A final session of Walter White's 'Bad' behavior

NEW YORK (AP) ? Any "Breaking Bad " fan could be forgiven for concluding that Sunday's finale held no major surprises.

That's because this AMC drama series has delivered surprises, shock and OMG moments dependably since its premiere five seasons ago.

Just like it did on its final episode.

For those who don't want to be reading how yet, stop reading! And let's take a few moments for you who aren't ready to find out what happened to tear your eyes away from this article.

OK. Ready?

The finale closed the loop on a scene that began Season 5, and found Walt (series star Bryan Cranston) with a beard and a full head of hair at an Albuquerque, N.M., Denny's restaurant. There he made a swap for a different car than the Volvo he had stolen and driven cross-country from New Hampshire, where, until the final moments of last week's episode, he was holed up, a most-wanted fugitive from the law. More to the point, Walt in that deal at the Denny's men's room became the owner of a very serious rifle.

The scene, flashing forward several months ahead to Walt's 52nd birthday, was no less tantalizing than bewildering to viewers when it aired. On the finale, it revealed itself as a key piece of the series' finished puzzle.

As the finale began, Walt ? cancer-stricken and a hunted man ? was headed back home to Albuquerque for a last showdown.

In a byzantine and sinister arrangement with the couple who had become tycoons from a pharmaceutical company Walt co-founded but received no benefit from, Walt made sure his children would get the $10 million drug money he left behind with the couple ? or else.

Walt then dropped in on his estranged wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), who had made it plain she hated him.

"Why are you here?" she asked him coldly.

"It's over," he said, "and I needed a proper goodbye."

After all this time, he justified out loud his descent from life as a meek, ill-paid chemistry teacher to a life as a legendary drug lord. Before, he had always insisted he did it for his family, to leave them provided for after his death from his terminal cancer.

"I did it for me," he declared to Skyler. "I liked it. I was good at it. And I was alive."

Walt's former meth-cooking sidekick, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), was still enslaved to a group of bad guys forcing him to cook crystal-meth for them using the laboratory-pristine process Walt had pioneered and prospered with. Walt rescued Jesse: His assault rifle mowed down the bad guys by remote control from the trunk of his car.

Freed, Jesse was last seen speeding off, screaming in hysteria, rage and gratitude. Against all odds, he had lived to face another day.

For Walt, the outcome was much different. As the cops descended at the scene of the mass slaughter to seize him, he was lying on the floor, dead, apparently from a stray bullet from his own rifle. An inadvertent suicide, he had successfully escaped from the law, his foes and the cancer that was stalking him.

And, yes, Walt used the ricin he had held in reserve for ages. He poisoned Lydia Rodarte-Quayle, who had shown the bad judgment to collude with Walt's enemies on more than one occasion. He substituted it for the sweetener she thought she was putting in her tea.

The episode, and series, ended with Badfinger's "Baby Blue" ("Guess I got what I deserve").

So did viewers, with a finale that was surprising in its relative lack of carnage, that tied up loose ends and seemed organically fitting, however outlandish at times ("Breaking Bad" never insisted on stark realism).

Written and directed by Vince Gilligan, the series' creator, this series went out as it came in, and stayed: wicked, twisted and wildly creative. Certified with its conclusion as perhaps the best TV drama series of all time, "Breaking Bad" remained as pure a product as the crystal meth Walt White cooked, to his peril and demise.

Canada's Harvest Drilling Finds 5.9M Barrels Oil Reserves - KNOC

SEOUL, Sept 29 (Reuters) ? State-run Korea National Oil Corp (KNOC) said on Sunday its loss-making subsidiary Harvest Operations had found at least 5.9 million barrels of crude oil in a Canadian well where it began drilling earlier this month.

The oil well, now worth $470 million, is in the northwestern Canadian mining area of Royce, KNOC said in a statement. KNOC fully owns Harvest Operations.

The well is producing the equivalent of 800 barrels per day of combined oil and gas, the statement said. Another 30 or 40 drilling sites could be developed, the statement said.

That included Harvest-owned sites in the Deep Basin and Loon regions, the statement said.

KNOC also plans to invest heavily in shale gas in the Muskwa region, together with oil sand in the Black Gold mine as part of Harvest's non-conventional crude oil sector.

Last week, the state-run oil company announced it was considering whether to sell "non-core parts" of Harvest.

KNOC bought the Canadian oil and gas trust for $1.7 billion in 2009. Harvest reported a net loss of C$720 million in 2012.

Harvest's upstream sector recorded operating profits of C$3 million ($2.91 million) last year, despite production failures caused by natural disasters.

Ensure that individual projects work together for a home that looks ...

Prioritize certain improvements. You know that there are several areas of your home that need changes, but you don?t want to do all the projects at once. So where should you begin? Use your master plan to determine the possibilities and assess your priorities.

Often a master plan can help you estimate prices for different project areas in your home; that way you can proceed based on your budget at the time. Maybe you need to tackle the kitchen first, and the master bedroom will have to wait. Either way, keeping the big picture in mind means that everything will work together in the end.

Here's who might not be happy about Netflix's 'Super HD' video ...

Hey, what?s that up in the vividly detailed sky displayed on your enormous HDTV?s screen? Look! It?s an incredibly crisp-looking bird ? it?s a vibrantly colorful plane ? no, it?s Netflix?s Super HD video streaming!

