The Art of Flowers : New University

Courtesy of Lauren Adiova

The UC Irvine Arboretum had their annual Fall Art and Flower Festival on Oct. 20, showcasing ?Living Art? of California.

Orange County Fine Arts, a local art guild, presented a show and sale featuring art inspired by California?s outdoors and wildlife. All artists featured in the show were juried artists that the OC Fine Arts both qualified and managed.

Marie Taggart, Dennie Hahn, Maria Elena Bicer, Marilou Hogeboom and other local artists were there to showcase and sell their work. Art styles ranged from oil painting, plein air (California Impressionism), jewelry, photography, digital media and many other artistic styles.

The art show, one of the Arboretum?s major events, has taken place for more than 10 years.

?Marie Taggart, one of the artists, was painting here one day. She was painting our wildflowers and I stopped to admire her work and we started talking and that?s how it all got started,? said Laura Lyons, Arboretum nursery manager and volunteer coordinator.

Marie Taggart added, ?Usually it is just an invitational to people who like the garden. All of us belong to different groups. To paint with different people sometimes, it?s fun and we all get here together.?

The UCI Arboretum opened its $2 admission at 10 a.m. and continued to sell arts and plants until 3 p.m. Due to the rain clouds, people streamed in and out, a few at a time, of the arboretum, admiring the artwork.

The art show was held at the same time at the UCI Arboretum?s monthly plant sale and is one of the Arboretum?s six major plant sales of the year.

UCI students came at 7 a.m. to help the artists and Lyons set up for the event.

?We have students who volunteer here or take it as a class credit. We have Bio 197 where students weed and help out at the gardens and they get credit for it and then the other option is to do 199 with Dr. Bowler to do research and marsh work,? said Grace, a volunteer and biology major at UCI.

Plants sold at the sale match to the season they bloom and were selected according to popularity and availability. The Arboretum?s nursery grows many different yet easy to grow perennials, bulbs and succulents. In the fall, some of the plants that grow in the nursery are Creeping Cape Lilac (Plectranthus ciliates), Crassula ?Campfire? and Moonlight Gladiolus (Gladiolus tristis).

Plants in the sale are both California native plants and South African plants. The fall season is the ideal time for planting California native material, which can last from October to January. According to five-year volunteer Marti Heard, a UCI professor introduced the South African plants to the nursery because Irvine and South Africa had the same latitude, making the plants native to South Africa easy to grow. Plants were priced at a range of $8 to $35, with most plants sold from $8 to $11.

Despite the stormy clouds and the fact that Interstate 73 was under construction, causing business to be slow, one artist was not deterred. Bicer, who paints both watercolors and oil paintings and fuses glass to make jewelry, was born in Argentina and did not become an artist until the age of 45 because her parents had objected to her desire to become an artist after high school. She only began to pursue her dream and study art when she found many beautiful paintings in a friend?s home by chance and was given an art set for Christmas.

Happy that she sold two paintings, Bicer stated, ?There usually are more people, but I?m happy because it?s something to show what you do. I love to paint and I like everything that is art. That?s it. This is a dream come true.?

All proceeds from the plant sale support work done at the Arboretum, and the profit from the art sale went to the artists who, according to Lyons, usually make a donation as well.

Although the rain clouds remained in the sky for the whole five hours the Arboretum was open, people still came out to check out the nature-inspired art the artists worked hard on.

When asked if the event was a success, Lyons replied, ?We?ve done pretty well today. I?m a little disappointed about the weather. I would?ve liked it to be a little bit sunnier. That tends to really bring out the crowd, but I think we?ve done quite nicely today.?

Recipe: Roasted Cauliflower & Cabbage Pasta with Fried Capers ...

2012_10_22-cheddarpasta0.jpgThe other night, contemplating how best to discuss cheese within the confines of our pasta-themed week at The Kitchn, I envisioned a cheddar-laden dish. Forget the parm or the pecorino, I thought. How would cheddar be in pasta?

The answer, I can assure you, is worthy of a writeup. As is the recipe, which makes cheddar sing.

2012_10_22-cheddarpasta.jpgPasta and parm go together so seamlessly, it seems silly to even question using any other cheese as a finisher. Cheddar with pasta doesn't exactly seem like a logical fit, regardless of my love of both. But considering my proclivity towards all things cheddar, I'm surprised I've never thought to try it out. Cheddar melts beautifully, and if you buy an aged version, it's even more complex. A farmhouse cheddar would be delicious in this, too: slightly more earthy and savory.

I thought of trying something simple like Cacio e Pepe with cheddar instead of pecorino, to really highlight the cheddar on its own, with no embellishments. But cheddar has that bright milky sharpness-- that thing unique to cheddar and cheddar alone ? and I wanted to develop a pasta recipe that would incorporate other elements to complement that.

So then I started thinking about cabbage.

Cabbage is a seriously underutilized pasta partner. Saut?ed in butter and tossed with noodles and copious amounts of lemon and cheese is one of the best ways to enjoy the vegetable. Especially if you can find a Savoy.

