Instagram prankster finds way into celeb pics

Pop culture

If you think celebrities are Photoshopped in many of the images they appear in, you're going to love the work of Instagram user PeejeT.

The 25-year-old, who goes by what he calls his "stage name" on the photo-sharing site and Twitter, is gaining attention and followers for his very fun ability to insert himself into events where only celebs previously existed.

Instagram user PeejeT gives himself a seat next to Kim Kardashian, right, and shares a laugh with Jay-Z and Beyonce as Kanye West gets pushed back a row.

Many of his 100 or so photos have him sitting next to -- or on the lap of -- some of the leading women and men of hip-hop. And it's not a stretch to say PeejeT has a thing for Beyonce, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian in particular.

"Yeah, I am a fan of hip-hop and all of those ladies," PeejeT said via email on Thursday. "I'm sure they think I'm the weirdest dude ever."

Judging by the comments on Instagram, his 64,000 followers think he's hilarious. There he is sitting next to Kardashian at an awards show, with Kanye sulking in the background. Ever wanted to vacation with Beyonce? PeejeT took the liberty of making that happen for himself, despite the awkward presence of her husband, Jay-Z.

PeejeT is poolside with Beyonce -- take another lap, Jay-Z.

"I've gotten some replies and re-tweets from the celebs themselves. It's cool when they realize it's all in good fun," PeejeT said. "Some hardcore fans of these people do send me tweets begging me to stop followed by many frowny faces. I'm sure Jay-Z, Kanye, and Chris Brown aren't my biggest fans either ... ha!"

What makes the photos fun is a mix of the moment PeejeT chooses to insert himself into, and the relatively amateur manipulation of the photos with the editing software.

"I don't claim to be some graphic design wizard or anything," PeejeT said. "I'm just a guy that downloaded and taught myself how to use Photoshop a couple years ago thinking it would be funny to put myself in some pictures with celebs. I started doing them for something my friends and I can laugh at."

He told The Daily Dot that he chooses pics by whatever is trending on Twitter.

"For instance, when Miguel leg dropped that fan at the Billboard Music Awards everyone was talking about it so I tried to get as creative and funny with it as I can," PeejeT said. "I just love making people laugh."

And for a guy whose web identity is growing by the moment thanks to this labor of love, PeejeT preferred not to take a phone call on Thursday ... because he was "at work."

Microsoft promo: buy a Surface RT, get a free keyboard cover (updated)

Microsoft promo buy a Surface RT, get a free Touch or Type Cover

There's no question that the Surface RT comes into its own with a keyboard cover; we can't imagine using the tablet unadorned. Microsoft can't, either, as it's launching a promo that gives the covers away. Americans and Canadians who buy the Windows RT slate between now and the end of June can get either the Touch Cover or the Type Cover for free, no matter which color they fancy. Surface Pro customers are out of luck, but it's hard to dispute the value for prospective Surface RT owners -- the deal amounts to at least a $100 discount on the touch PC's real-world price.

Update: To be clear, this promo has been running in other countries; it's just now debuting in North America, however.

AP sources: Obama to name ex-Bush aide to head FBI

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is prepared to nominate James Comey, a former Bush administration official with bipartisan credentials, as the next FBI director. In a possible warning sign, the top Republican on the Senate committee that would review the nomination said Comey would face questions about his ties to Wall Street.

Three people with knowledge of the selection said Wednesday that Obama planned to nominate Comey, who was the No. 2 official at the Justice Department under President George W. Bush. Comey was general counsel to Connecticut-based hedge fund Bridgewater Associates from 2010 until earlier this year and now lectures at Columbia Law School.

Comey would replace Robert Mueller, who has held the job since shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, which forced the FBI to transform itself into one of the nation's chief weapons in the war on terror. Mueller's last day on the job is Sept. 4.

The White House may hope that Comey's Republican background will help him through Senate confirmation at a time when some of Obama's nominees have been facing tough battles. But Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, indicated Comey's confirmation hearing would raise questions about the Obama administration's investigations of Wall Street.

Grassley said in a statement late Wednesday he had not heard from the White House about Comey's nomination but said Comey possessed a lot of important experience on national security issues.

"But, if he's nominated, he would have to answer questions about his recent work in the hedge fund industry," Grassley said. "The administration's efforts to criminally prosecute Wall Street for its part in the economic downturn have been abysmal, and his agency would have to help build the case against some of his colleagues."

Comey became a hero to Democrats for the central role he played in holding up Bush's warrantless wiretapping program, one of the administration's great controversies and an episode that focused attention on the administration's controversial tactics in the war on terror.

In stunning testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2007, Comey said he thought Bush's no-warrant wiretapping program was so questionable that Comey refused for a time to reauthorize it, leading to a standoff with White House officials at the bedside of ailing Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Comey said he refused to recertify the program because Ashcroft had reservations about its legality.