Yes, that?s right folks, Netflix announced today that all of its 30 million domestic subscribers will now be able to access movies and TV shows in the Super HD 1080p video format. Super HD, which is the highest quality video format offered by Netflix, is likely called ?Super HD? because it?s far more memorably to nontech people (like my mom) who only understand that the movie they?re watching isn?t as detailed and crisp as it could be.

It?s worth noting that not every video in Netflix?s library is available in the Super HD format, such as campy ?80s teenage rom-com films, Good Burger, and other awesomely bad films and TV series originally produced more than a decade ago.

Super HD, which launched back in January, was only available to Netflix members that were using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that agreed to join the company?s Open Connect Network. The Open Connect Network is a really good thing for ISPs, too. It essentially helps ISPs minimize the massive strain Netflix puts on their overall network (thus speeding up the entire connection for everyone) and saves them money by reducing their reliance on third-party distribution services like Level 3. It also doesn?t cost ISPs anything ? making it a bigger risk not to use the Open Connect Network.

Still, that didn?t stop some major ISPs from declining.

Time Warner Cable was among those that decided not to join Netflix?s Open Connect, thus denying all their customers access to the best quality video streams when watching movies and TV shows.

TWC?s explanation for not joining was that it doesn?t need Netflix?s help because its technology for managing Internet traffic was more than capable of handling the strain of Super HD streaming ? despite Netflix accounting for over a third of all downstream web traffic in the country at peak usage times. (TWC then made the wild accusation that Netflix was holding their customers hostage by denying them the Super HD streaming due to the ISP?s disagreement. It also suggested that Netflix was trying to make themselves an exception to Net Neutrality by asking for special treatment, which is not at all true.)

But as of today?s member-wide Super HD roll out, there are now zero ?hostages? ? thank the gods.

Netflix, however, did point out that members using an ISP that still hadn?t joined the Open Connect won?t be able to get the optimum experience when accessing Super HD-quality videos.

And if you decipher that forced-smile-of-a-statement, it basically means ISPs like TWC could be slower overall during peak Internet usage times now that Super HD is enabled for everyone. Also, it means the likelihood of maintaining a Super HD-quality video stream on ISPs like TWC will be much lower. Fortunately, Netflix?s technology automatically adjusts to lower quality video formats based on the Internet connection (aka adaptive streaming), so you shouldn?t have to deal with videos stopping to buffer constantly.

Asia stocks down as US faces budget battle

BANGKOK (AP) ? Uncertainty about the U.S. Federal Reserve's next step and the potential for a budget showdown in Washington sent Asia stock markets lower Tuesday.

Investors initially celebrated when the U.S. Federal Reserve said last week it would refrain from cutting back its massive economic stimulus program. The $85 billion in monthly asset purchases by the Fed helped pump life into the economy and stock markets, but enthusiasm has waned as the reasoning behind the decision ? that the U.S. economy is weak ? began to sink in.

Still, the central bank is still expected to scale back its purchases at one of its upcoming meetings ? in late October, in mid-December or sometime early next year, so "tapering" isn't off the table quite yet.

"That is still hanging over markets. If they had tapered, people would have moved on from there," said Daniel Martin of Capital Economics in Singapore. "Investors have to factor in the Fed doing this all over again."

Evan Lucas, market strategist at IG in Melbourne, Australia, said rallies across the globe, including record highs on Wall Street, have left markets struggling to find a reason to head higher.

"The run has been well supported and the more steam it has gathered the more it has sucked in funds from underperforming sources such as money markets and bond markets," Lucas said in an email commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.4 percent to 14,687.41. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.1 percent to 23,124.34. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.5 percent to 5,227.60. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.7 percent to 1,995.90.

Benchmarks in mainland China, the Philippines and Indonesia fell. Thailand and New Zealand rose.

The approaching budget battle between the White House and Republican lawmakers also threw an element of uncertainty at markets. The government will reach its borrowing limit, or debt ceiling, by Oct. 1. If Congress doesn't raise that limit, the government won't be able to pay all its bills.

Republicans are demanding that any increase must result in expenditure cuts of an equal amount. President Barack Obama is demanding a debt limit increase with no conditions attached.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.3 percent to close at 15,401.38. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.5 percent to 1,701.84. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.3 percent, to 3,765.29.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was down 7 cents to $103.52 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.16 to close at $103.59 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro was unchanged at $1.3493 from late Monday. The dollar rose to 98.81 yen from 98.78 yen.

The African American Film Critics Association Internship Program Launches at Clark Atlanta University

The Mass Media Arts Department at Clark Atlanta University (CAU) has formally adopted an academic internship program facilitated by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) to train future journalists in the film and entertainment industry. Beginning this fall 2013 semester, the program, available only to junior and senior level students, represents the first academic partnership between AAFCA and an institution of higher learning.

?We are excited about this collaboration with AAFCA and our campus,? says Dr. Kandace Harris, associate professor and chair of the Department of Mass Media Arts at CAU. ?Members of the association have a long history of engaging our students, so we look forward to the new opportunities that this formal internship partnership will bring.?