It's almost Irish in nature, the cabbage and cheddar combination. And the cabbage made me think of cauliflower?roasted, more specifically?which kind of fit in with the Irish theme, too. I guess you could think of this pasta as Irish fusion, or at the very least, as an ode to brassicas.

Because I love cheddar with briny things like olives, and because cauliflower and capers are such natural friends, fried capers seemed like a perfect way to finish it all off. And finish it, we did.

Roasted Cauliflower and Cabbage Pasta with Fried Capers and Cheddar

Serves 4

1/3 cup plus 3 tablespoons olive oil
1 head cauliflower, trimmed, cored, and cut into small-sized florets
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 medium head Savoy cabbage (about 1 lb.), cored and thinly sliced
1 large shallot, sliced
3 sprigs thyme
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/4 cup large capers, drained, rinsed, and patted dry
1/2 pound pasta, such as orecchiette
2 cups coarsely grated sharp cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons fresh thyme, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Preheat oven to 425?F with a rack in the lower third and a baking sheet on the rack.

Carefully remove the hot baking sheet and drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add cauliflower and drizzle with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Season liberally with salt and pepper and shake pan to distribute cauliflower in an even layer. Return baking sheet to oven and roast until deeply golden, shaking pan halfway through, about 30 minutes. Set aside.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Cook until lightly browned and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add cabbage, shallot, thyme sprigs, and a healthy amount of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, until cabbage is wilted and deeply golden, about 15 minutes. Add white wine and cook until nearly evaporated, scraping the bottom of pan to deglaze. Turn off heat until ready to assemble pasta.

In a small skillet, heat remaining 1/3 cup olive oil until 350?F when read with a candy thermometer. Alternatively, you can test the oil by carefully dropping a caper into the skillet. If it sizzles vigorously, the oil is ready. Add capers and fry until crisp and light golden, about 2 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer capers to a paper towel-lined plate.

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package directions. Drain, reserving 1 cup pasta water.

Add the pasta to the skillet with the cabbage and return to a medium-high heat. Add the cheese and then the pasta water, 1/4 cup at a time, until pasta becomes slightly saucey. Fold in the roasted cauliflower, chopped thyme, and parsley. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper. Top with fried capers and serve immediately.

Economist Who Advises Mitt Romney: 'Rich Are Taxed Enough'

"The rich are taxed enough," argued Columbia Business School Dean Glenn Hubbard.

The man who The New York Times called Mitt Romney's "go-to economist" and who is considered a leading candidate to be treasury secretary in a Republican administration made his case at a debate in New York.

"Raising tax rates on the rich is both counter-productive and unnecessary to fund the government we want," said Hubbard.

While steering clear of specifics, Hubbard told the audience at the Intelligence Squared Debate that "higher tax rates won't necessarily produce enhancements in revenue."

"We can and should achieve fairness and growth without taxing the rich more than they are today," he said.

Hubbard's somewhat dry tone was balanced by the passion of one of his debate opponents, former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich. Speaking against the motion "the rich are taxed enough," Reich argued called the idea "absurd."

"The rich have done extraordinarily well but the rest haven't," said Reich to audience applause. "The percentage of total U.S. income of the top 1 percent has doubled in the past 30 years. Given where we are now, we shouldn't even have this debate."

Hubbard opposed raising tax rates for the rich but added, "We need a progressive tax system."

"The wealthy should pay a disproportionate share of taxes," he said.

Hubbard and his debate team colleague, Arthur Laffer, spoke out for tax reform that would lower rates but also broaden the tax base.

"We need to think about growth and fairness. Tax rates should not rise," said Hubbard.

The United States already has one of the most progressive tax systems in the world, he argued. Comparing the U.S. economy to a tall building, Hubbard said the "lower floors are flooded" while the people in the penthouse are doing well -but "the elevator is broken."

If the tax base were broadened with lower rates and tax reform, opportunity would be expanded and "we would get more revenues" to pay for the government," he said.

Perez Reviews: War Horse | PerezHilton.com

Run - or gallop on your steed - to the Vivian Beaumont Theater to see War Horse before it closes!

We had never seen the play - or the Spielberg film adaptation - but we really wanted to see it before it ends its run in January. And we're sure glad we did!

A simple story about a boy and his horse. Told in a not so simple fashion.

Everything about the show is stunning!

And, yes, we cried! A healthy, cathartic cry!

We were so moved by the show! And the storytelling! And the performances! And those freakin' puppets!

Those horses just come to life on stage! And we feel for them so deeply! It is truly breathtaking and MUST-SEE!

In many ways, this production reminds us a lot of July Taymor's The Lion King musical. A show that transcends to source material written for children and appeals to all ages, while benefiting from the simplicity of story.

Truly truly exquisite stuff!

Goldman Sachs tags London site as Europe HQ in "Project Armada"

LONDON (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs is lining up a future eight-storey building beside its London office as the site of its new European headquarters, according to confidential documents referring to project "Armada".

The bank purchased the second of two office blocks occupying the site of the new campus last year. But it has never confirmed it will move into the site adjacent to its current HQ on Fleet Street, the district which was the hub for Britain's newspapers until the 1980s when legal and financial firms moved in.