Senior government officials had expressed concerns about whether the National Security Agency, which administered the warrantless eavesdropping program, had the proper oversight in place. Other concerns included whether any president possessed the legal and constitutional authority to authorize the program as it was carried out at the time.

The White House, Comey said, recertified the program without the Justice Department's signoff, allowing it to operate for about three weeks without concurrence on whether it was legal. Comey, Ashcroft, Mueller and other Justice Department officials at one point considered resigning, Comey said.

"I couldn't stay if the administration was going to engage in conduct that the Department of Justice had said had no legal basis," Comey told the Senate panel.

A day after the March 10, 2004, incident at Ashcroft's hospital bedside, Bush ordered changes to the program to accommodate the department's concerns. Ashcroft signed the presidential order to recertify the program about three weeks later.

The dramatic hospital confrontation involved Comey, who was the acting attorney general during Ashcroft's absence, and a White House team that included Gonzales, Bush's counsel at the time, and White House chief of staff Andy Card, Comey said. Gonzales later succeeded Ashcroft as attorney general.

Comey testified that when he refused to certify the program, Gonzales and Card headed to Ashcroft's sick bed in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital.

When Gonzales appealed to Ashcroft, the ailing attorney general lifted his head off the pillow and in straightforward terms described his views of the program, Comey said. Then he pointed out that Comey, not Ashcroft, held the powers of the attorney general at that moment.

Gonzales and Card then left the hospital room, Comey said.

"I was angry," Comey told the panel. "I thought I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man who did not have the powers of the attorney general."

Comey was deputy attorney general in 2005, when he unsuccessfully tried to limit tough interrogation tactics against suspected terrorists. He told then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that some of the practices were wrong and would damage the department's reputation.

Some Democrats denounced those methods as torture, particularly the use of waterboarding, which produces the sensation of drowning.

Comey's selection was first reported by NPR and was not expected to be announced for several days at least. It was confirmed to the AP by three people speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the selection ahead of Obama's announcement. Senate confirmation will be needed.

The change in leadership at the FBI comes as the bureau and Justice Department are under scrutiny for their handing of several investigations. Obama has ordered a review of FBI investigations into leaks to reporters, including the secret gathering of Associated Press phone records and emails of a Fox News reporter. And there have been questions raised about whether the FBI properly responded to warnings from Russian authorities about a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. The agency, meanwhile, is conducting a highly anticipated investigation into the Internal Revenue Service over its handling of conservative groups seeking tax exempt status.

Earlier in his career, Comey served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the nation's most prominent prosecutorial offices and one at the front lines of terrorism, corporate malfeasance, organized crime and the war on drugs.

As an assistant U.S. attorney in Virginia, Comey handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers housing complex near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 U.S. military personnel.

He led the Justice Department's corporate fraud task force and spurred the creation of violent crime impact teams in 20 cities, focusing on crimes committed with guns.

Why James Rosen Is Not Blameless

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder delivers remarks during the Justice Department Inspector General's annual awards ceremony in the Great Hall at the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice building May 29, 2013 in Washington, DC.

As Eric Holder wrings his hands in remorse over his feverish pursuit of Fox News reporter James Rosen?s phone records, it?s worth noting that, when it comes to national security leaks, some things are secret?and should be kept that way?for a reason.

In Rosen?s case, the alarm bells went off not because he reported that North Korea was about to conduct a nuclear-weapons test but because he reported that the CIA learned of this fact from a source inside North Korea. In other words, Rosen revealed that the CIA had a source inside North Korea. It?s unclear whether the source was a human spy or a communications intercept; it?s also irrelevant because, thanks to this story, the source is probably no longer alive or active.

I?m not saying that Rosen should have been treated like a criminal; even Holder is backpedaling from that claim now. But he could have written his story without revealing that nugget about the inside source. The story might have been a little less compelling; his audience might have wondered how he or his official contacts knew that a test was coming. But the U.S. government might also still have a decent intelligence source inside North Korea.

It may seem odd for someone who has been reporting on national security matters for a few decades to say this, but just because the government is doing something in secret?and just because a leaker tells someone like me about it?that doesn?t necessarily mean it should see the light of day. That is especially so if the secret activity in question doesn?t break laws, expose deceit, kill people, violate basic decency, or ? (feel free to add to this list).

Serious journalists, even the most doggedly determined ones, have known this for a long time. That also isn?t to say that they should, or do, brood routinely over the consequences of their scoops; but some limits are obvious. For instance, it?s well known that the New York Times and other publications excised the names of certain people from WikiLeaks documents, especially foreign sources and translators, to keep them from being killed by Iraqi or Afghan insurgents.

