September 11 to September 4, as media coverage has fueled a flood of orders for the book.

The book provides fresh details about the May 2011 raid, describing how bin Laden was first shot in the head as he peered out of a door and then pumped with bullets as he convulsed on the floor.

Previous official accounts said bin Laden had appeared in a doorway and ducked back into his bedroom, leading the US commandos to suspect he might be retrieving a weapon.

But the author said bin Laden was shot in the head by the SEAL team when he leaned out of the doorway and was found bleeding from his wound when commandos made their way to his room, according to excerpts cited in media reports and confirmed to AFP by defense officials.

The Al-Qaeda leader was mortally wounded and twitching on the floor as two women cried over his body. The team pushed aside the women and then fired more shots at him, according to the book.

We "fired several rounds," the author wrote in the book. "The bullets tore into him, slamming his body into the floor until he was motionless."

Fox News has revealed what it says is the identity of the author, a former Navy SEAL who also took part in the 2009 operation that rescued Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates.

Obama administration officials have appeared anxious to avoid having to discuss or defend in detail an operation they deem a major triumph, while suggesting the book did not shed any new light on the raid.

Judge Rewords Mo. Health Insurance Exchange Ballot Measure ...

A judge has reworded a ballot measure that would require that state's governor to seek legislative or voter approval before establishing a health insurance exchange over charges that the secretary of state's ballot language was misleading.

The Associated Press: Judge Revises Wording For Mo. Health Care Measure
A Missouri judge ruled Tuesday that Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan had provided an unfair and insufficient summary of a health care ballot measure to appear before voters this fall and instead ordered election authorities to use an alternative description backed by Republicans. The ruling marked a victory for Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and fellow Republicans in the Legislature, who referred the measure to the November ballot but then sued to contest the summary drafted by Carnahan's office (Blank, 8/28).

Kansas City Star: Judge Orders Switch In Wording Of Health Care Ballot Measure
A Cole County judge threw out the Democratic secretary of state's summary of a health care ballot measure Tuesday, replacing it with one backed by Republicans. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and a handful of legislative leaders filed a lawsuit last month accusing the secretary of state's office of writing a ballot summary that was "blatantly false, deceptive and intended to mislead the people." After hearing arguments from both sides, Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green agreed with Republicans (Hancock, 8/29).

Politico Pro: Judge Orders Rewording Of Ballot Question
A Missouri judge scrapped the language of a ballot question on health insurance exchanges Tuesday, giving a boost to Republicans in the state who argued that it was written in a biased way by Secretary of State Robin Carnahan. ... The suit stemmed from a ballot initiative offered by Republicans to deny the state's Democratic governor, Jay Nixon, the power to establish a state-based health insurance exchange unilaterally. Instead, he'd be forced to secure a vote of the Legislature or Missouri voters (Cheney, 8/28).

Calling it "premature," another judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by Wheaton College over the health law's mandate that it cover contraception in?the health plans it offers --

The Associated Press/Chicago Sun-Times: Judge Dismisses Lawsuit By Wheaton College
A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Wheaton College against the Obama administration for requiring religious institutions to offer health insurance to employees that covers the cost of contraception. U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle ruled Monday the lawsuit was premature because the government would not enforce the mandate against Wheaton until August 2013. She also noted the administration's promise to revise the mandate to accommodate some religious institutions before it goes into effect (8/28).

In campaign news related to the health law, an Indiana candidate for governor outlined his support for a "hybrid" health insurance exchange --

Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette?(Indiana): Gregg Supports Hybrid Health Care Option
Democrat gubernatorial candidate John Gregg said Monday he favors a hybrid health care exchange model. Running mate Vi Simpson noted that Republican opponent Mike Pence failed to make a decision on the matter, instead "throwing Hoosiers under the federal bureaucratic bus." The comments from the Democratic ticket came following a meeting with Gov. Mitch Daniels, who had sought input from all governor hopefuls. Health care exchanges are new entities being set up under the federal health care act to create an organized and competitive market for buying health insurance. They will offer a choice of health plans and largely serve individuals or small businesses buying insurance (Kelly, 8/28).

And a new poll finds the health law splits West Virginians, but unites them under some parts of the health law --

Charleston Daily Mail: Poll Finds West Virginians Favor Some Parts of Health Care Law
While many West Virginians disagree with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold President Barack Obama's health care plan, voters overwhelmingly favor key parts of the law, according to new results from the West Virginia Poll. The poll found that 46 percent of West Virginians disagree with the Supreme Court's June decision and 36 percent think it made the right call. The remaining 18 percent were undecided (Hunt, 8/29).