Mass Media Arts students Ariana Pyles and Shatondra Caldwell were selected for the program and will earn academic credits for their work over the course of the fall semester. Caldwell said, ?I am so excited to be a part of AAFCA?s Internship Program and look forward to the learning opportunities that this experience will bring.? Caldwell and Pyles will assist the organization?s production team in creating segments to be shown during the annual AAFCA Awards Show on Friday, Jan. 31, at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, Calif. The two students also will contribute movie reviews on behalf of AAFCA that will be disseminated via the association?s online content relationship with Radio One stations across the country and serve as award show ?online ambassadors.?

Edward Adams, AAFCA member, online manager for Creative Loafing magazine and co-supervisor of the program, said, ?We are thrilled to begin this program at a historically black

institution such as Clark Atlanta University, with its strong Mass Media Arts legacy. Our support of African-American youth interested in careers in the media will give them the training, experience and confidence that will add value as they develop their careers.?

Where Millennials should look for work

Much ink has been spilled on the burgeoning ranks of debt-saddled job-seeking Millennials. So where are the best places for recent grads to seek work? Richard Florida has compiled an online list for The Atlantic.

Logically, the nation?s largest metro areas (like New York and Los Angeles) have the most job openings in high-growth fields that require postsecondary education. But the number of job openings doesn?t necessarily equal job prospects, so Mr. Florida compared these figures with national averages.

High-tech regions like Silicon Valley shot to the top of the list. Known innovation hubs like Boston; Washington, D.C.; and Seattle were joined by Austin, Texas; and Raleigh, N.C. More notable is that Hartford, Conn.; Detroit; and Baltimore all made the Top 10. ?Rust Belt metros? like Pittsburgh and Cleveland also fare well.

Florida says these metros ?have a lot to offer highly educated recent grads: affordable housing, a low cost of living, authentic neighborhoods, and revitalizing cores? as well as jobs. Though largely written-off by educated 20-somethings, they ?deserve a closer look.?

How the Internet flexes its heart

The Internet has (unsurprisingly) given a boost to philanthropy. Worth looking at, however, is the way in which causes go viral. Matt Petronzio of Mashable.com has distilled some of that analysis by highlighting an infographic from eBay Deals and eBay Giving Works that lists ?16 ways the Internet has proved it has a heart.?

In each example, a cause gained buzz through social media sites like Facebook, Reddit, and Tumblr and then linked to campaigns on crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo, Fundly, and GoFundMe. Mr. Petronzio mentioned a few standouts: the video of bullied bus monitor Karen Huff Klein posted on Reddit that inspired donations in excess of $500,000; the ?Humans of New York? collaboration with Tumblr that raised more than $300,000 for hurricane Sandy relief; and numerous campaigns to help victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Also included on the infographic are initiatives for cancer patients, a homeless man, and a World War II veteran, as well as those affected by the 2013 tornado that struck Moore, Okla., and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Navy Yard shooter's boss offers to help military improve security

WASHINGTON ? A little more than 24 hours after an IT contractor gunned down a dozen workers at the Washington Navy Yard, the CEO of the company he worked for sent an email to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus saying he has the experience to help the military improve its security.

The email from The Experts chief Thomas Hoshko, which included descriptions of his background and expertise, stunned some Navy leaders still reeling from the shooting rampage Monday that left 13 people dead, including the gunman, former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis.

And it fueled concern over what defense officials believe may have been failures by the company to alert the military about Alexis' apparent mental health problems.

In the email, which was obtained by The Associated Press, Hoshko said he was "dramatically" affected by the incident and "my heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of those innocent victims."

But the email quickly moves on, as Hoshko lays out his work experience and offers his services, saying he is "confident that I can provide valuable input and solutions to the process that will provide better security for the military, contractors and civilians."

Navy officials confirmed that email was sent to Mabus, but they declined to characterize its contents.

Florida-based The Experts declined to comment.

Revelation of the email comes as the Navy and the Defense Department launch a series of short- and long-term reviews into Alexis' Navy service history, the Pentagon's security clearance procedures, overall safety at defense installations around the world and the responsibilities that contractors have in reviewing their workers and notifying the military about potential problems.

One of the first reviews ordered by Mabus into the nearly four years of Alexis' troubled Navy career, is almost complete, according to the Navy. Mabus had asked for a review of Alexis' service record to determine if his behavioral problems while in the Navy should have affected his ability to keep his security clearance.

A secret security clearance is good for 10 years. It carries over, even if a worker leaves the military and joins a private company, as long as the gap between the two jobs is not more than two years. As a result, Alexis' clearance level was simply verified when he went to work for The Experts, but no additional research or checks were done.

Officials have acknowledged that a lot of red flags may have been missed in the months and years before Alexis brought a sawed-off shotgun into Building 197 at the Navy Yard and began shooting workers in a drawn-out assault that ended when he was killed in a gunbattle with police.

Alexis had maintained his secret level security clearance and passed at least two background checks despite a string of minor arrests, mental health issues and some recent bouts of suspicious conduct that raised worries even within the company.

Are the Texas Rangers out of the Wild Card?

What a dramatic shift in the season for the Texas Rangers. This is not good baseball. Texas dropped to second in the AL Wild Card standings after Wednesday?s loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. That gives the Rays sole possession of the first place Wild Card spot and leaves the Rangers only .5 games above the Indians and 1 game above Baltimore.

It is hard to point a finger at exactly what it is that has caused the Rangers to fall from one of the best teams in baseball to a club which can?t seem to win a game for the world. The team has lost 13 out of its last 16 games, losing series to the Twins, Angels, Pirates, and Athletics twice. There have really not been any season changing injuries, the team just hasn?t played well.