It might be less well known that reporters have sometimes even refrained from publishing whole stories. Back in 1974, Seymour Hersh, then the Times? top investigative reporter, learned that the CIA was using the Glomar Explorer, a ship owned by Howard Hughes, to excavate a Soviet nuclear-missile submarine that had sunk in the Pacific Ocean. Hersh had broken some of the biggest stories of the day, including the My Lai massacre, CIA domestic surveillance, and the CIA?s involvement in a coup in Chile.* However, at the request of top officials, Hersh sat on the Glomar Explorer story. He realized that, in this case, secrecy was genuinely in the interests of national security. (The Times published Hersh?s story only after columnist Jack Anderson broke the news. Within days, the ship was surrounded by Soviet trawlers, and the mission was called off. It has never been revealed how much progress, if any, the Explorer had made in pulling up pieces of the Soviet sub.)

My only experience with this dilemma, as a defense reporter for the Boston Globe back in the 1980s, was hypothetical. One day, I received in the mail a manila envelope with no return address. It contained what appeared to be a very highly classified English translation of the Soviet nuclear war plan, complete with a summary of how many missiles and of what type were aimed at targets inside the United States. The document was stamped with the date of just one week earlier. In other words, if this thing was real, it meant that we had a spy deep inside the command of Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces who was feeding us up-to-date information.

That night, I brought the document over to the house of a good friend who worked in the CIA as a Soviet military-affairs analyst. His jaw tightened when he took a look at the thing, but then he relaxed. He told me that one of the classification codes at the top of the document hadn?t been used by the agency for a couple of years. Flipping through its pages, he found a few other mistaken designations as well. He concluded the document wasn?t real. (I?ve never learned who sent it or why.)

The next day I started to wonder what I would have done had the document been real. First, of course, I would have had to discuss it with my bureau chief and probably the paper?s editor; decisions like this are generally not left in the hands of a reporter in his early 30s. Had it been up to me, though, I would have written a story saying that U.S. intelligence officials believe such-and-such about the Soviet Union?s nuclear war plans. I would have summarized the gist of the document?what it indicated about the kinds of targets the Soviets were planning to hit (and not hit), the sequence of the attack, and a few other basic elements. I would not have gone into any details; for instance, I would not have recited how many SS-18 ICBMs were aimed at how many U.S. missile sites or bomber bases. And I certainly would not have said anything about the existence of this document, much less that the CIA had somehow obtained it only a few days earlier.

Some readers might have wondered how the ?U.S. intelligence analysts? that I cited knew what I reported they knew. Let them wonder, I would have shrugged. Better to leave them wondering than to blow an amazing intelligence source for the sake of a news story. This is only common sense, even to a young reporter. It should have been common sense to James Rosen, too.

Correction, May 29, 2013: This article originally credited New York Times reporter Seymour Hersh with the scoop on President Nixon's secret bombing of Cambodia. William Beecher, also of the New York Times, first reported that story. This example has been removed and replaced with another of Hersh's major scoops. (Return to the corrected sentence.)

Wrestling, baseball-softball and squash make list ? Artesia News

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? Wrestling, squash and baseball-softball made the IOC short list Wednesday for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics.

Three months after being dropped from the 2020 program, wrestling took a big step toward keeping its Olympic status.

Eight sports were vying for a single opening in the lineup.

Eliminated from contention were five sports ? karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu.

The IOC executive board will submit wrestling, squash and baseball-softball to the full IOC assembly for a final decision on Sept. 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

?It?s a good mix of team sports and individual,? IOC vice president Thomas Bach said.

The decision came after the eight sports federations made closed-door presentations to the IOC executive board.

Men?s baseball and women?s softball, which have been off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games, merged into a single federation to improve their chances.

Squash is bidding for an Olympic spot for a third time.

Wrestling, with a tradition dating to the ancient Olympics, was surprisingly cut from the list of core sports by the IOC board in February. The decision caused an international outcry and prompted the United States, Russia, Iran and other countries to join forces in a bid to bring the sport back.

Pentagon programs target of China cyber threat

(AP) ? New revelations that China used cyberattacks to access data from nearly 40 Pentagon weapons programs and almost 30 other defense technologies have increased pressure on U.S. leaders to take more strident action against Beijing to stem the persistent breaches.

The disclosure, which was included in a Defense Science Board report released earlier this year, but is only now being discussed publicly, comes as Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel heads to Southeast Asia, where he will discuss the escalating cyberthreat with counterparts from a number of area nations.

While officials have been warning for years about China's cyber espionage efforts aimed at U.S. military and high-tech programs, the breadth of the list underscored how routine the attacks have become. And, as the U.S. looks to grow its military presence in the Asia Pacific, it heightens worries that China can use the information to blunt America's military superiority and keep pace with emerging technologies.

"It introduces uncertainty on how well the weapons may work, and it means we may have to redo weapons systems," said James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "If they know how it works precisely, they will be able to evade it and figure out how to better beat our systems."