Moving toward regeneration

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The skin, the blood, and the lining of the gut -- adult stem cells replenish them daily. But stem cells really show off their healing powers in planarians, humble flatworms fabled for their ability to rebuild any missing body part. Just how adult stem cells build the right tissues at the right times and places has remained largely unanswered.

Now, in a study published in an upcoming issue of Development, researchers at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research describe a novel system that allowed them to track stem cells in the flatworm Schmidtea mediterranea. The team found that the worms' stem cells, known as neoblasts, march out, multiply, and start rebuilding tissues lost to amputation.

"We were able to demonstrate that fully potent stem cells can mobilize when tissues undergo structural damage," says Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stowers Investigator Alejandro S?nchez Alvarado, Ph.D., who led the study. "And these processes are probably happening to both you and me as we speak, but are very difficult to visualize in organisms like us."

Stem cells hold the potential to provide an unlimited source of specialized cells for regenerative therapy of a wide variety of diseases but delivering human stem cell therapies to the right location in the body remains a major challenge. The ability to follow individual neoblasts opens the door to uncovering the molecular cues that help planarian stem cells navigate to the site of injury and ultimately may allow scientists to provide therapeutic stem cells with guideposts to their correct destination.

"Human counterparts exist for most of the genes that we have found to regulate the activities of planarian stem cells," says S?nchez Alvarado. "But human beings have these confounding levels of complexity. Planarians are much simpler making them ideal model systems to study regeneration."

Scientists had first hypothesized in the late 1800s that planarian stem cells, which normally gather near the worms' midlines, can travel toward wounds. The past century produced evidence both for and against the idea. S?nchez Alvarado, armed with modern tools, decided to revisit the question.

For the new study, first author Otto C. Guedelhoefer, IV, Ph.D., a former graduate student in S?nchez Alvarado's lab, exposed S. mediterranea to radiation, which killed the worms' neoblasts while leaving other types of cells unharmed. The irradiated worms would wither and die within weeks unless Guedelhoefer transplanted some stem cells from another worm. The graft's stem cells sensed the presence of a wound -- the transplant site -- migrated out of the graft, reproduced and rescued their host. Unlike adult stem cells in humans and other mammals, planarian stem cells remain pluripotent in fully mature animals and remain so even as they migrate.

But when Guedelhoefer irradiated only a part of the worm's body, the surviving stem cells could not sense the injury and did not mobilize to fix the damage, which showed that the stem cells normally stay in place. Only when a fair amount of irradiated tissue died did the stem cells migrate to the injured site and start to rebuild. Next, Guedelhoefer irradiated a worm's body part and cut it with a blade. The surviving stem cells arrived at the scene within days.

To perform the experiments, Guedelhoefer adapted worm surgery and x-ray methods created sixty to ninety years ago. "Going back to the old literature was essential and saved me tons of time," says Guedelhoefer, currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was able to reproduce and quantify results obtained in 1949 by F. Dubois, a French scientist, who first developed the techniques for partially irradiating planarians with x-rays.

But Guedelhoefer went further. He pinpointed the locations of stem cells and studied how far they dispersed using RNA whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH), specifically adapted to planarians in S?nchez Alvarado's lab. Using WISH, he observed both original stem cells and their progeny by tagging specific pieces of mRNA . The technique allowed him to determine that pluripotent stem cells can travel and produce different types of progeny at the same time.

"In other systems, most migrating stem cell progeny are not pluripotent," says Guedelhoefer. "For the most part, blood stem cells in humans stay in the bone marrow but their progeny leave and turn into a few other cell types." But in planarians, it looks like those two things are completely separate. Stem cells can move and maintain the full potential to turn into other types of cells."

Next, S?nchez Alvarado looks forward to implementing genetic screens and transplantation experiments to disrupt or enhance the cellular behaviors the team observed, to figure out the "rules of engagement" for stem cell migration, he says.

"Why can some animals regenerate whole body parts but you and I are not good at it?" says S?nchez Alvarado. "Can we write an extra rule or erase one? Is it possible, for instance, to get rid of cancer while gaining regenerative properties? These are questions we'd love to have answers to."

Swiss acupuncturist charged in 16 HIV infections

(AP) ? A self-styled healer has been indicted by a Swiss court on charges that he intentionally infected 16 people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, in cases going back more than a decade, authorities said Thursday.