Over 100 pages of technical drawings and data seen by Reuters show a clear assumption that Goldman plans to consolidate its London operations into the new building, which is 1.2 million square feet.

The bank is simultaneously pressing ahead with plans to group its Bangalore offices together in a major new back-office centre housing 4,000 staff, codenamed "Big Bang."

"GS London and Bangalore campuses are currently not consolidated, obstructing collaboration among the GS employees and duplicating infrastructure requirements," the report by architect Adamson Associates said.

"Armada and Big Bang projects provide an opportunity for resolution of this situation," it said.

A Goldman Sachs spokeswoman declined to comment.

The London project has faced some hurdles. The site acquired by Goldman includes a building that was London's largest telephone exchange when it opened in 1961 and the bank needed special permission to remove protected murals from it.

The bank had argued that the nine ceramic panels by relatively unknown artist Dorothy Annan were not rare. But the murals were listed by the government as being of national importance and special interest as surviving works of 1960s mural art.

Goldman also had to promise telecoms firm BT Group that it would get access to current telecoms tunnels during and after construction.

The designs for the new London office include fan and generator rooms that can be used to power trading operations and a 50 square meter area for secure waste and shredding. There are also details on how much shower, locker and bicycle parking space will be included in the new building.

U.S. Patent Office Invalidates Apple Patent Used in - Geekosystem

These days, patents are used more in legal posturing than just about anything else. It goes to show just how?ludicrous?the system is, however, that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has filed an invalidation for Apple?s U.S. Patent No. 7,469,381. All 20 claims of Apple?s rubber-banding patent are now officially on their way to being thrown out. This includes the same claim 19 that was used against Samsung in the company?s recent high-profile trial.

In the end, the jury ruled that Samsung owed Apple $1.049 billion for copying the design of the iPhone, but this non-final decision from the USPTO could see the ruling receive new scrutiny. Samsung?s already filed a motion to have the judge consider exactly that. That doesn?t necessarily mean it?s going to stick, however.

The reexamination rejected claim 19 based on anticipation by two prior patents. That means that, essentially, the examiner concluded that there was literally nothing inventive about Apple?s claim that wasn?t already represented previously. Not only would Apple have to convince the USPTO that their claim was something new in order to refute the decision, they?d have to prove that it was a significant enough step away from the original to justify the patent being awarded at all.

Given that this is a non-final decision, Apple will surely put forth all of its legal might to see their side through to the end. They?re not done fighting just yet. There?s still a ways to go yet before the patent is thrown out, but it surely will help weigh things in Samsung?s favor for the time being.

Giants beat Cardinals 6-1 to force NLCS Game 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Ryan Vogelsong and these San Francisco Giants sure have become adept at saving their season.

Now, they need to do it once more against the comeback champs.

Vogelsong struck out a career-best nine in another postseason gem and on his biggest stage yet, and San Francisco staved off elimination for the second straight game, pushing St. Louis to a winner-take-all Game 7 in the NL championship series with a 6-1 victory Sunday night.

"There are two teams in the same boat right now. You'll see two teams go out and give it everything they've got," Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt said. "This is what we play all year for and we'll put it all on the line. This is Game 7. There's only one better Game 7. They are no more what-if scenarios."

Turns out the defending champion Cardinals aren't the only team tough to put away in October.

Marco Scutaro delivered a two-run double and Buster Posey drove in his first run of the series with a groundout in the first inning as San Francisco struck early to support Vogelsong.

San Francisco's Matt Cain and St. Louis' Kyle Lohse are set to pitch in a rematch of Game 3, won by the Cardinals. There's a forecast of rain in the Bay Area during the day.

"It's time to get it done," Lohse said.

These wild-card Cardinals sure seem to like the all-or-nothing route in October, while San Francisco thrives playing from behind.

"Clutch performances are just guys playing normally in big spots. You can't be petrified by the situation, and neither of these teams have been," St. Louis' Lance Berkman said. "One of the things that makes Game 7's so interesting is that I don't think either of these teams is going to choke it away."

Five games with their year on the line, five wins for these gutsy Giants this postseason. Now, it comes down to one game for the past two World Series champions to return, with the Detroit Tigers waiting.

Pitching to chants of "Vogey! Vogey!" from the sellout crowd of 43,070 at AT&T Park, the right-hander didn't allow a hit until Daniel Descalso's broken-bat single to center with two outs in the fifth. Vogelsong struck out the side in the first and had already fanned five through two innings.

"This place is going to be loud, I can tell you that," Vogelsong said of Monday night.

Scutaro had no chance for a collision with Matt Holliday this time. In their first game back at AT&T Park since Holliday took out the second baseman with a hard slide in Game 2, Holliday was scratched about an hour before first pitch because of tightness in his lower back, and Allen Craig replaced him in left field.

It hardly mattered the way Vogelsong pitched.

The Cardinals managed their only run on Craig's two-out single in the sixth. St. Louis had gone 15 innings without scoring after left-hander Barry Zito won 5-0 on Friday in Game 5.

"I just tried to do really the same thing he did, come out and set the tone early for us," Vogelsong said.