Obviously the number of runs scored has taken a huge hit in the last month. The Rangers have averaged just 3.44 runs scored a game during September. They have been able to get base runners but they frequently are stranded in scoring position as the team is unable to come up with the clutch hit to score runs.

At this point one of the only true hopes which the withering Rangers have is the return of their big slugger Nelson Cruz. However, even that spark of hope is shadowed with doubt. The Rangers organization has not yet stated whether or not Cruz will indeed be reinstated into the team?s lineup following his 50 game suspension, assuming the team is able to squeak its way into the postseason. Cruz has not played in a big league game since August 5th and will likely be rusty both up at the plate and in the field.

The addition of Alex Rios to the Rangers lineup has lost its hype but Rios continues to play at a noteworthy level hitting .322 so far in September with 3 home runs. The 32 year old Puerto Rican outfielder has yet to play in his first postseason game; Hopefully he will be able to lead the team and receive his first playoff birth.

What?s gone wrong with Ron?Ron Washington

In my opinion too much blame has been placed on manager Ron Washington for the Rangers steady decline in status. Ron is not the guy up at the plate who can?t hit a simple sac fly to score the runner from third. Nothing he says nor tactics he could use would be able to transform this Rangers team into better players. However, with that being said there have been many questionable decisions on Washington?s part. In Wednesday?s game for example he elected to leave left-hander Joseph Ortiz on the mound to face a string of right handed hitters with right-hander Neftali Feliz available in the bullpen. Washington commented that he ?felt Joe?s changeup would get the job done we needed to get done.? but it didn?t. In that situation maybe it would have been a better decision to play it by the books and bring in Feliz to face the right-handed batters regardless of what Washington thought about his changeup.

Changes need to be made and they need to be made literally overnight if the Rangers want to even have a chance at a Playoff position now. They have played the entire season looking like a World Series quality team and suddenly have lost their spunk. I still have faith that the Rangers will claim a Wild Card position but some insurance wins would greatly help their cause.

Google Wallet for iPhone Launches in the App Store

Google has just launched a free Google Wallet app in the App Store.

Though the app doesn?t support in-store payments (since Apple?s iPhone doesn?t feature an NFC chip), Google Wallet users can nevertheless perform a number of useful tasks using the application, which is optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Namely, it?s possible to send money to an email address using Google Wallet for iPhone, and you can also store credit and debit card details for easier online shopping.

Loyalty programs can be accessed from within the application, too, and offers can also be redeemed on-location.

Google explains in the app?s release notes:

Use the Google Wallet app to send money to any friend in the US with an email address. Plus, you can store your credit and debit cards, loyalty programs, offers, and more.

Send money from anywhere: Send money to any friend in the US with an email address. It?s easy, quick, and won?t cost them a dime. And once you start using the app, you?ll also get access to sending money in Gmail.

Carry less, save more: Store your loyalty programs in Google Wallet and leave the plastic cards behind. Redeem great offers with Google Wallet from your favorite businesses to save when you shop.

A safer wallet: Google Wallet comes with a PIN, 24/7 fraud monitoring, and Google Wallet Purchase Protection. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can easily disable the Google Wallet app at wallet.google.com/manage.

As mentioned, Google Wallet can be downloaded in the App Store free of charge, and is optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch only.

How To Spot a Manipulative Church Leader

I grew up in a small town in Texas and attended a small church. I loved my church. I loved the jovial pastor, all the men in suits who rubbed me on the head as I came in and out of the sanctuary, the kind ladies who always brought us muffins in Sunday School and especially the youth camps we?d go to over the summers. Church was my second home, and it almost feels like I spent more time there than in my own home.

One winter, though, our pastor decided to retire. We threw an enormous party in his honor. I?ll never forget person after person walking to the microphone to tell stories about the many years he?d shepherded our congregation. People cried, we sang, we brought gifts, we ate food, we laughed until late into the night. It took a full month for everybody to say their goodbyes.

I am eternally grateful the first minister I encountered was such a good man.

Because the second minister I encountered wasn?t.

A committee was put in place to replace our pastor and the committee decided to hire a dynamic young man from Louisiana. The man had been a traveling preacher, moving from church to church to perform revivals, to tell people about Jesus. He was a tall man and loud. He flailed his arms as he spoke. He talked about God?s power, about God?s wrath, about God?s love and to be honest he was quite moving. He was incredible at getting people to respond. He had a sharp sense of humor, would occasionally say shocking things to test our loyalty and see if we would turn on him or go with him, he knew the Bible inside and out and knew how to play human emotions like a fiddle. On any given Sunday we would experience a range of emotions from guilt and shame to fear and sometimes joy.

I even remember his first sermon. It was entitled ?Appoint those you trust and trust those you appoint.? That should have been an obvious sign to everybody. He was saying, without question, if you hire me to be your pastor, I am the boss. You must never question my authority.

Soon, the entire congregation fell under his spell. We loved it when he delighted in us but feared screwing up. One Sunday he snapped at the man working in the sound booth so sharply the man turned red from embarrassment. The pastor, realizing he?d gone too far, explained, ferociously, that God is a God of excellence and wouldn?t stand for mistakes, even from volunteer sound guys. He then quoted a passage about how we were supposed to be perfect even as Christ is perfect.