A chart included in the science board's report laid out what it called a partial list of 37 breached programs, which included the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense weapon ? a land-based missile defense system that was recently deployed to Guam to help counter the North Korean threat. Other programs include the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the F-22 Raptor fighter jet, and the hybrid MV-22 Osprey, which can take off and land like a helicopter and fly like an airplane.

The report also listed another 29 broader defense technologies that have been compromised, including drone video systems and high-tech avionics. The information was gathered more than two years ago, so some of the data is dated and a few of the breaches ? such as the F-35 ? had actually already become public.

The details of the breaches were first reported by The Washington Post.

According to a defense official, the report is based on more than 50 briefings that members of the board's task force received from senior leaders in the Pentagon, the State Department, the intelligence community, national laboratories and business. The official was not authorized to discuss the report publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

U.S. officials have been far more open about discussing the China cyberattacks over the past year or two, beginning with a November 2011 report by U.S. intelligence agencies that accused China of systematically stealing American high-tech data for its own national economic gain. The Pentagon, meanwhile, in its latest report on China's military power, asserted publicly for the first time that Beijing's military was likely behind computer-based attacks targeting federal agencies.

"In 2012, numerous computer systems around the world, including those owned by the U.S. government, continued to be targeted for intrusions, some of which appear to be attributable directly to the Chinese government and military," said the report, which was released earlier this month.

Cybersecurity experts have for some time been urging the government to use sanctions or other punishments against China for the breaches.

The benefits to the cyber espionage are high and the costs are low, said Shawn Henry, former cyber director at the FBI and now president of CrowdStrike Services, a security technology company.

"There is no cost, there are no sanctions, no diplomatic actions, no financial disincentives," said Henry, adding that the U.S. intellectual property losses are in the hundreds of millions of dollars. He said that the U.S. needs to have a discussion with Chinese leaders about "what the red lines are and what the repercussions will be for crossing those red lines."

U.S. leaders, including President Barack Obama, however, have instead been using the bully pulpit to increase pressure on the Chinese to confront the problem. Obama is expected to raise the issue with China's new leader Xi Jinping during a summit next month in Southern California.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said Tuesday that the Pentagon maintains "full confidence in our weapons platforms," adding that the department has taken a number of steps to strengthen its network defenses and monitor for threats.

Defense contractors, meanwhile, declined to say whether their systems had been breached. But recent filings to shareholders indicate these companies see intrusions as a serious risk to their business, particularly when they must rely on third-party suppliers.

In its most recent annual report, Lockheed Martin ? a primary contractor on missile defense programs ? told shareholders that prior cyberattacks "have not had a material impact on our financial results," and that it believed its security efforts were adequate.

However, suppliers and subcontractors have "varying levels of cybersecurity expertise and safeguards and their relationships with government contractors, such as Lockheed Martin may increase the likelihood that they are targeted by the same cyber threats we face," according to the 2012 report.

In a statement emailed to reporters on Tuesday, Lockheed Martin said it has made "significant investments" in cybersecurity and that the company was trying to secure its supply chain given that "program information resides in a large cyber ecosystem."

Similar risk disclosures to shareholders have been made recently by Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Raytheon. For example, Northrop Grumman wrote in its 2012 annual report that cyber intrusions "could damage our reputation and lead to financial losses from remedial actions, loss of business or potential liability."

Company spokesman Randy Belote on Tuesday declined to say whether Northrop Grumman's systems had been breached, citing company policy. But, he added, "the number of attempts to breach our networks (is) increasing at an alarming rate."

Judge orders physical exam for accused Fort Hood gunman

By Karen Brooks and Jim Forsyth

FORT HOOD, Texas (Reuters) - A U.S. military court judge on Wednesday ordered a physical exam for accused Fort Hood gunman Major Nidal Hasan before she decides whether Hasan will be allowed to represent himself at his trial this summer.

During a 40-minute pre-trial hearing at Fort Hood, Col. Tara Osborn said that a mental health evaluation showed that Hasan was mentally capable of running his own defense, but she had doubts whether he was physically able to withstand the rigors of representing himself.

She set the next hearing for Monday to give doctors time to examine Hasan, issue a report, and be ready to testify. Osborn declined to rule on any other matters until the issue of his defense was resolved.

Hasan could face the death penalty on charges he killed 13 people in a 2009 shooting rampage if convicted of premeditated murder. Jury selection in his military trial was delayed until next week after he asked the judge to let him fire his lawyers. The trial is scheduled to start July 1.

Hasan arrived in court Wednesday looking pale and drawn, wearing camouflage military fatigues, an Army green stocking cap, and a full beard and mustache. He removed the cap before the court proceedings began, revealing a shaved head.

Hasan answered questions in a soft-spoken voice, occasionally consulting with his attorneys.

He did not say why he wanted to fire the legal team.