The unidentified man was indicted by a five-judge panel in Bern-Mitelland regional court on charges of intentionally spreading human disease and causing serious bodily harm, offenses that carry maximum penalties of five to 10 years respectively, said the regional prosecutor's office in Bern, the Swiss capital.

The office said in a statement that most of the victims attended a music school that the man operated.

A spokesman for the prosecutor, Christof Scheurer, said the man also practiced as an unlicensed, self-styled acupuncturist ? a trade which he is believed to have used between 2001 and 2005 as a pretext to prick and infect some of his victims with blood that was infected with AIDS.

HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, semen or breast milk.

The police investigation concluded that the man had used various pretexts to prick his victims, but it remained unclear exactly what objects he had used. In other cases, the investigation found, the self-described healer ? who is not HIV-positive ? had served his victims drinks that made them pass out so he could infect them.

"The defendant denies everything that is alleged," the prosecutor's statement added.

The cases apparently came to light when Bern hospital Inselspital began to investigate similar complaints of infections in connection with a so-called healer.

Prosecutors say the probe, which was launched after one alleged victim filed a criminal complaint in early 2005, has finally been completed, but that it took years because of a number of difficulties ranging from the use of genetic testing to identifying victims while adhering to protections for patient privacy.

Proceedings against a second suspect in the case have been permanently closed, the statement said, because his involvement could not be confirmed.

The Options For Root Criteria In Financial Bankruptcy | Tourism ...

Making the choice to file for personal bankruptcy is something that many find difficult, if not excruciating. But, armed with the right knowledge and information, it is possible to view the process as the best way to achieve a needed fresh start in your personal finance, and not something that must be dreaded. Put the tips in this article to work today and gain new perspective on what bankruptcy can do for you.

Exercise extreme caution when taking on any debt after you have filed bankruptcy. Some lender may offer credit cards to those who have filed for bankruptcy and want a new start. It is usually the case that such opportunities are accompanied by high interest charges. If you are not able to control yourself, you will end up back at square one.

Know the difference between Chapters 7 and 13 bankruptcies. Chapter 7 will wipe your debts clean, meaning you will not owe what you file against. Chapter 13 requires you to agree to repay your debts. These debts need to be repaid within three to five years of the filing date.

After filing for bankruptcy, get your life back on track. Ensure that your credit reports are updated, with each closed account and discharged debt correctly reported. Start paying your bills on a timely basis, as these accounts for one third of your credit score. On-time payments are the first step in rebuilding your credit.

Learn from it. Bankruptcy is a great chance for a fresh start. However, bankruptcy is not the end of problems. You must remember to use the fresh start to begin re-building your credit and learning how to budget and spend wisely. You can find a course either online or through the court to help with this.

Be aware of bankruptcy laws in your area. The requirements, and rules surrounding filing for bankruptcy vary from state to state. Aspirin may help men with prostate cancer live longer, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with surgery or radiation, could benefit from taking aspirin regularly, says a new study that includes a researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Taking aspirin is associated with a lower risk of death from prostate cancer, especially in men with high risk disease, according to a multicenter study published in the August 28 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Kevin Choe, assistant professor of radiation oncology at UT Southwestern, is first author of the paper.

Preclinical studies have shown that aspirin and other anticoagulation medications may inhibit cancer growth and metastasis, but clinical data have been limited previously. The study looked at almost 6,000 men in the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor (CaPSURE) database who had prostate cancer treated with surgery or radiotherapy.

About 2,200 of the men involved -- 37 percent -- were receiving anticoagulants (warfarin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, and/or aspirin). The risk of death from prostate cancer was compared between those taking anticoagulants and those who were not.

The findings demonstrated that 10-year mortality from prostate cancer was significantly lower in the group taking anticoagulants, compared to the non-anticoagulant group -- 3 percent versus 8 percent, respectively. The risks of cancer recurrence and bone metastasis also were significantly lower. Further analysis suggested that this benefit was primarily derived from taking aspirin, as opposed to other types of anticoagulants.

The suggestion that aspirin, a frequently prescribed and relatively well-tolerated medication, may improve outcomes in prostate cancer is of particular interest, Dr. Choe said, since prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men and the second-leading cancer killer in the U.S.