Looking back, this was all manipulation. People who care about the truth understand they are capable of self-deception and surround themselves with accountability. This pastor got rid of the accountability. He drove off any elder who wouldn?t submit, once again, quoting scripture and spinning the Bible so that those questioning his motives looked like infidels. He even said he felt justified using violence against them, simply because they refused to trust the leader God had appointed.

What made the situation so difficult is that the church in fact grew. His off-color sense of humor seemed relevant and even worldly while his knowledge of Scripture gave the congregation a sense of security. In fact, I?d say a sense of security is the main reason people were drawn to the church.

? ? ?

Don Riso and Don Hudson, perhaps the worlds leading experts on the enneagram, talk about controlling, bully-personalities as being secretly afraid. Many of them had been molested as children and subconsciously believe people are out to get them. Determined to never be molested again, they make themselves big, try to sound tough, try to intimidate people and will never allow themselves to be vulnerable. They insist that anybody close to them be submissive and will lie and cheat to protect themselves and their empire, all the while posing as a righteous hero. When extremely unhealthy, controlling personalities are stressed, they get great relief and a feeling of power by dominating others, even sexually. It is thought that many Priests who have molested young boys did not have a purely sexual motive, but took comfort in dominating young men to gain a sense of security and power, all the while acting as a shepherd in the church.

What happens under the spell of a master manipulator is people unknowingly submit their sense of security to somebody else. They relinquish the responsibility God has given them to govern their own lives to a powerful figure who says to them ?look, just do what I say and you?ll be fine.?

What they don?t realize is the extremely insecure manipulator is gaining security from controlling people, not from protecting them. Being wounded himself, he only wants to surround himself by those who are weak and who will not question him. He subconsciously considers this his layer of armor. The manipulated masses are his protection against outside intruders.

Many people to Christ under the manipulative pastors regime. And anytime he was questioned, he used his knowledge of Scripture statistics about church growth and Christian conversions (though they were greatly exaggerated) to bolster his case and run off accusers. Most people were afraid to contend with him because they knew he would attack them ferociously.

The church, then, became a revolving door. More than half the people who visited smelled him out and went away, and the pastor didn?t mind this at all. He only wanted the submissive, those who would allow him, using scripture, to guide and command every aspect of their lives. He even posted the names of tithing and non-tithing members in the lobby. Those who disagreed with him were written up as insubordinates to God in letters sent to the entire congregation, humiliating them and running them off for good. He even went as far as to threaten lawsuits.

And yet, as said previously, the church grew, filled with submissive people. The more intuitive walked away rolling their eyes.

The pastor, of course, grew more and more controlling. He told the congregation what they could and couldn?t read, what they could and couldn?t watch on television, what they could and couldn?t see at the movies and even who they could and couldn?t vote for.

? ? ?

Things grew very dark, however, one evening when the pastor found out one of the elders he wanted to get rid of had visited a bar on the edge of town. The man and his wife had gone on a double date with some friends and went out to the bar to hear a band. Somebody informed the pastor and he had the elder paged and told him to meet him at his office. What unfolded was nothing short of a scolding and a witch hunt. The pastor embarrassed the elder and belittled him and informed the church he?d asked for his resignation from the elder board. The elder hadn?t so much as sipped a beer, but the pastor wanted to get rid of him anyway.

Within a few weeks, the elder took a gun from his gun cabinet, and took his life.

The pastor, of course, felt no remorse, blaming the event on the elders secret life in which he visited bars.

Ultimately, the power-mongering was too much and too many people began to leave. Manipulators, however, do not care to restore anything and will gladly take the ship down with them. They need to feel their power, whether that is to raise somebody up or tear them down. This pastor needed to destroy the church before he left. He slowly fired every member of the staff, then resigned to start a non?profit that mobilized Christians to take up conservative political causes and fight the democrats.

Shortly after he left the church, the pastors own daughter committed suicide in the bathroom their family home. He had one other child, a college-bound freshman. To this day, his son will not speak to him, and the pastor does not speak of his children. His wife is thought of as a kept woman.

The church, some twenty years later, has not recovered from the destruction. There will never be restoration or reconciliation because the manipulator will never repent.

Repentance, is, after all, an act of vulnerability. Manipulators will not put themselves in a place of vulnerability for fear they will once again be abused. They do not trust anybody. Instead, they demand trust from everybody around them. Those who do not submit are considered enemies.

The devastation from a manipulator goes beyond the loss of life. Too many to count walked away from their faiths because of his tactics. Manipulators are skillful movers of people, so we often see their many accomplishments, but they are even more skilled at hiding the devastation caused behind the scenes. Christian leaders who are manipulators bring people to Christ at the expense of pushing many, many more people away.

Here?s how to smell out a manipulator in a religious setting:

A Christian leader who is manipulative will:

? Never be truly vulnerable. They will never tell stories about their weaknesses. If they do, those stories will be about how they are too strong, too devout and too many other things that are more or less humble brags.

? Always have the true answer, and truth is truth because they said it. The truth is the Bible is complex, but a manipulator knows they can?t get you to submit if they don?t have ALL the answers. Certainly trained pastors have answers, but nobody has all the answers. Manipulators do. They want to tell you how to live.