Hasan is accused of opening fire on a group of soldiers who were preparing to deploy to Iraq in November 2009 in the worst shooting rampage on a U.S. military post. In addition to the 13 people who died, 32 others were wounded. Two civilian Fort Hood police officers shot Hasan, leaving the Army psychiatrist paralyzed from the chest down.

Osborn said Wednesday that defending oneself is "much more taxing" than sitting there helping his defense attorneys, as it requires additional work outside the courtroom. Hasan's defense attorneys have said in previous hearings that he is only able to withstand about five hours of sitting in court per day.

The last time Hasan had a complete physical exam was in June 2012, Osborn said. An exam scheduled earlier in the month was delayed due to a lack of government funding for the doctor, Osborn said, offering no further explanation.

Hasan said he had no objection to a doctor at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center performing his exam but was adamant that it not be given by the head of the rehabilitation department, with whom he said he had a "previous experience" while he worked there.

He declined to elaborate, and Osborn did not ask for details.

Osborn told the defense team, led by Col. Kris Poppe, that they would remain Hasan's attorneys until she made her ruling.

"This is not familiar territory," Poppe said, adding that his client clearly did not want them. "Obviously, it's something we'll have to tread carefully."

Military law experts said allowing Hasan to represent himself could make his court martial more open to appeals and more painful for the witnesses or victims he questions.

"It is hard enough for the victim of an attempted murder or the family member of someone who has been murdered, to come into a courtroom and sit across the room from a man who they are convinced did this," said Geoffrey Corn, a retired lieutenant colonel and veteran Army prosecutor.

Osborn has sought to get the trial on track after delays caused by a debate over whether Hasan, who is a Muslim, should be required to shave his beard to comply with military rules. Osborn set the issue aside and Hasan has continued to appear in court with a full beard.

Hasan has said little about what motivated the shootings, but an FBI-commissioned report in 2012 said he had exchanged emails with militant Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in the year before the attack, and witnesses said they heard him shout in Arabic "God is greatest" just before opening fire at Fort Hood.

Awlaki, a U.S. citizen born in New Mexico, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011.

Christie has absolute confidence in Rutgers leader

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Gov. Chris Christie says he has "absolute confidence" in the president of Rutgers University as he deals with questions about his choice for the university's new athletic director.

Speaking on a monthly radio show Tuesday, Christie said Robert Barchi is the "right man for the job." Christie also says it's not his job to micromanage Rutgers' business.

Barchi has been criticized for his choice of Julie Hermann as athletic director this month. Former players on the University of Tennessee volleyball team she coached in the 1990s have said she verbally and emotionally abused them.

Stock Brokers in India ? How to choose the right one for yourself ...

India suffers from poor growth, high inflation, high current account deficit, high fiscal deficit and of course a constantly choose a stock brokerweakening rupee. The gold prices have burst their bubble, and silver is no good either. The banks and post office PPFs and fixed deposits are hardly giving 7 percent interest per annum. So, how to beat inflation in such a dismal scenario? How to make sure the money earned by the sweat of your brow does not lose its sheen? The answer to that lies in leveraging the benefits of the stock market.

The first question that must come to your mind is ? What is a stock market? Whom to buy the stocks from? After all, stocks are not road side hamburgers sold by McDonald?s. It surely isn?t rocket science. Well, you know what, they are just like hamburgers. A stock market is a place where you can buy or sell different financial instruments. One example would be Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), I expect you must have heard the name. To facilitate the buy/sell process, you need the help of Stock brokerages. The problem begins once you know that you need a stock broker. There are many of them, but only a couple of them might be relevant. Which one to choose? You will obviously ask for people who have used both of them. To narrow down to the right broker, you need to asses a string of factors before you decide which broker to buy stocks from.

But before deep diving into it, I would ask you to write the amount you are ready to invest in the market on a paper. Remember this amount should be the ?Risk Capital?, which, if you lose should not affect your current life-style. You should keep in mind that the market is volatile and there is a probability that you might end up losing all or majority of this money.

?

Based on the money at your disposal, you can opt for one of these two categories of brokers:

1.????Full Service Broker: Big players (in the range of Rs 1 million) go to such brokers. These brokers give their customers one-to-one investment advice on buying stocks, which is backed by an extensive research team, usually in-house. Like all good things in the world, their services don?t come free and they charge a hefty amount. Examples are RK Global, SMC etc.

?

2.? Discount Brokers: They charge reduced commissions compared to their counterparts and do not provide one-to-one advice. Nowadays, however, they too are backed up by their own research team which offers quality information on their trading platform.

The various parameters that one needs to keep in mind while choosing a discount broker:

1.????? Account Minimum: Most brokers posit that you start with a minimum balance, which might range from as low as Rs 0 to as high as Rs 1,00,000. Like most people with moderate IQ, you must have already guessed it?s better to choose a broker with least deposit.

?