Vogelsong had his second stellar seven-inning outing against the Cardinals in a week, allowing four hits and one run. He walked one in a 102-pitch performance and lowered his postseason ERA ? all this year ? to 1.42.

The 35-year-old Vogelsong toiled through the minors, Japan and even winter ball to finally pitch under the October spotlight for a chance at the World Series. His latest impressive outing put the Giants one win away.

"I just believe that it's my time," Vogelsong said.

After taking a 3-1 lead back home at Busch Stadium, Mike Matheny's Cardinals will have to find some offense in a hurry if they want to get back to the World Series.

"We've got to make some adjustments but our team's done that all season," Matheny said. "One thing I know is these guys take these to heart."

These Cards might just prefer close calls. Just like last year.

They won the NL's second wild card on the second-to-last day of the regular season, then won at Atlanta to reach the division series. The Cardinals rallied from a 6-0 deficit with a four-run ninth inning to stun the Washington Nationals 9-7 in Game 5 of the division series.

The Giants got to St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter again. The Cardinals winningest postseason pitcher with 10 victories looked out of sync for the second straight start ? and he left with a nearly identical line as in his 7-1 Game 2 loss here last Monday, down to the hits, earned runs, unearned runs and innings.

Carpenter was done in by one big inning this time, too. He allowed six hits and five runs, two earned, in four innings.

"The bottom line is I'm not giving my team a chance to win," Carpenter said. "You go out with a 5-0 lead after two innings, it's not giving your team a chance."

Vogelsong reached on shortstop Pete Kozma's fielding error in the second, scoring Brandon Belt after he led off the inning with a triple. Scutaro came up two batters later and doubled home two more runs.

The 10 unearned runs allowed by the Cardinals are the most in an NLCS, according to STATS LLC ? topping the nine given up by the Braves in 2001 and Dodgers in 1985.

San Francisco never faced an elimination game in 2010 on the way to winning the World Series, but has had to go the distance in each of its first two postseason series this year. They became the first team in major league history to come back from a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-five series by winning three straight on the road as they did at Cincinnati.

"We're enjoying this moment. We know how to handle this situation," San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval said.

They have Vogelsong along for this year's run.

"He was on top of his game again," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's probably been as consistent as any starter this year."

The Giants put pressure on Carpenter right away.

Scutaro drew a one-out walk and Sandoval doubled off the wall in center on a ball that eluded Jon Jay. Posey followed with a groundout to third to score Scutaro for a 1-0 lead.

Scutaro is batting .458 (11 for 24) during the NLCS.

"I don't really know, man," Scutaro said when asked to explain it. "Just excited to come to the field every day. ... Being in this opportunity, just being in the playoffs, is amazing."

While the Giants have won five straight games facing elimination this postseason, the Cardinals have won their last six dating to last year. This is the first time the NLCS has gone seven games since 2006, when St. Louis beat the New York Mets 3-1 at Shea Stadium. Carlos Beltran, now with the Cardinals, struck out looking when Adam Wainwright froze him on a curveball.

"This night, this moment belongs to every player in here and every fan in the stands," San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence said. "There's still another story to be told, and we'll just have to wait and see if we're going to enjoy it."

NOTES: Matheny said he wasn't sure whether Holliday would be available Monday. "Wait and see, we'll see tomorrow," he said. ... Giants 1B coach Roberto Kelly worked his first home game of the series after sustaining a concussion during the initial workout day Oct. 13 before the NLCS began. He gave a thumbs-up before running out to the field during pregame warmups. ... San Francisco is 5-1 when scoring first this postseason. ... The most unearned runs allowed in any LCS is 13, by the Angels in 1986 against the Red Sox. ... The Cardinals didn't get a leadoff man aboard all game.

After final debate, Obama says election comes down to trust

DAYTON, Ohio (Reuters) - President Barack Obama warned voters on Tuesday that Republican rival Mitt Romney cannot be trusted to deal honestly with the public as the presidential campaign shifted from televised confrontation to a frantic dash for votes.

After three televised debates that have boosted Romney's prospects before the November 6 election, Obama delivered what is likely to be his closing argument: that, unlike Romney, he has been honest with voters about his plans to deliver a broadly shared prosperity over the next four years.

"There is no more serious issue in a presidential campaign than trust," Obama told a rally of 11,000 people in Florida. "Everything he's doing right now is trying to hide his real positions in order to win this election."

The charge ties together several critiques of Romney, from shifting policy stances that Obama mockingly attributes to "Romnesia" to a persistent charge that the wealthy former private-equity executive is more concerned with helping fellow millionaires than the struggling middle class.

Romney said Obama is resorting to attacks in the absence of new ideas of his own.

"Attacks on me are not an agenda," Romney told 6,000 people at a rally in Henderson, Nevada. "We haven't heard an agenda from the president and that's why his campaign is taking on water and our campaign is full speed ahead."

Obama leads Romney among likely voters by a statistically insignificant margin of 1 percentage point, according to Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll on Tuesday.

Obama unveiled a glossy booklet outlining his second-term agenda, which will serve as an important prop for his massive grassroots network. The campaign said it will print 3.5 million copies for volunteers to distribute in door-to-door canvassing.