"The results from this study suggest that aspirin prevents the growth of tumor cells in prostate cancer, especially in high-risk prostate cancer, for which we do not have a very good treatment currently," Dr. Choe said. "But we need to better understand the optimal use of aspirin before routinely recommending it to all prostate cancer patients."

Other scientists involved with the study include Janet Cowan, Drs. June Chan, and Peter Carroll of the University of California, San Francisco; Dr. Anthony D'Amico of Harvard University; and senior author Dr. Stanley Liauw of the University of Chicago.

How to start an E-commerce website | Tech4idiots

Ever wanted to start an ecommerce website? You have this idea to start an online store and extend your business on the internet but don?t know where to start? Today, almost all businesses have their own online stores set up as an extension to their physical store. Having an online version of a business nowadays can either make or break the business, so it?s always an great advantage to have by extending your business or services online.

Whether you are creating an online store to sell your own products or even as an aspiring affiliate marketer, everybody has to start somewhere. Although there are already available online Ecommerce software you can buy to automate this process, it?s also a good thing that you know the step by step essentials in starting your own online store. And in this article, we are going to list the essential things you will need in order to start an ?ecommerce website?.

The ?ecommerce website ? is a sold link to Shopify.com, and totally wasted my time in writing and researching for this article. Google will eventually see that they are trying to game their search results by buying links and also by ripping off the website and writer. Apparently, shopify buys links to rank for keywords like ?ecommerce website?. Then Shopify would screw the website by not doing their part of their agreement.

1. Your Product
Of course, you need to sell a product or service. Essentially there are two types of goods that are suited to an ecommerce website. First is Hard goods, the physical products you need to ship or something that the buyer has to pick up. And second is soft goods, which is downloadable software.

2. Get a Hosting Service
The fact that you are going to build an online store, obviously you are going to need a host for your website. There are lots of hosting companies you can choose from, where you can also choose their different types of services depending on your hosting needs and also depending on your budget.

3. Build the Website
Now that you have a hosting account, you can now build your own website. If you have the know-how you can build the site from scratch or you can add ecommerce capabilities to your existing one. There are lots of website building software out there (free and paid) that can automatically create a new website for you even if you have no website building knowledge whatsoever. Or, you can also get some professionals to build the website for you but expect it to make a big dent on your budget.

4. Create a Shopping Cart
Since you are building an ecommerce website, the shopping cart is one of the most important elements of your online business. Elements that are critical to a shopping cart should be: Merchant tools, Shopping features, payment options (Credit card, check, cash, PayPal, etc.), shipping and tax configurations, and most importantly, security (having an ?HTTPS? is important for securing online transactions). There are lots of free and paid software for your website?s shopping cart so this would not be much of a problem.

5. Accept Credit Card payments
In order for your online store to work, you should be able to accept online payments, and this is through credit cards, you also need to make sure you are able to accept all major credits cards if you want to succeed here. As noted in #4 In this list, your shopping cart should be able to handle checks, E-checks, Cash on delivery, and PayPal, among others.

6. Set up an Merchant Account
Next, you will need a merchant account in order to handle the payments you will get from your online store. A merchant account is different from ordinary bank accounts; this is a special type of bank account for businesses so they are able to accept payments from credit cards and other forms of payments such as PayPal. A merchant account is fairly easy to apply for as ordinary and local banks provide them to businesses. You should read and understand their rules and terms of service regarding how your products will be bought, sold and paid for, and also due to that fact that you would be dealing with finances here.

7. Secure a Payment Gateway
Whenever your customers purchase a product from your online store, they would enter their credit card information and this information is passed on to the merchant web server through a payment gateway. Then, the payment gateway would receive the transaction info, and they would verify the credit card information entered and then confirm whether to accept or decline the card. After all is verified, the payment gateway would now send a receipt via email, one to the merchant web server and another one for the customer. After confirmation, the payment gateway would now send all the transaction info to the merchant bank and transfer it to your merchant account.

8. And finally Marketing
And now you have an online business up and running, and you?ll need customers, and how you will get customers to get to your online store is up to you. You would need to attract customers to your store in order to generate any sale. You can spread the word about your website through word of mouth, tell your friends about your online store and tell them to spread the word. You can also do advertising; if you have the budget you can advertise through popular media such as TV, radio, newspapers etc. There are lots of ways you can market your online store, only your imagination and creativity will be the limit. And if you?re lazy, and have the funds, you can also pay other people to do this work for you.

And there you have it, my short list on how to start an ecommerce website. If you have any question or want to add anything to the list feel free to leave a comment below.