? They make you jump through hoops. If you want to get married, you must go through hours of classes so they can approve. If you want to be a member, you must sign a contract or a statement of theological belief. Now many wonderful churches do this sort of thing, but when there is a manipulative leader, you?ll normally find an endless number of hurdles to jump over. They want to test you, over and over, to make sure you?re being submissive.

? They will never let you off the hook. A manipulative leader can never, ever let you be fully free in Christ. There must always be something wrong with you or else you will no longer need them and will no longer have to submit.

If you?re in a church with a manipulative leader creating the culture, I believe you should leave. The only way a manipulator stops manipulating is when the manipulation stops working, and by staying, you?re saying to the manipulator that it?s working. If you fight them, you?ll lose.

For more about dealing with manipulative people, I recommend Harriet Braiker?s book Who?s Pulling Your Strings.

Don?s new book (still untitled, October 2014) will talk about this phenomenon a bit more. If you?d like to know when the book comes out, sign up on our mailing list. You?ll also get a free copy of Don?s audio book, Through Painted Deserts.

The Impact of War: Mental Health of Veterans and Their Families

PTSD, The Impact of WarAn article on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) website details research on some of the ways deployment can distress service members, their spouses and their children. The VAreports that, by the end of 2008, 1.7 million Americans had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 43 percent of active-duty service members have children. After returning home, these veterans may cope with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, traumatic brain injury and other conditions as a result of their service, and these issues affect not only the service member, but also their spouses, children, extended families and friends.

Treatment is key for veterans and their families to recover from trauma and mental health issues. In a survey of veterans suffering from PTSD, almost 80 percent wanted their families to be more involved in their recovery process, highlighting the need for spouses, children and other family members to stand with their service members. During their deployment, service members may feel alone and isolated from their families; sometimes, it may take the efforts of the entire family to ensure this feeling doesn?t persist even after our veterans have come home.

Beyond mental health issues, veterans and their families must also face a number of other challenges related to war. The parent who is not deployed often has to take on complete responsibility for the care of the home, children and finances. This can leave spouses feeling anxious, lonely, sad and overwhelmed. Studies also indicate that post-deployment families often face marital problems, domestic violence, sexual issues, depression and sleep disturbances.

In addition, the veteran?s spouse must deal with possible behavioral issues in their children, which can be related to the deployed parents? absence. Depending on the age and developmental stage of the child, this can manifest in temper tantrums, separation anxiety, changes in eating habits, a decline in academic performance, mood changes, physical complaints, anger, acting out or apathy.

In an attempt to address some of the issues mentioned above, the VA offers services and information for returning veterans, their family and friends, and even services specifically for children. For service members, the VA website has an entire section dedicated to mental health, which includes information on issues commonly faced by returning veterans, such as PTSD and substance abuse, and even the number of a crisis hotline and a confidential text-based web chat. The VA website also has a section for families, which includes information on PTSD, depression and even parenting.

The USC School of Social Work is committed to helping veterans and their families successfully transition back into civilian life. Our military social work curriculum focuses on evidence-based clinical practices and military culture, which has expanded to innovative online education and training using advanced virtual reality technology, along with promising research-based mental health interventions. Additionally, the school established the Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families, which utilizes research, education and community outreach to inform decision-makers on policy issues affecting veterans and their families. Among those issues is a focus on rapidly increasing the number of clinical social workers and behavioral health providers trained to treat the challenges troops, veterans and their families face, as well as mental health research that can be directly translated into clinical practice.

Former Navy chaplain: Obamacare 'killed this poor lady' because it ...

By David Edwards

?

A disgraced former Navy chaplain said on Wednesday that he opposed President Barack Obama?s health care reform law because it actually ?causes cancer.?

?Here?s my thesis: Obamacare causes cancer,? Chaplain Gordon James ?Chaps? Klingenschmitt told the viewers of his Pray in Jesus Name Internet show. ?Whenever you remove Obamacare and health insurance from 4.9 million Americans, it causes cancer because those people, since they can?t afford their premiums, they drop their insurance, they can no longer get cancer treatments!?

Klingenschmitt said that he had gotten a letter from a woman who asked him to visit her friend, who was dying in the hospital of cancer. The friend had waited too long to get treatment because she had dropped her insurance and now could not get insured.

?She makes the illogical leap, that?s why we need more Obamacare,? the TV chaplain opined. ?No, Obamacare is actually the one that killed this poor lady with cancer.?

1 of the common side effects of HIV and AIDS is neurocognitive impairments

TORONTO, Sept. 18, 2013One of the common side effects of HIV and AIDS is neurocognitive impairments changes in how fast a person can process information, pay attention, multi-task and remember things yet there are no adequate tests to screen patients for these problems, according to a new study out of St. Michael's Hospital.

The incidence of severe forms of HIV-associated neuorcognitive disorders, or HAND, has declined significantly with the availability of combination antiretroviral drug therapy over the last 20 years.

But the prevalence of the milder form has remained stable and even slightly increased, affecting 50 to 60 per cent of people living with HIV and AIDS.

"Screening tools have not been updated to reflect this change," said Dr. Sean B. Rourke, a neuropsychologist who heads the Neurobehavioural Research Unit at St. Michael's. "We are still trying to use or adapt the older dementia screening tools to catch the milder form of HAND."

Dr. Rourke said that having effective screening tests to identify and differentiate the two different forms of HAND is important for treatment decision-making. The current standards of practice requires a detailed neuropsychological examination, which is time-consuming and not readily accessible.