The booklet contains no new proposals, but could help rebut what Romney aides say will be their central message in the final two weeks of the campaign: that the country cannot afford another four years of an Obama presidency because he has no plan to fix the sluggish economy.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden called the plan a "glossy panic button."

In their final debate on Monday, Obama accused the former Massachusetts governor of a reckless and inconsistent approach to international affairs. Romney played down his disagreements with the president as he sought to present a reassuring image to a war-weary public.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll taken after the debate found that Obama won the exchange in the eyes of more voters, though there were few signs that his victory would substantially affect the outcome of the race.

Romney avoided gaffes that would disqualify him in the eyes of voters and emerged from the three debates with an energized base, a full war chest and a sense of momentum.

A SUPERCHARGED CAMPAIGN

Most importantly, nearly half the electorate now sees him as a plausible president.

"These debates have supercharged our campaign, there's no question about it," Romney said.

Still, Obama holds a narrow advantage in the handful of battleground states that will decide the election. Romney will have a hard time winning the White House if he does not carry Ohio, where Obama retains a narrow lead thanks in part to his bailout of the U.S. auto industry.

After starting the day in Florida, Obama flew to Dayton, Ohio, where he pointed out that Romney had said the government should not step in to prop up the industry during the financial crisis of 2008-2009.

"If Mitt Romney had been president when the auto industry was on the verge of collapse we might not have an American auto industry today. We might be buying cars from China instead of selling cars to China," Obama said.

Florida is also a critical swing state in the election, and most polls show Romney leading there by a narrow margin.

Statistics compiled by the Miami Herald show that Republicans have a slight edge among the 830,000 voters who have cast their ballots by mail already. Democrats hope to even the score with early in-person voting, which starts on Saturday.

Obama campaign officials say their efforts to encourage supporters to vote early are locking in their advantage among minorities, younger voters and those who less reliably participate in elections.

"The Romney campaign has bet that young people and minorities won't turn out. The early voting is proving the folly of that gamble," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call.

Obama supporters say they have expected a close race all along, given the polarized electorate and the sluggish economy.

"You knew this election was going to tighten up no matter who our opponent was," Vice President Joe Biden said on CBS's "This Morning" program.

To accompany their get-out-the-vote efforts, both campaigns and their allies are saturating the airwaves with new advertisements in an effort to sway the remaining undecided voters. Reuters/Ipsos polling indicates that roughly one in five voters may be undecided or willing to switch their support.

In a new ad set to air in swing states, Obama highlights successes like the auto-industry bailout and urges voters to read his plan for a second term.

"We're not there yet but we've made real progress, and the last thing we should do is turn back now," he says.

Restore Our Future, a group allied with Romney, released two new ads that will air in swing states.

"Barack Obama's economy isn't working. Demand better," one of the ads says.

Easiest Solutions To Help You Finally Give Up Smoking | ArticlePDQ ...

Set a specific date for you to quit smoking, and tell everyone you know what this big day will likely be. It?ll generate a sense of accountability on your side, one that you actually will be ashamed to not follow through with. You will be seen as a failure or someone who cannot control their actions. In addition, those around you can help you quit, if you give them the opportunity to do so.

Throw or give away all of your cigarettes or any other tobacco products. If you don?t have quick access to cigarettes, you won?t be tempted to have one last cigarette or even to go back to smoking when you really feel stressed. In addition, if you decide to smoke, you?ll must put more energy into getting tobacco and might change your mind by the time you can get it.

Write down the reasons why

you want to quit smoking. Post the list someplace where you?ll see it every day, to help keep you motivated. Include not only the reasons that directly benefit you, but also the reasons that quitting will benefit your friends and family. Being able to read your list every day will remind you of why you stopped smoking in the first place.

Do not quit alone. Tell everyone you around on regularly that you are trying to quit smoking. They can provide support and encouragement and it can make a huge difference. You might also consider a support group or a counselor. Behavior therapy can help you come up with and stick to strategies that will help you quit smoking.

Think about how good you felt before you smoked. Focus on how healthy, happy and active you were as a smoke-free child. Think about the foods you loved, the scents you loved and how fit you were, this will give you added incentive to stop smoking.

In order to quit smoking successfully, ask for help from the people you see most. Having the support of family, friends, and co-workers can mean the difference between success and failure. Quitting any habit is difficult, especially one like smoking that is addictive. Make sure the people around you cheer you on and do not intentionally thwart your success.

Though you will likely spend some money on aids to help you stop smoking, do not be discouraged by this. Remember the extraordinary cost of cigarettes and calculate how much you spend on a daily basis. Add up the days over the course of a year, and you will almost certainly be spending less on the methods you choose to help you stop this dangerous habit once and for all.

Best Way To Quit Smoking

The best way to quit smoking if you are able to is to quit cold turkey. While that can be somewhat difficult, it is possible, and you can do it. It can take dedication, willpower, and determination. You must decide for yourself that it is the best thing for you. It is quite hard, and it is harder to give up cold turkey. However, if you are able to, its the greatest method to quit.