2.??? Research: ?A little knowledge is never wasted, so right information about the right market mobilization at the right time is worth gold ringlets. So while you must do some homework research yourself, it is always advisable to take the help of a broker with excellent reputation and backed up by impeccable research. Some brokers have excellent research teams, both in-house and third party.

?

3.??? Cash or Margin Account: There are two broad subdivisions of brokerage accounts: Cash and Margin. While cash account settles the transactions on a cash basis, the Margin account lends the customer cash to purchase securities. The loan in the account is collateralized by securities and cash. New investors should not venture into Margin accounts where risks of clocking losses are higher, which will act as a dampener to his/her investment exuberance.

?

?

4.???? Deposit & Withdrawal: While depositing money into brokerage accounts is relatively easy, the withdrawal is not that smooth. You must have the facility of withdrawal of money as and when you please. Some brokers charge fees for the withdrawal. You must have a holistic understanding of the various fees involved in the transactions.

?

5.????? Fees & Commissions: Hidden prices are the red herrings to look out for, as it is one of the most important factors affecting your decision. You should understand the fee structure and the level of activity that may be required to qualify for the lowest commissions. You should also acquire in-depth knowledge about the fee structure.

?

6.????? Investment Products: You should watch out for other vehicles of investment offered by the stock broker. These include Options, Bonds, CDs, Mutual Funds, etc.

?

7.???? Customer Service: You can easily get frustrated with the broker in times of need and when you have questions which need answers. In general the presales and post sales customer service is different and one must check the customer service.

?

8.????? Trading platform: All the trades are communicated and executed via the trading platform. The execution speed is a thing to note. A cheap broker might not provide high standards of service. Slow responding platforms affect the P&L and it?s not worth to use an unstable trading platform.

?

9.???? Review and Ratings: Best thing is to learn and then learn some more. Knowledge is never wasted. You can learn from web resources, individual trader experiences. Check out the Review of Stock Brokers. You must also look at the user review and comments to get a subjective opinion.

If you followed the article till here, I hope that your understanding must have improved. You are in a better position to select the right broker for yourself.

Google Taking ?Wireless Blimp Networks? To Africa And Beyond

Google is quietly working with telecommunications companies and governments in developing countries in a wide-ranging plan to vastly expand the reach of the Internet, using technologies including blimp- and satellite-based networks, according a report.

The search engine?s plans reportedly include the deployment of wireless networks in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia that would target potential users outside of large cities, as well as networks that would improve urban Internet speeds.

One billion new users

The project, coordinated by the ?access? unit of the company?s secret Google X lab and its non-profit arm Google.org, aims to connect at least one billion more people to the Internet, thus boosting demand for Google?s services and its advertising network, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Google-Logo-On-WallThe plans derive from research driven by Google chief executive Larry Page into alternative methods for providing Internet access, and these plans have recently become ?more serious?, according to the report, which cited unnamed sources.

Google plans to retain at least some direct control over the envisioned access networks, the report said. Google has taken this approach to mobile devices in creating the widely-used Android operating system and acquiring Motorola Mobility, and is also building its own fibre-optic networks beginning with the Google Fibre project in the US state of Kansas.

Google has also moved into web access software with its popular Chrome browser and is developing a head-mounted access device called Google Glass.

Broad approach

The access strategy reportedly does not rely on a single technology, but aims rather to deploy different approaches depending on local conditions. The company is reportedly planning to work with local telecommunications firms and equipment providers, but it was unclear whether such alliances have already been formed.

The techniques Google is investigating reportedly include the use of balloonm or blimp-based platforms, for transmitting wireless signals across large areas and the creation of a satellite-based network. Google has filed patent applications related to such airborne systems in the past, including a 2000 application related to a ?high-altitude platform? used as the basis for a ?communications system?.

The search engine would like to use spectrum reserved for television broadcasts in some areas, and is in talks with governments in areas including South Africa and Kenya to bring about the regulatory changes that would allow it to use this spectrum, according to the report.

The company is also reportedly working to build low-cost, Android-based smartphones to connect to these planned networks.

Google declined to comment on the matter.

Google?s push to broaden Internet acccess has been accompanied by aggressive campaigning against organisations and regulations that it argues would limit access to its services.

The company continues to trial experimental access technology. For instance, in January Google sought the approval of the US? Federal Communications Commission for trials of an experimental wireless network using indoor and outdoor base stations to provide access over a two-mile radius.

It has disclosed plans to expand the Google Fibre network to locations including Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah, and last year held talks with US satellite TV provider Dish Network on building a wireless broadband network in the United States.

Retail solar co. fights utility bills in New Mexico

  • The business will compete directly with utility electricity by providing solar energy for less than the cost of monthly electricity bills.
  • For example, Affordable Solar would lease a 4.5-kilowatt residential solar system, typical for a 3 bedroom home, that would cost $79 a month with no upfront cost. Without a lease, that same system would cost a resident $18,000. Currently, 75% of Americans have access to solar energy through a solar lease, the company reports.