"Identifying that patients have a mild form of this condition is critical," said Dr. Rourke. "Even mild neurocognitive problems can have a significant impact on a person's everyday functioning, affecting his or her ability to take medications or ability to perform at work, and may also lead to more social isolation and withdrawal."

In a review of literature published today in the journal AIDS, Dr. Rourke and colleagues looked at 31 previously published studies to see the rate at which commonly used tools in practice were detecting milder forms of HAND.

They found that the two most frequently used tests the HIV Dementia Scale and the International HIV Dementia Scale were effective in identifying severe forms of neurocognitive impairment such as dementia, but ineffective for more mild form of HAND. None of the tools studied identified mild HAND conditions well enough to be recommended for broader use.

"With the prevalence of milder forms of HAND increasing, and limited resources available for formal neuropsychological examinations, there is a critical need to be able to screen and identify people with HAND," Dr. Rourke said. "Improved screening tools could go a long way in improving the care, quality of life, and study of treatment interventions of individuals living with HIV and AIDS."

Dr. Rourke said tools should be brief enough to be used in a clinic or health centre setting, and able to be administered by a trained individual with minimal equipment.

Dr. Rourke has received funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research to conduct the largest and methodologically rigorous study to date that will further examine existing screening tools for HAND to see if there are any modifications that can be made to make them more effective. He will also be testing new tools being developed by his colleagues in the United States, which show promise for being more effective with the milder forms of HAND. Final results from this study should be available in 2014.

Is Tor's Anonymous Internet Still Secure?

Browsing the Web with The Onion Router, or Tor, is supposed to make you anonymous. Many of the encryption algorithms used by this popular Internet anonymizing protocol have likely been cracked by the NSA, says one security expert ? and upgrading to the newest versions of Tor software won?t be enough to protect your privacy.

There's still much we don't know about the NSA's reported ability to circumvent online encryption. The Sept. 5 articles by The New York Times and The Guardian are light on details, but they suggest that the NSA has cracked a significant portion of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), the encrypted protocol that oversees the connection between your browser and the websites it displays.

That means 76 percent of Tor's supposedly anonymous network traffic might be crackable by the NSA, according to the findings of security expert Robert Graham, the CEO of Errata Security.

MORE: 13 Security and Privacy Tips for the Truly Paranoid

However, Roger Dingledine of the Tor Project told Tom's Guide that Graham's findings may be due to the sudden spread of a Tor-based botnet, or hidden network of malware-infected computers.

Tor is a networking protocol originally sponsored by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Now an open-source project, the protocol is used in various pieces of software, including the Tor Project's free-to-download browser bundle, which anonymizes your data by sending it through a random selection of more than 3,000 servers, called relays.

These relays are run by volunteers around the globe. ?Each relay decrypts only enough of the data to send it on to the next server, a process comparable to peeling back the layers of an onion (hence the name).

This process masks the origin of Web traffic, forum posts and other data sent over the Internet. It also makes it difficult to read the data while it's in transit.

Many people depend on Tor to provide an extra layer of security and privacy to their online activities. But online security expert Robert Graham suspects ? and the recent NSA revelations seem to confirm ? that the NSA is capable of cracking Tor wide open.

If the NSA is devoting significant resources to cracking SSL, it's probably already cracked a type of SSL that encrypts connections using what are called 1024-bit RSA or DH keys.? These are randomized strings of 1,024 ones and zeroes that unlock the encryption of the RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) and DH (Diffie-Hellman) algorithms.

Security experts have long known that 1024-bit keys were becoming out of date. However, many websites still haven't upgraded to 2048-bit RSA keys, which are longer and therefore more secure.

Until recently, Tor used 1024-bit DH keys.? The newest update, version 2.4, incorporates a different kind of DH encryption that uses a powerful next-generation encryption technique called elliptical curve cryptography.

However, according to Graham's research, only 24 percent of Tor traffic uses the elliptic-curve cryptography in version 2.4. That means more than three-quarters of Tor traffic uses some form of 1024-bit DH key, which is likely crackable by the NSA, ?Graham said.

More significant, Graham's findings show that only 10 percent of Tor relays have upgraded to 2.4. So even if you upgraded to 2.4, your Tor traffic might still get bounced through one or more relays running 2.3, meaning your upgrade isn't really doing you any good.

Dingledine said, however, that by his count the number of relays running 2.4 is closer to 50 percent.

Dingledine pointed out that Tor traffic has spiked considerably since Aug. 20, apparently because a rogue bot has been installing Tor version 2.3 on millions of computers. The flood of new Tor clients running 2.3 probably accounts for the low percentage of elliptic-curve encrypted traffic.

In his analysis, Graham also said that elliptical curve cryptography might not be as secure as thought.

"We think the NSA has made a breakthrough in mathematics," Graham told Tom's Guide.? "That breakthrough may be in the 1024 bit keys I refer. Conversely, it may be in the newer elliptical curves. We just don't know where."

Don't panic yet, though. ?Just because the NSA has (probably) cracked 1024-bit keys or even (conceivably) elliptic curve cryptography, doesn't mean that everyone has. ?

All we know for sure is what was reported in The New York Times and The Guardian on Sept. 5: that the NSA can "undermine the major tools protecting the privacy of everyday communications in the Internet age." The articles did not provide specifics about which tools were undermined and what methods were used.