Smoking cigarettes is one of those love hate relationships. If you?ve traveled over to more of the hate than the love, you may finally be ready. This article was geared to make you figure out what it is going to take for you to finally stop. If you use the ideas you read right here, have to notice that a very important factor that can make a huge difference in the world.

UCI to announce decision on Armstrong case

GENEVA (AP) ? Cycling's governing body is set to announce Monday whether it will ratify Lance Armstrong's lifetime ban and the loss of seven Tour de France titles ordered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

International Cycling Union President Pat McQuaid will announce at a 7 a.m. EDT news conference whether the UCI will accept USADA'S decision to strip Armstrong of his Tour titles or appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Following that, it will be the turn of Tour de France organizers to have their say as the race prepares to celebrate its 100th edition next year.

Tour President Christian Prudhomme is awaiting the UCI's decision, saying he will remove Armstrong's name from the record books if the UCI takes away his titles.

Armstrong won consecutive Tours from 1999-2005. Prudhomme said the Tour will have no official winners for those races if the UCI strips Armstrong of his wins.

Cyrille Guimard, a former sprinter who won seven Tour stages, has been highly critical of the UCI and thinks Armstrong may be let off.

"It's not Armstrong's interest which is at stake in this affair, but the interest of all those who are involved closely or from afar," Guimard told RMC radio Sunday. "I'm fairly skeptical. An amnesty is in the pipeline."

If Armstrong's victories are not reassigned there would be a hole in the record books and it would mark a shift from how organizers treated similar cases in the past.

When Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 Tour victory for a doping violation, organizers awarded the title to Luxembourg's Andy Schleck. In 2006, Oscar Pereiro was awarded the victory after the doping disqualification of American rider Floyd Landis.

USADA also thinks the Tour titles should not be given to other riders who finished on the podium, such was the level of doping during Armstrong's era.

The agency said 20 of the 21 riders on the podium in the Tour from 1999 through 2005 have been "directly tied to likely doping through admissions, sanctions, public investigations" or other means. It added that of the 45 riders on the podium between 1996 and 2010, 36 were by cyclists "similarly tainted by doping."

Armstrong has kept a low profile since USADA's 200-page report stunned the sports world.

On Sunday, he greeted about 4,300 cyclists at the Livestrong charity's fundraiser bike ride, before retreating into privacy as he braced for the UCI's decision.

Armstrong spoke briefly, telling the crowd he's faced a "very difficult" few weeks. But he did not otherwise mention USADA's report detailing evidence of performance-enhancing drug use by himself and his teams.

"I've been better, but I've also been worse," said Armstrong, who has lost some of his big sponsors ? like Nike and Trek Bicycle ? and also stepped down as chairman of Livestrong.

Austerity protesters fed up with economy to march in London

LONDON (Reuters) - Thousands of anti-austerity protesters will march in London on Saturday to protest against public spending cuts enacted by a government fighting off accusations that it is run by an upper-class elite that ignores the plight of recession-hit voters.

The march comes at a time when Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative-led coalition is reeling from the resignation on Friday of a senior minister accused of calling police "plebs", a class-laden insult for working people.

The party faced a barrage of negative headlines on Saturday over the departure of Andrew Mitchell, the "Chief Whip" or party enforcer, four weeks after he swore at police guarding the gates to Cameron's Downing Street office.

A second row involving George Osborne, the Chancellor - who sat in a first class train carriage with a standard class ticket before paying for an upgrade - played into the hands of critics who say the Conservatives are privileged and out-of-touch.

"Who Do They Think They Are?" asked the Daily Mail newspaper in a front page headline, while the Financial Times said the bad news over Mitchell and Osborne capped a "dismal week for the Tories", the centre-right party that is trailing in the polls.

Nurses, cleaners, librarians and ambulance drivers will be among tens of thousands who will march past the Houses of Parliament to a rally in Hyde Park in one of the biggest anti-austerity protests this year. Marches will also take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Glasgow, Scotland.

Under grey autumnal skies, police closed roads around parliament in Westminster before the start of the march at 11 am.

Trade union leaders will seek to pile more pressure on Cameron at the event where they will tell protesters that the government's economic plan has failed, prolonging Britain's second recession since the financial crisis.

"Austerity isn't working. It is hammering the poorest and the most vulnerable," Brendan Barber, head of the Trades Union Congress, an umbrella group which represents 54 unions, will say in a speech at the rally.

"Ministers told us that if we only accept the pain, recovery would come. Instead we have been mired in a double-dip recession."

COALITION UNDER PRESSURE

The coalition government has responded to calls from unions and the opposition Labour Party to do more to boost growth by relaxing planning laws and boosting lending to businesses.

But its latest attempt to ease the pressure on squeezed households backfired this week when Cameron said the government would legislate to force energy companies to give customers their lowest tariff. The surprise announcement appeared to take his own ministers by surprise and sowed confusion over what he meant and whether it would actually happen.

However, Sajid Javid, a Conservative Treasury minister, said the government was right to focus on cutting borrowing and that data last week indicating a fall in unemployment and inflation showed that its economic policies were on track.