Real Estate Careers And Their Designations - Investopedia

Whether you are an entrepreneur or plan on working for an established company, the real estate industry offers a wide variety of career opportunities including those in brokerages and leasing services for homes, office buildings, industrial properties and farmland, as well as property management, appraisal and counseling. Here, we take a look at a selection of the career paths in real estate, including some of the relevant professional designations and certifications for each profession.

Residential Real Estate
Residential real estate sales agents help people throughout the process of buying and selling homes. In addition to showing homes to prospective buyers, agents help clients with property valuation, financing, mortgages and government programs. Agents and brokers must be licensed in the state in which they work (there is no "national" license). Each state has its own licensing system and requirements that include some type of pre-licensing course and a state-specific licensing examination.

Designations and Certifications:

  • Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR) - Awarded by REBAC (the Real Estate BUYER'S Agent Council of the National Association of REALTORS?), the ABR designation is designed for real estate agents who focus on working directly with buyer-clients. Candidates must complete a two-day course and successfully pass an exam to achieve ARB candidate status. During the following three-year period, candidates fulfill additional requirements for education and experience before becoming an ABR Designee.
  • Accredited Seller Representative (ASR) - Awarded by the Accredited Seller Agency Council, the ASR designation is designed for real estate agents who focus on working directly with seller-clients. Candidates must complete a 12 hour course, pass an exam, show proof of five closed sides of transactions where the candidate represented sellers, provide three letters of recommendation from three of those sellers, and be members of the National Association of REALTORS?.
Commercial Real Estate
Commercial agents and brokers specialize in income-producing properties, such as retail stores, shopping centers, office buildings, industrial parks and apartment complexes. Commercial real estate professionals help clients evaluate a property's income potential and offer guidance regarding local zoning and tax laws. Some states require a specialized license for commercial transactions, while others cover residential and commercial transactions under the same license.

Designations and Certifications:

  • Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) - The CCIM designation is awarded by the CCIM Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS?. CCIM candidates must complete a curriculum that includes ethics, interest-based negotiation, financial analysis, market analysis, user decision analysis and investment analysis for commercial investment real estate. In addition, candidates are required to submit a portfolio that demonstrates their commercial real estate experience and successfully complete an examination.
  • Certified Commercial Real Estate Advisor (CCREA) - The CCREA designation is awarded by the National Association of Commercial Real Estate Professionals (NAOCREP). CCREA candidates must complete a curriculum that includes multifamily asset class analysis, cash flow and equity projection and analysis, loan analysis and procurement, commercial foreclosure and short sale strategies, financial analysis and negotiation. The CCREA designation is awarded to candidates who successfully complete a comprehensive three-day live course and examination.
Property Management
Property managers maintain properties that produce financial returns for the property owners and are responsible for the maintenance and management of the property, including budgeting and leasing. Residential property management involves apartment buildings, condominiums and vacation rentals. Commercial property management entails properties such as office buildings and shopping centers. Property managers often work for real estate firms. Most states require a real estate license for property managers who collect rent, list properties or negotiate leases.

Designations and Certifications:

  • Certified Property Manager (CPM) - The CPM designation is awarded by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). A CPM candidate must hold an active real estate license (where required), be a member of IREM, complete seven required courses (or equivalent education/experience), pass the CPM certification exam, complete IREM ethics education, submit three letters of recommendation, have three years of qualifying real estate management experience and be affiliated with National Association of REALTORS?.

ARM candidates must complete a week long course or complete four individual courses (or hold a CPM, CAM, CRM or RAM designation or have qualifying education/experience), pass the ARM certification exam, complete IREM ethics education and have one year of qualifying residential real estate management experience.

Appraisers must know acceptable appraisal principles, have practical experience and some knowledge of mathematics, accounting and economics. Often, appraisers work for banks or for appraiser firms. Appraisers must be licensed by the state in which they work. You must first become an Appraiser Trainee by completing state-specified coursework. With additional coursework and experience, you can go on to become a Licensed Residential Appraiser, a Certified Residential Appraiser and a Certified General Appraiser.

MAIs must hold an undergraduate degree from a four-year accredited institution, complete 400 hours of classroom instruction and pass a series of examinations, successfully take the General Comprehensive Examination, a two-day, four-part exam, and show evidence of 4,500 hours of specialized experience over at least a three-year period.
Real Estate Counseling
Real estate counselors give advice about property and help investors make decisions about how to select properties that are likely to appreciate in price in the future. Rather than selling real estate, counselors focus on each client's unique needs to offer solutions that address those needs. Counselors (also called real estate advisors) must know many facets of the real estate business. Often, real estate counselors have a background in real estate valuation, development, investing and/or property management.