"It's not at all clear that NSA can break 1024-bit keys easily, or even at all currently," Dingledine said. "The main risk is that there will come a time in the future when it is easy ? and we don't know when that time will arrive ? and if they've logged Tor traffic flows from today, they'll be able to break those flows at that future point."

Officials Halt Drone Operator Trying to Aid Colorado Responders

Last Friday afternoon, in the midst of the Colorado flooding disaster, Chris Miser was at the Boulder Emergency Operations Center. Miser, the owner of Falcon UAV, was showing disaster-response officials the imagery his drone had taken during a damage-assessment flight over the flooded town of Longmont. "The GIS people who do the mapping for the area were there," Miser says. "The transportation people were there because they wanted to know which roads were washed out. The emergency-response people were there because they wanted to know which roads needed to be closed and which houses were flooded."

The meeting was a perfect example of how small UAVs can be used in disaster response. Nevertheless, Miser, whose company sells drones for $15,000 to $55,000 to local and state agencies, as well as to the agriculture and oil and gas industries, soon found himself in hot water. As he headed to Lyons, another hard-hit town 50 miles north of Denver, he got a call from one of his contacts at the Boulder operations center. The caller told him that FEMA was in control of the airspace and that if his drone took flight he'd be arrested. That's when his volunteering effort came to an abrupt end.

It's common for air traffic to be closed around over a disaster area, but that job belongs to the Federal Aviation Administration?not by FEMA. Typically, emergency managers on the ground work with the FAA to sort out exemptions for disaster-response aircraft.

However, it can be a controversial practice. Many complained that the FAA was trying to protect ExxonMobil when it shut down the airspace over Mayflower, Ark., in April after an oil-pipeline rupture caused the evacuation of 20 homes and extensive environmental damage. Most post-disaster closures are decidedly more mundane. In addition to the airspace closure over parts of Colorado this week, the FAA also closed the airspace over Plush, Ore., "to provide a safe environment for firefighting aircraft operations" as efforts to contain wildland fires there continue.

"It makes sense to shut down the airspace during a disaster," concedes Miser. "What was irritating was how they did it. All the helicopters were up in the mountains and canyons doing search and rescue. I was in the flatlands, where there was nobody else up in the air. They didn't ask if I was a hobbyist or professional. They didn't ask about my capabilities. They didn't ask if I was taking live video or still shots. They just said no drone flights, or I'd be arrested."

For its part, FEMA (which is not a law enforcement agency) referred questions to local emergency management officials in Boulder. "I heard from one guy at FEMA who said it wasn't them that issued this order," says Miser. "Then I heard from another FEMA guy who said that if they had a disaster in their area, they'd be happy for the help."

The confusion in Colorado is an unavoidable outgrowth of the rise of civilian UAVs in American airspace, which PopMech covered in our September cover story. The FAA is under a Congressional mandate to formulate rules and regulation that will integrate drones into the way it polices our skies. But the going is slow. And until those rules are in place, there are bound to be more examples of drone operators clashing with authorities?whether those drone operators are flying mischievous dive-bombs around national landmarks, or trying to aid rescue workers in the midst of a crisis.

"We were up in the air when the National Guard helicopters were grounded because of bad weather," Miser says. His Falcon UAVs record survey-grade imagery that can be particularly helpful in the aftermath of a disaster. "If there's a need to rebuild a road quickly," says Miser, "we can tell them how much volume was lost during the flood and how much needs to go back."

Emotional Freedom Techniques ? Top 7 Easy Ways to Increase ...

A lot of personal trainers want to build a successful fitness business that will bring them financial freedom, but most personal trainers starting out do not focus enough time and energy on what it takes to increase personal training profits so they end up struggling to make ends meet. Thats why Bedros Keuilian, the countrys top fitness marketing expert, has revealed seven ways to help fitness business owners increase their personal training profits.

He explains, When I started my personal training business back in the day I was the king of linear income. Id drive to a clients house, trade money for time, and then drive to another clients house and repeat. Then when I opened my first training studio, I realized that income does not have to be linear at all. The best way I know how to increase personal training profits is to open up the gap between income and expense thats where your profits are hiding.

Here are the top 7 ways to increase personal training profits:

1. Raise your rates. You might think that low rates keep you competitive, but the truth is you shouldnt be competing with the gyms and diet centers in the first place. Instead, find your niche market and over deliver on results and service.

2. Start group training programs. Phase out one-on-one training or increase the rates for one-on-one so that it makes the group training program more enticing and if someone really wants to train one-on-one theyll find the means to pay the premium for it.

3. Start using E.F.T. (auto debit) in your business and youre going to see two things happen. Youre going to automatically start retaining clients for a longer period of time and youll have more time to train clients, market, and kick back. Plus, your income becomes very predictable.

4.Sell other services and products to your clients. People workout with you because they see you as a credible source of information. This puts you in a position to help them with other needs they may have about health, fitness, and fat loss.

5. Create joint ventures with other businesses who can add value to your business and become an affiliate where you make money for every clients you refer to them.

6. Manage your time more efficiently. Focus and work only on the things that will take your business forward.

7. Sell and market better. Get better at both otherwise you are just wasting money. If you cant sell or are only selling small packages, learn to close more deals and sell bigger packages.