"There is a still a lot to do," he told Sky News. "I don't pretend for a second that we are out of the woods, but this government is facing up to the problem, it is not sticking its head in the sand like (Labour opposition leader) Ed Miliband."

Asked about the perception that the Conservatives are out of touch, he said: "I think that what matters is what is actually happening out there in the real world."

Opponents of the unions say the government should stick to its plan to eliminate a budget deficit that stood at 8 percent of gross domestic product last year, the biggest of any major European country.

"The government must not listen to militant union leaders," said Mark Littlewood, director general of the Institute of Economic Affairs, which describes itself as an independent free-market think-tank. "The cuts we have seen are tiny and further concessions to these protesters would be wholly unaffordable."

Romney's 20% Income Tax Cut, ?the Math Works?, by Joe Wallace ...

It does not balance the federal budget but it does provide a middle class tax cut without cutting taxes for high income earners

Joe Wallace, Coachella Valley iHub

One of the biggest points of contention in both the Vice Presidential debates and the Presidential debates that degenerated into a ?your math doesn?t work? vs. ?oh yes it does? spitting contest had to do with an assertion made by Republican Mitt Romney regarding an across the board income tax cut.

Mr. Romney asserted that it was possible to cut the tax rates across the board by 20% and at the same time place a cap on deductions without giving a big tax break to people considered by the Obama campaign to be in the top 1% at the expense of the middle class. Romney did not share a specific cap that he would propose to place on deductions but has publically mentioned the numbers $17,000, $25,000, and $50,000 as possibilities.

In an attempt to settle the argument, satisfy my own curiosity, and to boil the question down to a simple IRS Form 1040 that most of us are familiar with, a new tax table was constructed for a Romney proposal. Currently the top tax rate of 35% kicks in for married filing jointly filers at an adjusted gross income of $379,000 where highly paid couples are required to contribute (that is the word used in the tax code) $102,574 plus 35% of the amount over $379,000.

With a Romney proposed cut in rates of 20% this couple?s ?contribution? would be $81,060 plus 28% of the amount of AGI over $379,000. On the surface that looks like a big tax cut for a couple making a combined salary of over 7 times the average household income which is now just over $50,000 per year or 10% below its high.

Limiting the amount of itemized deductions allowable will in most cases change that. In order to investigate what would have to happen for Mr. Romney?s claim to be possible a simple Excel spreadsheet was created with variable deduction limitations. A further assumption was made that the average high earning couple currently has a total of 25% of gross earned income in deductions.

A number of iterations were conducted and the magic number for the deduction limitation came out to be $49,357. That limitation guarantees that a couple with gross earnings of $500,000 or above with deductions of 25% of earnings with not ever pay less taxes that they would have paid under the current tax rules and rates. Furthermore those who earn above $500,000 per year pay more in income taxes that they would under the present system.

Couples with high earnings an deductions below the deduction limitation would get a tax break which seems in line with the intention of only limiting deductions that are actually used.
A couple earning $5 Million per year would see their taxes increase by 6.14% to $1,361,120 per year. In a rare and extreme instance where a couple earned $1 Billion they would see a tax increase of 6.8% to $279,961,120.

This analysis of course made no assumptions with regard to capital gains and only dealt with taxes levied on earned income which all Americans are subject to pay.
The conclusion with respect to the debate based pissing contest is that Romney is right. He can drop income tax rates 20% without redistributing money from the middle class to high wage earners.
A couple with an AGI of $50,000 under the Romney plan will see and income tax reduction of $1,500 based on the tax rate dropping from 15% to 12%.
Of course this does not balance the federal budget but it does simplify the tax code and go a long way toward leveling the playing field with respect to itemized deductions.

Suit: Doctors mistakenly declared Chicago boy dead

(AP) ? The parents of an 8-year-old boy have sued a Chicago hospital, alleging doctors pronounced their son dead though he was still alive and refused to listen to desperate relatives who insisted he continued to move his eyes and body.

The lawsuit, filed this week, accuses Mercy Hospital and Medical Center of negligence and alleges that nearly five hours passed before staff agreed to perform a cardiac ultrasound, which showed Jaylen Dorsey's heart was beating.

"You didn't have to be a doctor to see that the heart was pumping blood," the boy's father, Pink Dorsey, said at a news conference Friday.

Hospital officials deny the allegations.

Jaylen, who has a disability that keeps him bedridden and on a ventilator, was found unresponsive by his mother, Sheena Lane, on Feb. 18. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and doctors there pronounced the boy dead.

The family says Jaylen's eyes continued to flick open, but that his parents were told the lingering effects of medicine were causing that to happen.

"We're not doctors, so we just went along with what they told us," Dorsey said.

So family members began to plan a funeral for the boy.

But when other relatives arrived at the hospital, they gasped when they saw Jaylen's eyes opening, the boy's father said.

The lawsuit says the family had to demand that medical staff conduct more tests and that a cardiac ultrasound finally showed the boy's heart was beating.

The hospital, which rejects the lawsuit's allegations, said in a written statement that Jaylen arrived at the hospital after suffering full cardiac arrest for 25 minutes and doctors treated him for "an extended period of time" before declaring him dead.