Designations and Certifications:

  • Counselor Real Estate (CRE) - The CRE designation is awarded by the Counselors of Real Estate, and is available only to individuals who have been invited by their peers into membership. Through the CRE Invitation Process, candidates must show evidence of at least 10 years of real estate experience (three of which must be in counseling), demonstrate that they are recognized by clients and peers for their professional knowledge, integrity and judgment, have attained REALTOR? designations such as CCIM, CPM, GRI and SIOR and hold advanced degrees in business and related fields.

The real estate industry is robust, with numerous career opportunities. This article names only a few of the many career paths currently available. Other real estate career opportunities include:
  • Construction
  • Farm and land brokerage
  • Investment
  • Land development
  • Research
  • Urban planning
Real estate designations and certifications can help you increase your skills, proficiency, knowledge and, ultimately, your marketability as a real estate professional. In addition to those listed here, there are dozens of other designations and certifications to show your experience and expertise the various real estate sectors.

Kuchar still leads at Colonial after long Saturday

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Matt Kuchar finished a long Saturday at Colonial exhausted and still a stroke in front.

"This morning feels like a day ago," Kuchar said. "It's hard to believe it's the same day."

After making a 12-foot birdie putt at the par-3 16th hole, the same place where his day began at 7:13 a.m. to finish the suspended second round, Kuchar had two nifty par-savers to finish a 1-under 69 in the third round. He was at 11-under 199, one ahead of Graham DeLaet, Boo Weekley, Chris Stroud and Matt Every.

When the second round was suspended Friday night because of an approaching storm, Kuchar had just hit his tee shot at the par-3 16th. He resumed there early Saturday with a two-putt from about 40 feet. That was part of three quick pars to keep his one-stroke lead after two rounds, then he played in the final group that finished just after 5 p.m.

Kuchar made his go-ahead stroke in the third round at No. 16 ? after falling behind by as many as two strokes ? before his approach shot at the 379-yard 17th landed in a greenside bunker. He blasted to 13 feet and saved par before hooking his tee shot at No. 18 into the left rough. He found more tall grass near the green with his second shot before pitching inside 3 feet.

"To not give away a stroke and maintain a one-shot lead is a good position to be in. Everybody has got to come get me," Kuchar said. "Not only a bunch of players, but a bunch of good players up there. ... I'm looking forward to having the lead and seeing if I can maintain it, and my goal will be to grow the lead."

Weekly, even with problems maintaining focus in his left eye, and Every shot third-round 66s. Stroud had a 67 and DeLaet, playing with Kuchar, had three back-nine bogeys before a birdie at No. 18 for a 69.

Ranked No. 13 in the world ? the highest in the field ? Kuchar started the third round with a birdie at the easy par-5 first hole. At the 458-yard third hole, his 8-foot birdie attempt rolled over the cup without falling, ending his streak of 34 consecutive made putts under 10 feet this week at Hogan's Alley.

Kuchar missed another short one, a 5-foot par putt after blasting out of a greenside bunker at the seventh hole. He then missed the green on at the par-3 eighth and bogeyed again, putting him 9 under and two strokes behind DeLaet, the 31-year-old Canadian looking for his first PGA Tour victory.

"I felt like they were easy up-and-downs," Kuchar said. "I was glad to bounce back."

DeLaet was at 12 under after he and Kuchar both had birdies at the par-5 11th hole before his bogeys at Nos. 13, 14 and 17.

Kuchar won the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February, and will try Sunday to join Tiger Woods as the only multiple winners on the PGA Tour this season. Kuchar is a five-time winner, but never has won twice in the same season.

There could be a lot of competition in the final round at Colonial, where 12 players are within three strokes of the lead. That dozen includes defending champion Zach Johnson, who also won in 2010, at 202.

Johnson shot 68, his 18th time under par his last 19 rounds at Hogan's Alley. The lone exception being his closing 72 last year that included a two-stroke penalty. Five-time winner Ben Hogan is the only player to win Colonial more than twice.

"Certainly the confidence of playing well here is something I'm going to try to lean on," Johnson said.

Weekley, who has won twice but not since 2008, had gotten to 10 under during his second round Friday when he made consecutive birdies after making his turn. But he had a late four-hole stretch with a double bogey and two bogeys. He was back at 10 under Saturday with consecutive birdies at Nos. 11 and 12, and was still there after an up-and-down finish.

"When we got done playing (Friday), I went out to the range and practiced a little bit and focused back on what we are here to do , and that's win and play the best we can," Weekley said.

There was a bogey at the 14th when he missed the fairway with his tee shot and the green with his approach, but he made a 6-foot birdie at No. 15. He missed a 5-foot par chance at No. 16, but finished with a birdie after his approach inside 3 feet at the closing hole.

After having problems reading greens in recent tournaments, Weekley this week went to doctor to have his left eye checked. But he still hasn't found out what the problem is.

"I get like a real bad twitch when I'm trying to focus on something, especially staring down on the ball," Weekley said. "It's happened, I'd say probably 15-20 times so far this week."