"Despite extensive resuscitative efforts, Jaylen did not immediately regain a pulse and no heart activity was noted for several hours," the hospital said. "... While this is a very rare occurrence, extensive resuscitation efforts, medication and young age can result in a patient's heart function returning spontaneously. We hope for continued strength for Jaylen."

His parents are seeking $200,000 in damages. The lawsuit says they suffered hours of "severe emotional distress."

The boy's parents also worry that the hours he was off his respirator while at the hospital may have worsened his condition.

Lawyer for the parents said that because of the ongoing litigation they would not release details about his disability.

Your Next Vacation: Learn to Ski

We know where the first humans started to ski, though it's impossible to say when. Archaeologists found a cave painting of a skier in Norway dated to five thousand BCE, no doubt going for the gold. They've also found a single ski, up to forty-five hundred BCE in Sweden.

Skiing has Old Norse connections, with the very word being derived from their word for "split wood". Two minor Norse deities were said to have skied. There's no telling how it was invented. It isn't improbable that its inventor was the first person who ever tried walking through three feet of snow.

Skiing is divided into two broad categories. Nordic includes cross-country skiing and Telemark skiing. Telemark has its roots in 1869, at the beginning of skiing's adoption as a world recreation. What distinguishes it is that the skier's heel is completely free of any harness, so that the skier can kneel while turning. This is an easier, more natural style. While Telemark faded in popularity in the middle 20th Century, it has come into vogue since the Seventies due to skiing traditionalists.

Alpine skiing, the most popular type, is what most people envision when they think of skiing. Alpine is that rarefied winter world of lodges, lifts, and famous resorts. Its formal distinction is that the heel isn't free, but is attached to the ski. As competition, it has four principal kinds. Downhill has the fewest turns, slalom the most, with giant slalom and super giant slalom filling in the middle.

Those just starting out on the slopes usually have just a bit of trouble learning to become graceful on skis. It does help to have at least some minimal athleticism. You can hold your place on the slope by keeping the skis perpendicular to it, but that's almost cheating. True skiers accomplish this by holding the skis in the shape of a triangle, tips touching in front.

In order to start skiing, think of both skis together as a single tool. Aim the tips down the hill and lean forward. If you lean back, or even stand up straight, the tendency will be for your skis to slide out underneath you.

When you turn, shift your weight where you intend to turn. Edging your skis in that direction is a skill that will improve with experience, letting you carve smoother turns. Your energy, and even your mind, should be in the feet, in the ankles, lower legs and knees. When skiing on powder most of that thrust should be in the thighs. The basic rule is that to lighten up the pressure, stand up.

Skiing has a reputation for being dangerous that is undeserved. The number of people who get killed on the slopes is the same as those who killed by lightning, about 40 per year. Only about 10 percent of injuries come from collisions. There are many more twisted knees than concussions in skiing. If you're still concerned, there's a nice, easy "bunny slope" for you to learn on. So get out there and ski!

Plant-based foods may offer reduced risk for aggressive prostate cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? President George W. Bush made no secret that he detested broccoli. With all due respect to our former leader, researchers have found one more great reason to add fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea to your diet.

A study by Susan Steck of the Arnold School of Public Health finds that a high intake of flavonoids, a group of compounds found in plants, may lower the risk for highly aggressive prostate cancer.

"Incorporating more plant-based foods and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea, into the diet may offer some protection against aggressive prostate cancer," said Steck, an associate professor at the Arnold School and an affiliated scholar with the Center for Research in Health Disparities.

"Filling your plate with flavonoid-rich foods is one behavior that can be changed to have a beneficial impact on health," she said.

Steck presented her findings at the International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research. The annual event is sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research, whose mission is to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication and collaboration.

Prior preclinical studies have shown that flavonoids have beneficial effects against prostate cancer, but few studies have examined the effect of flavonoids on prostate cancer in humans.

Steck and her colleagues used data from 920 African-American men and 977 white men in the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project who were newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Participants completed a self-reported dietary history questionnaire to assess flavonoid intake, which was measured using the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2011 Database for the Flavonoid Content of Selected Foods.

Men with the highest total intake of flavonoids had a 25 percent lower risk for aggressive prostate cancer compared with those men with the lowest flavonoid intake.

"We found that higher total flavonoid intake was associated with reduced odds for aggressive prostate cancer in both African-American and European-American men, but no individual subclass of flavonoids appeared to be protective independently, suggesting that it is important to consume a variety of plant-based foods in the diet, rather than to focus on one specific type of flavonoid or flavonoid-rich food," Steck said.

In addition, the risk for aggressive prostate cancer was even lower in those men younger than 65 and in current smokers with the highest levels of flavonoid intake. Dietary questionnaire results revealed that citrus fruits and juices, such as oranges and grapefruits, tea, grapes, strawberries, onions and cooked greens were the top contributors to total flavonoid intake among the participants. "The results support public health recommendations and guidelines from organizations such as the American Institute for Cancer Research to consume a more plant-based diet," Steck said. "In particular, consuming more flavonoid-rich foods may be beneficial for those people who are at increased risk for cancer, such as smokers."
